Chapter 52
“…Where are the others?” After seeing the scene just now, Su Ning had lost her appetite. She put down her spoon and looked at Lin Yu, asking anxiously, “The zombies got in… where did everyone go?”
“They left first.” Lin Yu picked up the spoon and scooped up a spoonful of white rice porridge, holding it to her mouth, and said calmly, “Drink the porridge; I added sugar, so it’s sweet.”
They left? They abandoned them and just left?
Su Ning was taken aback, and she dodged the spoon filled with white rice porridge that he held to her mouth. Slowly shifting from her chair to his lap, she embraced him and shook her head, muttering, “I don’t want to eat…”
Lin Yu put the spoon back into the bowl and placed his hand on her back, stroking her hair, saying softly, “What are you thinking about? Why are you unhappy?”
Su Ning hugged him even tighter, burying her head in his chest, feeling the warm temperature coming from his body, her eyes downcast and dejected, “…They must have wanted to abandon me… You were dragged down by me… I’m sorry… It’s all my fault…”
Cool fingers gently lifted her chin, and his brown eyes looked directly into hers, filled with fear, confusion, and insecurity. It was clear that being left alone in the supermarket had left a deep psychological scar on her.
“You are afraid,” Lin Yu said, his lips tightening as his fingertips touched the reddened corners of her distressed eyes, speaking earnestly, “You don’t have to be scared. I am very powerful; I can protect you.”
“Also, I will never abandon you…”
…
Several cars arrived at the concentration camp, ready for a brief rest.
Yan Zihao walked over to Bearded Uncle’s car, knocked on the door, and the window rolled down, but he didn’t see the people he expected.
“Where’s Su Ning?!” Yan Zihao, with one arm dangling, circled the car twice. He was sure he hadn’t seen her get out of the car, and then he asked, “And Lin Yu? Where is he?!”
Bearded Uncle opened the car door and got out, taking a cloth to wipe the grime sticking to the car door, and pointed to the last car, saying, “They’re in Mu Ling’s car; you go find them.”
Yan Zihao’s face twisted for a moment, “I was riding in that car, how did I not see them the whole way?!”
Bearded Uncle paused and put down the cloth, “Have you checked the other cars?”
“What do you think?” Yan Zihao’s face turned incredibly ugly, “I came from the last car, the people in the middle cars have all gotten out, and they were all empty; they were not there!”
“Don’t tell me you left them at the villa!” Yan Zihao’s fist clenched tightly.
Seeing the tense atmosphere, Hu Rong hurriedly got out of the car, saying, “Yan Zihao, don’t make it hard for Uncle. Mu Ling said to leave first to avoid blocking your retreat. She also said that Lin Yu and Su Ning were to get into her car. If they didn’t follow her, they must be in one of the cars here. Maybe they got out, and you didn’t notice…”
“They’d better be!” Yan Zihao’s eyes were filled with unmatched gloom.
He turned and walked toward Mu Ling, who was taking inventory of the supplies.
Li Yan came over to ensure Su Ning’s safety, and what he heard was this conversation. Distracted, he accidentally froze another car door….
…
“I indeed saw Lin Yu carrying Su Ning jumping down from the balcony. I thought they got in the car. Didn’t they?” Mu Ling asked, confused. “But why wouldn’t they get in?”
“Don’t play dumb with me!” Yan Zihao conjured a ball of fire with one hand, his face very gloomy, and his eyes fixed on Mu Ling, looking ready to attack at any moment. “You’re still resentful about Su Ning pushing you, so you deliberately left her and that madman together, right?”
“What are you talking about? I didn’t… I didn’t lie to you. I really saw them come out. Otherwise, why wouldn’t they open the door after you knocked for so long?” Mu Ling said, defending herself while slowly backing away, trying to hide behind Li Yan. But Li Yan sidestepped and looked at her with equally cold eyes, ignoring her defense and said coldly, “You shouldn’t have left her with Lin Yu!”
As the words fell, a ball of fire suddenly attacked her face. Mu Ling hastily gathered a water barrier, but the fire evaporated it into steam, offering no defense at all. The fireball got closer, and she could even feel its scorching heat on her face. Instinctively, Mu Ling closed her eyes, thinking she would have to spend points on a regeneration pill again.
The expected pain didn’t come. She smelled something burning and opened her eyes to see a barrier woven of grass vines floating in front of her.
Mu Yunfeng came over, his sharp gaze sweeping Yan Zihao’s face, calmly saying, “This won’t help now.”
“I’m giving you a car. You go back and get her. As for Lin Yu, you handle him yourself. If you can’t beat him, run. Don’t lose your life there…”
“You want to protect your sister?” Yan Zihao sneered.
“No, I will punish her myself.” Mu Yunfeng tossed him a set of car keys, “The gas tank is full, and the food hasn’t been taken out. Go, we’ll wait for you at the concentration camp for three days.”
