Chapter 17: Chapter 17: The Shadowveil Jaguar
The jaguar prowled silently through the underbrush, its emerald eyes glinting like twin jewels in the dappled forest light. Its fur shimmered faintly, the black and silver rosettes blending seamlessly with the shadows around it. This wasn't an ordinary predator. This was a Shadowveil Jaguar, a beast feared for its speed, reflexes, and nearly impenetrable hide.
Lei crouched low behind a fallen tree, his breathing shallow as he observed the creature. The jaguar's movements were unnervingly fluid, each step calculated and deliberate. It was a master of its domain, and Lei could feel the weight of its predatory aura pressing down on him.
"You sure this is a good idea?" Lei whispered, his grip tightening around the bandit's dagger.
Mao lounged lazily on a branch above, its golden eyes glinting with amusement. "Of course not. But you need agility, and this beast is the best teacher you'll ever have. If you survive, that is."
"Helpful," Lei muttered under his breath.
The jaguar's ears twitched, and its head snapped in Lei's direction. In a blur of motion, it lunged, covering the distance between them in the blink of an eye. Lei barely managed to roll out of the way, the massive claws slicing through the air where he had been a moment before.
"Fast!" Lei hissed, scrambling to his feet.
The Shadowveil Jaguar landed gracefully, its gaze locked onto him. Its stretchable skin shimmered, almost elastic, as it shifted its posture. Lei tightened his grip on the dagger and rushed forward, aiming for its flank.
The blade struck true-or so he thought. The jaguar's skin absorbed the impact, bending and stretching to disperse the force. The dagger left no mark, as if Lei had struck a mound of dense rubber.
"No way..." Lei muttered, his confidence faltering.
The jaguar retaliated instantly, its paw swiping at Lei with blinding speed. The blow sent him tumbling backward, his ribs aching from the impact.
Host's weapon is ineffective, the Nanospirit chimed in his mind. Recommended strategy: Blunt force trauma. Precision timing required.
"Thanks for the heads-up," Lei growled, forcing himself to stand.
The jaguar charged again, its movements almost a blur. Lei relied on the Nanospirit's predictive analysis, dodging at the last possible moment and retaliating with a qi-empowered punch aimed at the creature's side.
The impact caused the jaguar to stagger slightly, but its reflexes were razor-sharp. It twisted its body mid-air, using its elastic skin to spring off a nearby tree and pounce again. Lei ducked and rolled, narrowly avoiding another devastating strike.
"This thing's relentless!" Lei shouted, sweat dripping down his face.
"Stop whining and fight!" Mao called from its perch.
Lei gritted his teeth, focusing on the jaguar's movements. The Nanospirit provided constant updates, mapping out the beast's attack patterns and suggesting countermeasures. He began to anticipate its moves, his punches landing with more accuracy and force.
The battle raged on, each exchange pushing Lei to his limits. His strength was useless against the jaguar's speed and flexibility, forcing him to rely entirely on timing and precision. Slowly but surely, the tide began to turn.
After what felt like an eternity, Lei saw his opening. The jaguar lunged for him again, but this time, he didn't retreat. Instead, he stepped into its attack, ducking under its claws and delivering a powerful uppercut to its jaw.
The force of the blow stunned the beast, leaving it momentarily disoriented. Lei seized the opportunity, slamming his fist into its side with all his might. The jaguar let out a pained growl before collapsing to the ground, its body finally succumbing to the accumulated damage.
Lei stood over the fallen predator, his chest heaving as he struggled to catch his breath.
"Well done," Mao said, leaping down from the branch. "I was half-expecting you to get yourself killed."
Lei ignored the cat's jab, kneeling beside the jaguar's body. Using the Nanospirit's guidance, he extracted the beast's core, a swirling orb of condensed qi and vitality. As he absorbed its energy, he felt a surge of power coursing through his body.
His movements became lighter, faster, more fluid. The jaguar's agility had become his own.
Lei sat cross-legged at the edge of a small stream, letting the cool water soothe his aching muscles. The battle with the jaguar had been grueling, but the rewards were undeniable. He could feel the difference in his body, his speed and reflexes now rivaling the predator he had just defeated.
"You should rest while you can," Mao said, grooming its fur. "You'll need your strength for what's coming next."
Lei glanced at the bandit camp in the distance, the flicker of campfires visible through the trees. "I'll take my time. If I rush in unprepared, I'll just end up like that archer."
"Speaking of that fool..." Mao's tone turned sharp. "You should have killed him. He's probably warned the others about you by now."
Lei frowned, guilt gnawing at the edges of his mind. "I'm not a murderer, Mao."
"Then you'd better stop pretending to be a fighter," the cat snapped. "Survival isn't about morals, Lei. It's about doing what's necessary."
Lei didn't respond. Instead, he turned his attention back to the camp, his mind racing with plans and contingencies. He knew Mao was right. The bandits would be ready for him, and he couldn't afford to underestimate them.
As the night deepened, Lei resolved to face the challenges ahead with everything he had. He wasn't just fighting for survival anymore-he was fighting to become stronger, to carve out a place for himself in this unforgiving world.
