Chapter 40: Chapter 40
She looked at me questioningly, but after a moment's hesitation, she obeyed.
"Okay, don't do anything weird."
'Really...what if I kiss you?' The thought crossed my mind as I watched her lips curve into a nervous little smile.
I pushed aside the desire to have her all to myself and slowly took out the gift I had bought from the shop, taking the silver necklace with a crimson stone between my fingers. It was elegant and simple, and I had liked it because it resembled Rose's hair.
I wrapped it around her back and placed it delicately around her neck. Her white skin was silky smooth, and she flinched slightly when my hands brushed the back of her neck.
"Hey, what are you doing?" her voice trembled slightly, and I could see a slight blush spreading across her cheeks.
"Let me finish. I almost did."
The magic lanterns were now fully lit, creating a circle of light around us.
I finally managed to attach it and took a few steps away to appreciate her. The stone in the center emitted glitter against her skin like a crimson star. "Wow, it looks good on you, what do you think?"
She opened her eyes and lifted the necklace in awe, caressing the silver pieces between her fingers. "What, where did you get this? It's beautiful, but..."
"I found it this morning in a small stall near the adventurer's area. It's nothing."
"You're lying," she said without thinking, then her eyes went wide. "Huh? How did I know?"
I pointed to the necklace. "As far as I know, it's a Magic Item that gives its wearer a special feeling. I think it worked."
I explained it in a term Rose should be familiar with.
[Pendant of Truth]
I had read the passive ability of this item earlier, and I thought it would suit Rose.
She blinked several times before expressing her bewilderment. "You... How did you...? This must cost a lot, right? I mean... If I'm not mistaken, I can do what the gods do now."
The thing that only cost 5000 soul essence granted a trait that the gods of this world possessed. In this case, Rose had the ability to sense whether someone was telling her lies or the truth.
This item would be worth at least 50000 Soul Essence if the description didn't mention that it was broken.
"It's a nice ability, don't you think? Like a sixth sense or something."
"But a magic item... This necklace is too expensive and especially rare, even for me. You should have kept it. It would help you a lot."
It might be a super rare item for the inhabitants of this world, and I doubted that anyone other than the gods could possess such an ability. As for me, as long as I had the necessary soul essence, I could buy as many as I wanted.
I patted the wolf woman on the shoulder. "Rose, it's your gift. It's a gift. Besides, you've helped me a lot and you deserve it. Now you'll always know when someone is lying to you, won't you?"
Huh? Wait a minute... Now that I put it that way, didn't I just dig my own grave?
After noticing that she at least looked pleased, I shrugged.
This item could be very useful for her work in the guild, where she needs to ask questions and record information. It could also protect her from the misleading words of others.
She looked at me intently, and I scratched my cheeks. "So, do you like it?"
After a moment she shook her head, but not for no.
"Yes, I like it a lot. Very much. Thank you, Eithan."
I wondered if she could discern if I wasn't lying when I told her I loved her. I decided not to risk it, because it was freaking me out.
"You're welcome. Thanks for today, by the way. I hope to see you again soon."
"Of course. Keep in touch. And let me know if you need any help with anything."
We shook hands and I watched her walk home as I looked down to stare at her ass. I couldn't help it. Since she was wearing tight pants, I noticed her round butt and my heart pounded in wonder.
'What a nice person.'
Leaning against the sunset, I looked up at the sky and smiled.
"Today was a beautiful day, don't you think so, Sys?"
[...]
Of course, the system had no conscience.
Some people could be like Rose, rough but soft-hearted, but they were rare in this city of adventurers and gods. For the first time in a long time, I was happy to have met someone.
"Well, I have to go home."
I looked at the Babel Tower in the center of the city and remembered that I would soon begin my journey to the Middle Floors.
I thought of her and how she had told me I was a fool for trying. It was true, maybe I wouldn't be such a fool if I prepared a little more.
Huh? Why do I keep thinking about her? I need to focus.
I forced myself to think about my goals and made my way to the abandoned church.
