Immortal's Paradox

Chapter 10: Chapter 10: Refining the Flow

The sun hung high in the sky, casting dappled patterns of light through the dense forest canopy. Lei Chen wiped the sweat from his brow as he darted between the trees, his feet barely skimming the ground. He pushed himself harder with each step, channeling qi into his legs with increasing precision.

Qi distribution optimized. Host movement speed increased by 21%, the Nanospirit reported in its mechanical monotone.

Lei slid to a halt, panting but smiling. His newly-developed movement technique was no longer just a clumsy attempt to replicate Mao's vague instructions. It had evolved, becoming a Mid Mortal Grade technique with enhanced speed and agility.

"Not bad," Lei muttered to himself, catching his breath.

Mao, lounging on a low-hanging branch, yawned. "Not bad? You're celebrating a marginal improvement like it's the discovery of immortality."

Lei shot the cat a glare. "It's progress. Besides, your so-called guidance wasn't exactly comprehensive."

"I gave you the spark of inspiration," Mao said smugly, licking its paw. "If you're too talentless to fan it into a flame, that's hardly my fault."

Lei ignored the jab and continued practicing, refining the technique further. The Nanospirit assisted him, identifying inefficiencies in his qi flow and suggesting micro-adjustments. By the time he stopped for lunch, the technique had stabilized into something reliable and versatile.

Their journey resumed after a brief rest. The forest was eerily quiet, with nothing more threatening than the occasional bird or rustling of leaves. The lack of danger, while a relief, left Lei feeling restless.

"You're unusually dull for someone with a miraculous cheat device," Mao remarked, its golden eyes gleaming with mischief.

"What now?" Lei groaned.

"You've been practicing the same mediocre technique for hours," Mao said, leaping onto his shoulder. "Do you have no ambition? No creativity? Even a snail would find this progress sluggish."

Lei gritted his teeth. "If you're so unimpressed, why don't you tell me what I'm doing wrong?"

"Your lack of talent isn't something I can fix," Mao said, smirking. "But I must admit, your persistence is... almost admirable."

Lei stopped walking and closed his eyes, letting the Nanospirit's hum fill his mind. "Nanospirit," he said quietly, "analyze my body. Is there something holding me back?"

Analysis initiated... Host vitality: 87%. Qi capacity: 54%. Detected irregularities in meridians and dantian structure.

"What does that mean?" Lei asked, frowning.

Mao's ears perked up, its interest piqued. "Irregularities?"

"The Nanospirit says there's something wrong with my meridians and dantian," Lei explained.

Mao's expression darkened. "That would explain your sluggish progress. A damaged foundation is like building a palace on quicksand—it's bound to collapse."

"Can it be fixed?" Lei asked, his voice tinged with desperation.

Mao hesitated before nodding. "Yes, but it won't be easy. You'll need three specific spiritual herbs and high-grade Spirit Stones to repair the damage."

"What herbs?" Lei asked, his determination unwavering.

Mao leapt down and began pacing. "The first is Jadeleaf Primrose, a plant with silvery-green leaves that glow faintly under moonlight. It's known for its ability to repair damaged meridians."

Lei nodded, committing the name to memory.

"The second is Scarlet Vein Lotus," Mao continued. "Its vibrant red petals are infused with qi, capable of revitalizing a weakened dantian."

"And the third?"

"Azure Frost Orchid," Mao said. "It grows only in frigid environments rich in death qi. It is greatly sought after as it can purge impurities from the body, allowing for a clean slate."

"And the Spirit Stones?" Lei asked.

"They'll provide the raw energy needed to fuel the process," Mao said. "Without them, even the herbs won't be enough."

Lei sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Looks like the mine is vital for me as much as it is vital for the nanospirit."

"Indeed," Mao said, hopping onto Lei's shoulder. "But don't get your hopes up. Spirit Stones of the quality we need are incredibly rare, even in a mine."

Lei smirked. "Then it's a good thing I have you to guide me."

Mao snorted. "Flattery won't make me work harder. But I suppose I have a vested interest in keeping you alive."

As the duo pressed on, Lei's mind raced with plans. The journey to the mine had taken on new urgency, and his determination to overcome his limitations burned brighter than ever.

With every step, he practiced his improved movement technique, channeling his frustration into refining his skills. And though Mao continued to mock him, Lei felt a flicker of satisfaction every time the Nanospirit announced another small improvement.

By the time they reached the edge of the forest, Lei was exhausted but resolute. He wasn't just fighting to survive—he was fighting to reclaim his potential, to carve a path forward in this unforgiving world.

And with Mao by his side, he knew one thing for certain: failure was not an option.
