Chapter 8: AT THE GATE
Waking up from a strange dream to the beautiful sound of nature. Just a normal morning for Carly. She did the dishes, cooked the meals, cleaned the house and got set for school before anyone was up. Fortunately, she had managed to avoid seeing her mother or maybe she avoided her mother seeing her.
The thoughts of her predicament roamed on in her mind as she prepared for her day.
'Why am I so different? Is something wrong with me? Is she even my mother? What is the dream? Who is that guy? Why do I have an infirmity? Why are all these happening to me?'
These thoughts roamed in her head as she worked in silence. She got ready and headed out of the house to her school.
"Good morning, Carly" Mrs. Scottsdale, Carly's neighbor for the past 5 years greeted her with a charming smile.
"Good morning ma'am" Carly answered. "I see you're up early today, let me guess, to water your plants right?"
" As always! You know, these flowers are rare and beautiful and they need to be showered with love and attention"
" But you know Mrs Scott, there are some people who don't get as much love and attention as that of your beautiful flowers there. They are just there in the crowd yet alone." Carly said with a soft smile.
" Carly! There you go again with your soft, wise words. Yes, there are people who lack love. So unfortunate if you ask me. I'm glad you're not one of them though."
'if only you know' Carly thought in her mind.
"I have to be on my way to school now ma'am. See you later. My regards to Josh and Kay" Carly said waving at her plant loving neighbor and continuing on her way.
Once again she was reminded of her horrible state. Even outside the walls of her home, she was still taunted by her experience.
"How unfortunate you are Carly!" She said to herself.
Carly had a long walk to school. Her 1 hour walk to school was nothing new to her. Her parents aren't buoyant enough to afford the transport option given by our school. So she had always had to walk an hour to school every morning. She kept thinking and drowning in her own thoughts. She kept a smile on the surface but she was always hurting deep inside. Such was the life of this beautiful and intelligent girl. Smiling on the surface, keeping an happy atmosphere but crying deep inside, hurting in the core of her heart.
'I wish I could end it all. I wish all these could just blow away with the wind. I wish I was never born. I wish I died so all these pains could stop.' Carly thought to herself. 'If the price of living is pain and hardship and hurt, then I'm not willing to pay this price, not anymore.'
Invisible tears rolling down her cheeks. And crying so loud it can't be heard. Her thoughts suddenly interrupted by a familiar voice. It was Mr Park, Carly's friend. Though he was old enough to be her grand father, he had related with Carly as a friend. He was one of the few people who genuinely loved Carly. He'd always give sage advices to her and she could tell him things she told no one. Not everything though.
"My ever pretty friend, Good morning. How are you doing" Mr Park said with so much grace
" I'm fine my young old friend." Carly said smiling and this time it was sincere. It felt nice seeing a little light in this pitch dark state she was in.
" I see you're preparing for your morning jogs, just don't stress yourself too much " Carly added.
Of course not dearie, Mr Park gave a smirk after giving her a genuine smile and added, "make sure you don't worry tour pretty head too much when you get to school cause i know you do a lot of thinking "
" Of course not, Mr Park" Carly gave a not so sincere answer with a sad smile and quickened her steps towards school. She was getting too late and Mr Sebastian, the principal was going to be crossed with her. Eventually, she got to the school gate and met and unpalatable sight...
Come right here, The principal of Mattson high School, Mr Sebastian thundered and Carly moved towards him with shaken steps.
"You've been owing the school for a while year now, you think this is charity???
I came to the gate purposely because of you. You're the only one owing in the whole school.
" I'm sorry Mr Seb, my parents are working on it, and we'd get it cleared soon" Carly said with her head lowered , fingers crossed, and tears in her eyes.
This isn't... "Good morning, Mr Seb" a deep familiar voice came from the back.