Yan Zihao reached out to grab them, but Li Yan intercepted the keys, glancing at him coldly, saying, “Your hand is inconvenient. I’ll go with you.”
“Li Yan!” Mu Ling cried out, “You can’t go, it’s dangerous!”
Li Yan opened the car door and got in.
Mu Ling tried to stop him but was held back by Mu Yunfeng.
The car quickly drove away, and Mu Yunfeng turned to her, his voice grave, “Before leaving, I checked the gate. The new lock was deliberately opened, and fresh blood was sprinkled on the ground. Someone intentionally let the zombies in.”
“When the zombies attacked, I looked for you, but you weren’t in your room. When I saw you, you were coming up from downstairs, and it wasn’t your shift to patrol. You also gave us false information, making us think that Su Ning and Lin Yu were in Bearded Uncle’s car. To make bearded uncle leave without Lin Yu, you must have said something to him. I have verified it. So, your goal is obvious. You want Su Ning dead.”
“Leaving her with Lin Yu, even if the zombies can’t kill her, she can’t escape death when Lin Yu goes mad.”
“So, I want you to tell me, did you really let the zombies in? Risking everyone’s lives, sacrificing two ordinary people, and still so indifferent…”
“Tell me the truth, so I know whether my own sister is a monster!”
Mu Yunfeng pressed closer, and Mu Ling grew more and more agitated, her nails digging into her palm, “Brother, don’t forget, Su Ning wanted to push me out of the car!”
“I knew she was targeting you, so I planted a tree seed in her clothes to hear your conversations.” Mu Yunfeng’s dark eyes looked deep into hers, “Whenever you were alone, you always provoked her with words. Wanting to push you out of the car was because you said something very excessive… Her behavior in anger was wrong, so out of my selfishness for you, I allowed you to leave her at the supermarket… Now I think it was a mistake.”
“The one who should have been left there to fend for themselves is you!”
…
In the villa, Su Ning lies sideways in Lin Yu’s arms, her hands embracing him. She obediently sips the white rice porridge fed to her spoonful by spoonful by Lin Yu. Looking at the minced meat in the porridge, she questions with puzzlement, “Lin Yu, I thought there was no meat left?”
“I have a space where there’s lots of stuff,” Lin Yu replies without hiding anything from her. Seeing that she’s almost finished her porridge, he puts down the spoon and picks up the chopsticks. He tries to feed her a poached egg, but it’s too big for her to eat in one bite, so he breaks it into smaller pieces, mixes it with the porridge, and continues to feed her. He says indifferently, “You can eat whatever you want.”
“A space?” Su Ning is stunned. Is this a supernatural ability?
“Yes,” Lin Yu nods. Seeing her push his hand away with the spoon, shaking her head and mumbling that she’s full, he takes out a pack of tissues, pulls out two sheets, and wipes the porridge residue from the corner of her mouth. He then carries her to the edge of the bed, saying, “Put on your shoes; we’re leaving soon.”
As they are about to leave, Su Ning hesitates. She doesn’t want to see the gruesome scene of dismembered bodies again.
“Close your eyes; I’ll carry you down.”
“Okay.” Su Ning wraps her arms around his neck and obediently closes her eyes.
A new car is parked outside the villa.
Lin Yu sets her in the passenger seat, buckles her seat belt, rolls up the windows, and just before closing the door hears her ask, “Lin Yu, can I open my eyes now?”
Lin Yu glances at the shattered zombie bodies around the car and calmly says, “Not yet.”
He starts the car and drives away from the villa.
The staggering zombies attempting to follow are quickly left behind.
“You can open your eyes now.”
Su Ning rubs her eyes and finds they are driving on an empty highway.
Lin Yu hands her a plastic-wrapped, exquisite little cake, along with a small plastic spoon, saying, “It’s boring in the car; have something to eat.”
She takes it and finds the cake still warm. Surprised, she asks, “Your space can keep things warm?”
Lin Yu is silent for a moment, then nods, “Yes.”
He then hands her a bottle of warm milk.
Su Ning accepts it with both hands, filled with gratitude. Though she has just eaten and isn’t particularly hungry, that doesn’t affect her immense joy. Clinging to Lin Yu, she feels like she has struck gold. What could make her happier?
As for things like 1414, can they be as reliable as her Lin Yu?
Though the main character Li Yan is gone, Su Ning is confident that soon, when they meet again, his affection value will rise to a hundred. Lin Yu will take her to the base, which is also Li Yan’s destination. Using 1414 to locate him and find a way to encounter him at the base, she’ll leave once the affection value reaches a hundred.
She really dislikes this apocalyptic world.
All she needs to do is take care of herself and firmly hold on to Lin Yu as her support.
Sensing her warm gaze, Lin Yu simply thinks she must really love eating cake.
…
Li Yan and Yan Zihao drove back to the villa, their eyes chilling as they discovered the wreckage of zombies scattered across the ground.
They strode upstairs, finding the room door open, but the person inside had already left. On the table were bowls with leftover food.
