The first person to enter the hall, despite my expectations, was not the world's fastest man. Not even someone who was usually inside the tower at all times. That's me talking about Black Noir, who is currently sharpening his knives. I wonder if he's just calming himself down or if he's seriously preparing for battle. Well, then he needs a sharper weapon, or at least a more appropriate one.
Instead, the first to arrive was someone I didn't expect to see here at all. Our underwater hero seemed determined to surprise me with his appearance. Despite the fact that he wasn't even called, he was here twenty minutes early.
- Sir? - Depth couldn't take the pensive look I was giving him.
- Yes, Kevin?
- Are you all right?
- If you're asking about my well-being, I'm just fine," I smiled wryly, inspecting my suit for damage. - And if you're asking about the situation around my person, you can find out everything you need to know on the Internet or any news channel.
- I'm sorry. I just found out about this recently and I'm still reeling.
- We'll save that conversation for later, when the whole team is together. Now tell me, Kevin. Why are you still in the tower?
- Where else would I be? - He asked with a stupid look on his face.
- I remind you that I just recently let you go home to your mother.
- Я... bought tickets for tomorrow.
- Well, now instead of two days with your family, you've only got a day. New film starts shooting, in case you remember.
- Would that be appropriate? Should I stay? - The guy asked, looking questioningly at the script I had in my hands.
- Do you really want to cancel the trip?
- No, no, of course not! I wasn't going to, I was just asking.
- Don't lose your head, Kevin," I sighed softly, seeing the familiar fear in Deep's eyes for the first time in such a long time. - Sit down, you can read before the others get here.
The guy took the script from my hands and carefully sat down in his seat, glancing at me occasionally. The feeling of annoyance only grew stronger when I saw his reaction. How much labour and time it had cost me to eradicate such an attitude towards myself! All it took was one super to ruin it for me. What if Becky had the same reaction? How would Ryan react? Well, I would hope that I would at least be listened to.
And while I gave in to reflection, the crowd had gathered in full force. No one said a word, waiting for me to act. Everyone was confused at the very least, but Starlight was the one who got the worst of it. She's the one who saw me right before I flew out on the mission. How does it feel to find out that the person you were having a nice conversation with in a coffee shop slaughtered a crowd of people a short time later? Personally, she was watching me too closely, trying to see something on my face.
Maeve looked a bit sterner than the others. She was extremely tense, watching me too. Sometimes I forget that this woman has an extremely belligerent nature. And now she was ready to take predictable action. It felt like everything had rolled backwards, making me cringe.
Stormfront alone remained unfazed, watching the reaction of the rest of the team with interest. Their fear and uncertainty clearly amused her, causing a slight smile to appear on the woman's lips. It was slightly infuriating.
- I'll start with the main point: We're in the shit. - The carefree smile was a slight contrast to the announced news, which caused the audience to cheer.
- We?" Maeve clarified, smiling wryly.
- That's right, dear. It's the Seven who are in a very bad state right now, reputation-wise.
- Wait, it was Seven who started that massacre in the middle of the day? - The new girl asked in surprise, deciding to take part in the dialogue. - That's news!
- Unfortunately, in the popular mind, that's exactly what it is, Stormfront. The Homelander is the leader of the Seven and the mascot of that brand, recognisable everywhere. And anything that affects him will affect the team itself. - Starlight explained kindly, glancing at the heroine. - That means if he sinks, we're next in line. They'll probably go through our dirty laundry to find something similar.
After hearing this, Train-A, who has not yet forgotten about his recent misdemeanour, became very tense. Accordingly, the media certainly hasn't forgotten about it. And there are plenty of such skeletons for everyone, though here's Depth has yet to be seen in such a thing.
- Thanks, mate. - The brunette smiled, but there was no sincerity in it. Nobody likes to be made a fool of.
- You mean Homelander's going to resign? - Kevin looked at me in shock, obviously not believing in that outcome.
- It hasn't been decided yet," I answered the question, drawing attention to myself. - Everything is quite ambiguous.
- Ambiguous? Hundreds of people were cut by your beams on live TV! - Maeve slammed the table with an excess of emotion, sending cracks across its surface. Not like the desk I had in my office.
- Maeve! Calm down!" shouted Starlight, rushing over to her to keep her from making a hasty decision. It was a good thing they were sitting next door to each other. - Please.
The men on the team chose to remain silent, and Train-A decided to move his chair back slightly. He had no desire to sit next to the heroine, especially in this condition.
