Chapter 33: Upgrade

"No, brother!"

Senjuro's voice trembled as he spoke, unable to contain his emotions.

"Absolutely not! Father said this is our family's breathing method—it cannot be passed on to others."

Despite his young age, Senjuro understood why his older brother always spoke so highly of Ren.

It was because Ren was terrifying.

After just one fight with Kyojuro, Ren had managed to secretly grasp parts of their family's sacred techniques!

And now, if Kyojuro demonstrated the final form of Flame Breathing, wouldn't Ren effectively master all the Rengoku family's greatest secrets?

Even worse, as Kyojuro's biological brother, Senjuro himself hadn't fully learned the technique yet. How could Ren possibly learn it first? Wouldn't that make him, Senjuro, look like a complete fool?

"No way!" Senjuro exclaimed, clutching at Kyojuro's clothing, his voice almost pleading.

But Kyojuro remained silent, deep in thought as he weighed the pros and cons of the situation.

Senjuro's concerns were valid. Flame Breathing was an exclusive technique passed down through the Rengoku family. Sharing it with an outsider was no small matter—it could tarnish the family's honor.

Yet, Ren wasn't asking to become his student.

This was giving Kyojuro a headache.

Ultimately, as the current Flame Hashira, the decision lay with him.

Suddenly, an idea struck him like lightning.

Ren had already admitted to learning parts of Flame Breathing. He could have kept quiet, secretly observing and practicing until he perfected it on his own. Yet, he had chosen to be upfront about it.

This gesture showed respect—respect for Kyojuro's authority and the Rengoku family's legacy.

Kyojuro's resolve solidified. He reached for the hilt of his Nichirin Sword.

Senjuro's eyes widened in alarm. He knew what this action meant.

"Brother! Are you really going to—?"

Kyojuro gently placed a hand on Senjuro's head, his expression firm and solemn.

"Senjuro," he began, his voice calm but resolute, "Flame Breathing was created to slay demons. Its purpose is to protect humanity, not to be hoarded as a family heirloom.

"If someone we trust can wield it to fight demons, then teaching them is the right thing to do."

He paused, his tone unwavering. "I am the Flame Hashira, and I recognize Ren as someone worthy of learning our breathing technique.

"If, one day, he betrays the Demon Slayer Corps or succumbs to darkness, I, Kyojuro Rengoku, will take full responsibility by committing seppuku."

His words echoed like thunder through the clearing, reverberating with the weight of his conviction.

Ren stood frozen, stunned by the gravity of Kyojuro's declaration.

This wasn't just an agreement. It was a declaration of trust and responsibility, binding Kyojuro's honor as a Hashira.

Even Senjuro, who had been adamantly opposed moments ago, fell silent. Slowly, he released his grip on Kyojuro's sleeve, realizing that his brother's decision was not made lightly.

"Brother…" Senjuro murmured, his resistance fading into reluctant acceptance.

As for Ren, he silently vowed to honor this trust.

Kyojuro stepped forward, drawing his Nichirin Sword. Its blade glinted as he drove it into the ground, the air around him shimmering with intensity.

A suffocating pressure filled the clearing.

Ren's eyes widened in awe.

From Kyojuro's body, a colorless gas began to seep, surrounding him in an almost tangible aura. It was as if his very presence had become flame itself.

"So this is fighting spirit," Ren muttered under his breath.

The pressure intensified, and then—boom!

A wave of heat erupted, distorting the air around them. Kyojuro stood at the center, an inferno incarnate, embodying the very essence of the Flame Hashira.

"Flame Breathing…"

"Ninth Form: Rengoku!"

With a roar, Kyojuro unleashed a fiery dragon that blazed across the clearing, splitting the dusk in an infernal blaze.

Ren's pupils trembled as he watched the incredible display of power.

In that moment, something stirred deep within him.

[You have observed Flame Breathing: Ninth Form - Rengoku!]

[You are shocked! You instantly comprehend the forms and principles of Flame Breathing!]

[You begin to ponder...]

[You identify weaknesses in Flame Breathing!]

[You begin deducing solutions and improvements in your mind...]

Ren's thoughts came to a halt.

"No, this isn't just for myself," he thought, his determination solidifying.

Suddenly, a click echoed in his mind.

[You have achieved an epiphany!]

['Bullet Time' has upgraded to 'Bullet Domain'!]

[In Bullet Domain, mental consumption is doubled, but your observation, learning, and reaction speeds are tripled!]

[You activate Bullet Domain, enhancing your analysis abilities!]

In mere moments, Ren achieved what should have taken years.

[You have deduced the flaws in Flame Breathing!]

[You have identified ways to increase its temperature and efficiency!]

[You have designed an improved Nichirin Sword optimized for Flame Breathing!]

[You combined all your insights and created an upgraded version: Fire breathing!]

When Ren finally opened his eyes, his mind buzzed with the strain, but he had succeeded.

The clearing was silent, save for the crackling of dying flames. Kyojuro stood proudly amidst the scorched earth, his demonstration complete.

As Ren gazed at the scene, a single realization dawned on him.

The true responsibility of wielding power wasn't just to protect—it was to preserve and innovate.

And today, Ren had taken his first step toward mastery.
