Chapter 42: Chapter 39: Culture!
"But," Emick continued, "since you haven't been showing up to class, some of your courses have a zero for participation grades. At this rate, you won't be able to graduate."
He paused, giving Lemu a pointed look.
"And many of your exam schedules overlap—what's your plan? Split yourself in two to take them all?"
Lemu opened his mouth but had no comeback.
"So," Emick pressed on, "you'd better publish some papers or win some awards to make up for it. I can try to help you waive some courses if you give me substantial material to work with."
"In principle, an outstanding research paper can be used to exempt a related course. But at this point, you're probably out of time. I'll see if I can pull some strings for you."
"Just hand in something heavy-hitting—enough to make others willingly bend the rules for you. That's the leverage I need to get this sorted."
"Got it, got it, got it."
Lemu nodded repeatedly—obedient mode activated.
Emick wasn't finished.
"One more thing—get out of the lab once in a while."
"You said you wanted to come to school and experience campus life—don't think I've forgotten that promise."
"But you've barely set foot on campus after orientation."
"Look, I know academics and research are important, but so is your physical and mental health."
His voice softened slightly, carrying the weight of experience.
"Take it from someone who's had health problems in the past—don't brush this off. A young person's health doesn't just affect you personally—it affects the future of humanity as well."
Emick let out a heavy sigh before adding,
"Also, there's an international astrophysics conference coming up—top-tier stuff. I've got one slot left. If you're interested, I'll save it for you."
Despite his nagging tone, it was clear Emick's life mission revolved around ensuring both academia and humanity had a bright future.
Professor Emick was getting old. More often than not, he felt his mental sharpness wasn't what it used to be, and his memory had started to fade.
Years of overworking himself during his youth had left him with chronic health issues. Just last year, he'd been hospitalized—and nearly didn't make it. That scare had left him reflective.
The future, after all, would ultimately rest in the hands of the next generation.
That was one of the reasons why Emick had always favored Lemu—not just because he recognized genius when he saw it, but because he'd pinned his hopes on him as well.
Lemu could feel the sincerity in Emick's words.
But with Stark's Mark II just completed and Iron Man's debut looming on the horizon, this was hardly the right time for him to step away.
As for the technologies he was currently developing—whether it was the Iron Man armor, the gravity-field kinetic stabilizer, or even the palladium reactor—none of them could be published.
In fact, they had to be kept strictly confidential.
Marvel's world was crawling with villains, and if any of these inventions fell into the wrong hands, both he and Stark could be in serious danger.
The more people understood him, the easier it would be to exploit his weaknesses—no different from how nations kept their military strategies under wraps before a war.
Still, if it came down to ordinary academic papers, Lemu wasn't worried. He could churn out 240 papers a day without breaking a sweat.
If experiments were required, it might slow him down—slightly—but meeting the school's requirements would be trivial.
Lemu let out a subtle sigh of relief, though a tinge of guilt lingered in his chest.
He met Emick's gaze, carefully choosing his words as he nodded.
"I understand, Professor. I won't let this affect my graduation, and I'll be sure to take care of my health too."
He hesitated for a moment before adding with genuine concern,
"You should also take care of yourself—and aim to stick around for many more years."
Lemu continued, his tone measured and deliberate.
"I'll put together several projects over the next few days and submit as many papers as needed to match my course load before the end of the semester."
"It won't be difficult for me—so I'll leave the exemption process in your capable hands. As for attending classes and the conference, I'm really sorry, but I can't step away right now."
"But once things settle down, I'll make sure to visit you in person at the university."
After chatting with Emick a little longer, Lemu finally ended the call and let out a deep breath.
No matter how he looked at it, he still wasn't used to people being so good to him. It left him feeling uneasy, as though he might fail to repay them properly.
For all his calculating tendencies, his shameless opportunism, and his twisted logic, there was one thing Lemu valued deeply—relationships.
If someone offered him genuine kindness, he'd instinctively want to return it in equal measure.
Lemu had always believed in repaying kindness with kindness—and resentment with vengeance.
And then, Pepper Potts showed up.
Hands on her hips and wearing a strict expression, she launched into a lecture without preamble.
"Lemu, I just got off the phone with Professor Emick. He thinks you need to get out more, and honestly? I agree with him."
"You've been buried in work for way too long. That's not healthy—for either your mind or your body."
Pepper wasn't done.
"You're still in your teens! You should be out at an amusement park, catching a movie, or just hanging out somewhere."
"You don't have a single friend outside this house, and that's just not okay."
She leaned closer, her tone softening with genuine concern.
"And at your age, you should at least be curious about girls, but instead, you're obsessed with blueprints and machines. Honestly, I'm worried about you."
American culture, huh?
They even cared about stuff like this?
Also—teens? Dating? Isn't that too early?!
The slime was shocked.
The slime fell silent.
Pepper's goal was clear—she wanted to drag Lemu out of his lab, force him to socialize, and maybe even help him meet a few girls.
But Lemu wasn't about to let her steer the conversation.
He leaned back with a grin and fired back, smoothly flipping the topic.
"Let's not talk about me," he said, his eyes gleaming mischievously. "I saw the gift you gave Tony."