- Homelander, we all want to know what happened. It couldn't have just happened, could it? - The blonde looked at me pleadingly.
- It couldn't," I confirmed her words, under the intense stares. - That's why the situation is ambiguous.
- Can you already tell me why? - Stormfront couldn't stand it, seemingly wanting to hear my excuses as soon as possible.
- I won't deny it, I killed those people. But not of my own free will," I finally spoke up when I was allowed to do so, without interrupting constantly. - There's a supervillain who's telepathic. I admit, after realising what had happened, I killed him. So the only one who can confirm the presence of this telepath. is me.
Pausing to let me digest the information. Everyone just stared at me, waiting for me to continue. But I'm not in the mood. So I guess we should call it a day.
- And now for the reason you've been summoned. You should calm down and just wait for the results, without contacting journalists and others. Until a strategy is developed," I calmly get up from my chair, glancing at the new girl. - First of all it concerns Stormfront. That's the end of it, I'll meet you at the film shoot.
Having said everything I wanted to say, I simply walked out of the hall, leaving them alone. I'm tired and I need rest. Preferably in bed and I need it to be raining outside the window so that I can look sadly at the drops falling down the glass. Clichéd, but I must have weaknesses too, right? Unfortunately, it was sunny in the city and no rain was expected. So I'll use the universal remedy for this problem.
- Is he upset? - I heard Stormfront's voice before I flew up the stairs to the top of the stairs.
Was I really upset? Why? Maybe they just didn't live up to my expectations? In the end, even the conversation with Stan Edgar came out nicer than I expected. And Adam and Seth, I'm not even talking about Adam and Seth! They really managed to lift my spirits. So what went wrong?
I didn't realise that I had reached my goal. As soon as I realised it, I stopped abruptly, soaring over the raging ocean. It was raining like a bucket, soon covering me completely with water. But it was only a minor obstacle, which didn't stop me from looking at the view that opened up. Right in front of me were waves for metres, surging upwards and crashing against the water surface, unable to find anyone to destroy under their weight. And for kilometres around, huge walls of murky raging water.A majestic picture that took one's breath away, aroused horror by its power and inevitability. Man has left his mark everywhere, in the remotest deserts, on the tops of the highest mountains, but the ocean is a mystery to him. A world hidden in the shadows. That's why I was here, so no one would stop me from blowing off steam.
His eyes lit up purple and pointed directly at the water, shooting out two thick laser beams a moment later. The raindrops simply evaporated before reaching the beam. Let alone the ocean, which boiled at their contact.
I spent twenty-odd minutes like that until I felt a slight burning sensation in my eyes. This made me stop abruptly, closing my eyes. It was only necessary to blink and breathe a little, and that burning stopped. And I recognised at least some of my limits, which was reassuring. So I wasn't that omnipotent, and that was good to know.
Finished with the reflection and dumping the stress on the innocent sea creatures, I flew out of there. What did I do next? I just flew, enjoying the wind in my face. I was enjoying it and no one was bothering me. But like all good things, that kind of fun was over very quickly, and I had to come back down to earth.
I returned home only when it was late at night, when all the residents should be asleep. Just like a couple of days ago, I climbed through the window of my room. I had no desire to even casually cross paths with Ryan or Becca at all. Sighing, I took off my water-soaked suit, tossing it to the floor.
It was at that moment that I had a burning desire to just throw the suit in the trash and forget the Homelander ever existed. But honestly, that's too easy, in my opinion. I'd rather face the problem head-on than run from it. I've put in too much work to give up so easily. There's plenty of chances to make things right, even though there's no way to bring those people back to life.
Suddenly there was a knock on the door, and I saw Becca behind it, in her nightie. She looked extremely seductive, except the situation wasn't what I wanted it to be.
- John, you're back?
- I am.
- If you're hungry, I left some food in the fridge," she said after a pause, glancing uncertainly at the door in front of her. - Just need to heat it up.
- Thanks, Becca.
She nodded and went to her bedroom, turning round before entering it. Changing into some simple clothes, I made my way down to the kitchen though. Where I ate dinner in silence, heating up the cold soup with heat vision. Today had definitely been a rough day, and a hearty dinner was more appropriate than ever. And I still haven't talked to them, though I admit today isn't a good day for talking. I feel as if I've lost all my eloquence along with my reputation.
- I'll have to talk to Stan tomorrow. - I said grimly, staring at my empty plate. We should clear things up as soon as possible.
