Chapter 5: Chapter 5: Into the Ruins
The forest thinned as Lei Chen and Mao emerged into a clearing, revealing the ruins Mao had mentioned. The once-grand structure lay in decay, vines crawling up the cracked stone walls and broken pillars. A sense of foreboding hung in the air, the faint hum of dormant energy making Lei's skin crawl.
"This place gives me the creeps," Lei said, taking a cautious step forward.
"It should," Mao replied, hopping gracefully off his shoulder. "Ruined sects like this are often littered with traps, curses, and the lingering resentment of those who died here. Very entertaining."
"Comforting," Lei muttered, gripping the hilt of his energy blade tightly.
As they approached the entrance, the air grew colder. The carved archway was covered in strange symbols Lei didn't recognize, though they pulsed faintly with light, as if still active.
"What are these markings?" Lei asked.
Mao's golden eyes gleamed. "Formation runes. They're designed to ward off intruders. Step in the wrong place, and you might find yourself impaled, burned, or worse."
Lei froze mid-step. "And you couldn't have mentioned that sooner?"
"I thought it was obvious," Mao said, its tail flicking lazily. "Fortunately for you, I'm well-versed in formations. Stick close, and you might survive."
Lei sighed. "Why do I feel like you enjoy this way too much?"
Mao smirked—or at least Lei imagined it did. "Because I do."
The cat padded forward, its movements deliberate as it weaved through the rubble. Lei followed, careful to place his feet exactly where Mao stepped. Each step felt like walking on a razor's edge, the tension mounting with every faint glow of the runes around them.
"Nanospirit," Lei whispered, "can you analyze these formations?"
Analysis in progress... Runes indicate defensive measures. Probability of activation: 42%. Recommending minimal disruption.
"Yeah, no kidding," Lei muttered.
After what felt like an eternity, they reached the main hall. The space was vast, the roof partially caved in to reveal the starry sky above. At the center stood a pedestal, its surface gleaming with faint light.
"Jackpot," Mao said, leaping onto the pedestal.
"What is it?" Lei asked, approaching cautiously.
The pedestal held a single object—a small, crystalline orb that pulsed with an inner light. The energy radiating from it was unlike anything Lei had felt before, warm and inviting yet overwhelming.
"That," Mao said, "is a Qi Condensation Core. A treasure left behind by sects to help their disciples jumpstart their cultivation."
Lei's eyes widened. "That's exactly what I need!"
"Don't get too excited," Mao warned. "Cores like this are bound to something nasty. The sect didn't just leave it lying around for anyone to take."
As if on cue, the ground trembled. The rubble around them shifted, and from the shadows emerged a hulking figure. It was humanoid, but its flesh was twisted and decayed, its eyes glowing with an unnatural light. In its hands, it wielded a massive, rusted sword that dripped with black ichor.
"Guardians," Mao said with a sigh. "Always so dramatic."
Lei's grip tightened on his blade. "You couldn't have mentioned this sooner either?"
"I thought it was obvious," Mao said with a shrug.
The guardian let out a guttural roar, the sound reverberating through the hall. It charged, its movements surprisingly fast for something so large.
Threat level: High. Suggest evasive maneuvers.
"Yeah, thanks for that," Lei muttered, diving to the side as the sword crashed down where he'd been standing. The impact shattered the stone floor, sending debris flying.
The guardian turned, its glowing eyes locking onto Lei.
"Any ideas, Nanospirit?" Lei asked, scrambling to his feet.
Analyzing opponent... Weak point detected: chest cavity. Recommend precision strikes.
"Precision strikes, huh?" Lei glanced at the massive, decayed monster and sighed. "Easier said than done."
The guardian lunged again, its sword cleaving through the air. Lei dodged, his enhanced reflexes just barely keeping him alive.
"Mao! A little help here!"
The cat yawned. "You're doing fine. Besides, this is good training."
Lei growled in frustration. "Some mentor you are!"
The guardian's attacks grew more relentless, each swing of its sword coming closer and closer to connecting. Lei's muscles burned, his breathing ragged as he dodged and weaved.
Energy reserves at 60%. Sustained combat not recommended.
"Great timing," Lei muttered.
The guardian swung again, but this time Lei didn't dodge. Instead, he stepped in close, using the Nanospirit's strength enhancement to parry the attack with his blade. Sparks flew as the weapons clashed, the force of the impact nearly knocking Lei off his feet.
"Nanospirit, now!" he shouted, driving his blade toward the guardian's chest.
Targeting weak point. Deploying energy surge.
The blade glowed with a brilliant light as it pierced the guardian's chest. The creature let out a deafening roar, its body convulsing before collapsing in a heap.
Lei staggered backward, his body trembling with exhaustion.
"Well done," Mao said, sauntering over. "For a mortal, that was almost impressive."
Lei shot the cat a glare. "You're repeating yourself."
"Only because it keeps being true," Mao replied with a smirk.
Ignoring the cat, Lei approached the pedestal. His hands trembled as he reached for the Qi Condensation Core, half-expecting another guardian to appear. But nothing happened.
The moment his fingers touched the core, a surge of energy flooded his body. It was overwhelming, but also... comforting.
Energy compatibility detected. Qi channels partially opened. Recommend initiating cultivation process.
Lei smiled. For the first time since waking up in this world, he felt like he was truly beginning to understand it.
"Let's see what this world has to offer," he said, determination burning in his eyes.
Mao hopped onto his shoulder, purring softly. "About time, mortal. Now, let's get out of here before you trigger something else."
With the core in hand, Lei turned toward the exit, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.
