Chapter 16: The hunt

The forest was quiet, but Lu Fang knew it wasn't safe. The tall trees cast long shadows, and the rustling of leaves hinted at predators lurking nearby. The air smelled of blood , but Lu Fang felt calm. He wasn't here to explore—he was here to hunt.

He moved with purpose, his senses sharp. His fists were his only weapons for now, but that didn't bother him. He had faced many monsters before and survived. This time would be no different.

Then, he heard it: a deep breathing coming toward him. The ground trembled slightly, and Lu Fang turned toward the sound. Emerging from the shadows was a massive ox, at least seven feet tall. Its dark fur was tangled, and its red eyes glowed with anger. The jagged horns on its head looked deadly, capable of peircing anything in its path.

Lu Fang smirked. "A boss monster. Perfect."

The ox stamped its feet, steam coming from its nose as it got ready to charge. Lu Fang stood his ground, his body loose but ready. When the beast lunged, its hooves pounding the ground, Lu Fang dodged to the side and slammed his fist into its side.

The blow landed, but the monster barely reacted. Lu Fang frowned. He struck again, targeting its legs and chest, but the beast's thick hair absorbed most of the impact.

The ox roared and swung its massive head, its horns aimed at him. Lu Fang ducked, narrowly avoiding the attack, and countered with a punch to its jaw. The beast staggered slightly but remained standing.

"This isn't enough," Lu Fang muttered, stepping back to reassess. His fists ached from the repeated hits, and it was clear he couldn't bring the monster down with brute force alone.

He needed a weapon—something powerful and precise.

The system responded to his thoughts.

[F-Rank Weapon: Edge]

[Cost: 5 Points]

A description appeared in his mind: a blade designed for strength and accuracy, capable of cutting through even the toughest defenses.

Without hesitation, Lu Fang spent the points. Energy surged through him, and in his hand, a weapon appeared.

Edge was stunning. Its dark blade shimmered faintly, and its sharp edge glowed with a faint light. The hilt was wrapped in black leather, fitting perfectly in his grip. It felt like an extension of his own body—powerful, yet controlled.

Lu Fang grinned. "Now we're talking."

The ox charged again, its eyes blazing with fury. This time, Lu Fang didn't dodge. He stepped forward, meeting the beast head-on. With a single, precise swing, he slashed at its side.

The blade cut deep, black blood spraying into the air. The ox roared in pain, stumbling as its legs dropped. Lu Fang didn't let the monster get up. He moved quickly, delivering calculated strikes to its chest.

The ox tried to fight back, swinging its head in a desperate attempt to knock him down. Lu Fang ducked under the attack and drove the blade into its chest. The beast staggered, its breath ragged.

With one final slash, Lu Fang severed its throat. The ox collapsed with a heavy impact, shaking the ground.

A notification appeared.

[You have defeated F-Rank Boss Monster ]

[Points Earned: 100]

Lu Fang's eyes widened. "A hundred points?" He had expected ten, maybe fifteen, but this was far beyond what he imagined.

Before he could celebrate, a low growl caught his attention. He turned to see four hyenas emerging from the shadows, their glowing yellow eyes fixed on him.

Lu Fang raised his weopen Edge "You should've stayed hidden."

The hyenas lunged at him, but they were no match for his strengh and precision. Lu fang begun cutting them down one by one. Each strike was clean and efficient, the blade slicing through flesh and bone with ease.

[You have defeated 4 F-Rank Hyena monster]

[Points Earned: 20]

Lu Fang sheathed the sword, his total points now at 121. But he wasn't done. The forest was still full of monsters, and he wasn't about to waste this chance.

For the next hour, he hunted relentlessly. Wolves, boars, and more hyenas fell before his blade. Each kill added to his total, and by the time he was done, his points had skyrocketed.

[Total Points: 221]

Lu Fang stood in the middle of the forest, his chest rising and falling as he caught his breath. His clothes were torn, and his body ached, but the thrill of success overshadowed everything else. He had started this hunt with just seven points and now had over two hundred.

He glanced at his weopen Edge , a small smile on his face. "Not bad."

The journey back to the shelter was peaceful, the weight of his newfound points making every step lighter. He couldn't wait to tell Li Lan and Li Mei about his success, though he wasn't sure how he would spend the points yet. For now, he was just happy to have survived.

As the shelter came into view, Lu Fang allowed himself one last glance at the forest behind him. It had been a gamble, but it had paid off. He was stronger, smarter, and more determined than ever.