The two turned and went downstairs. Li Yan suddenly stopped, his cold eyes fixed on the shoe prints on the stairs, imprinted on the zombie fragments. If these were footprints of people who had fled in a panic, they wouldn’t have stepped so slowly on each stair.
Following the footprints to the front door of the villa, they found a tire mark under their car, rolling over the lawn and directly through the villa’s gate, disappearing without a trace.
“Lin Yu took her away.” Yan Zihao’s brow furrowed, “There’s only Lin Yu’s footprint on the stairs. Did he knock her out and take her away?!”
“You’re overthinking it.” Li Yan glanced at him coldly, and considering Su Ning’s clingy dependence on Lin Yu, the only possibility was that Su Ning was afraid of getting her shoes dirty, or was too lazy to walk downstairs, acting coy and demanding that he carry her down, reminiscent of her behavior the previous night as ‘Little Cabbage’.
Li Yan frowned, wondering why the thought of Lin Yu knocking her out and taking her away felt more comforting than the idea of her clinging and asking for a hug.
“It’s not acceptable for Su Ning to be with him; it’s too dangerous!” Yan Zihao opened the car door and sat down, “He must have taken her to the base. Let’s drive. We’re not going back to the camp; we’re going straight to the base.”
Li Yan shook his head, speaking coldly: “There are too many ordinary people in the team. Without us, relying only on Mu Yunfeng and Mu Ling, two people with special abilities, they won’t reach the base.”
“How troublesome!” Yan Zihao complained, but said nothing further. With so many people, he couldn’t just stand by and watch them face mortal danger, but as for Su Ning…
“Lin Yu seems normal for now. If he really wants to do something to Su Ning, we can’t stop him. Let’s go to the base first, and once we see Su Ning, we’ll figure out how to bring her back.”
The car headed toward the camp.
…
Unbeknownst to them, the very Su Ning they were worried about was now full and satisfied, cheerfully lying in the car seat playing with a tablet.
Although she couldn’t connect to the Internet and could only play offline games, she was very content. Dora Lin Meng was like a universal treasure box. If it wasn’t for worrying about distracting him while he was driving, Su Ning might have run over to kiss him to express her joy!
The car drove along the edge of the city and into the sparsely populated suburbs, stopping at the entrance of a two-story house.
“I’ll go in and clean up; don’t get out of the car, just wait for me here,” Lin Yu said, patting her hair. Seeing her happily poking at a strawberry with a toothpick and obediently nodding her head, he opened the car door and got out. After locking the car door to ensure absolute safety, he walked towards the house.
Su Ning watched him enter the house, then turned her attention back to the strawberry she was poking at, focusing on the seeds. Bored to the extreme, she had to find her own fun.
But Lin Yu’s space was indeed amazing, with everything, even these fresh fruits that seemed to have just been picked. He must have raided a fruit store at the end of the world…
After picking out the last seed from a strawberry almost half the size of her palm, she put it in her mouth and took a big bite. The juice filled her mouth, and it tasted fresh, sweet, and satisfying, fulfilling her completely!
She took out the walkie-talkie Lin Yu gave her, pressed the call button, and coughed twice before saying in a serious tone, “Calling code 000, where is 000?”
“On the second floor,” Lin Yu’s voice came from the walkie-talkie.
Su Ning leaned against the car window, looking into the second-floor window, “Are there zombies inside? How many?”
“Not many, only two,” Lin Yu replied. He stretched out a hand, and thin, long silver threads with a metallic luster instantly emerged from his fingertips, weaving into a fine net. The net ensnared the two zombies wandering in the room, wrapped them like dumplings, and sent them out the back balcony. When they were at a suitable distance, the threads suddenly tightened, shattering the zombies into pieces, scattering them across the fields.
The silver threads transformed into points of light, disappearing without a trace. Lin Yu withdrew his hand, locked the door to the back balcony, and listened to the soft voice coming from the walkie-talkie, very low and gentle, “… then I’ll speak even softer. Be careful…”
“Mm,” Lin Yu responded, walking downstairs. After inspecting all the rooms, he exited the house and looked at Su Ning, who was holding the walkie-talkie, pressing her face against the car window, and waving happily at him. He felt an incredible softness in his heart.
This was a feeling he had never experienced before, like finding a long-lost treasure. He wanted to give her everything good that he had, and no matter how he spoiled her, it never seemed too much. She deserved to be loved and cherished by him.
Lin Yu walked over, opened the car door, and saw her immediately jump into his arms. Without any further excuses, Lin Yu supported her with one hand and locked the car with the other, carrying her into the house.
Su Ning nestled into a comfortable position, wrapping her arms around his neck, resting her chin on his shoulder, and murmuring, “The strawberries are finished. Later, I want to eat grilled fish slices, spicy flavor. No, first I’ll have milk to help digest. Or maybe I should take a nap first, hmm. I’m a bit sleepy, so let’s eat the milk and then sleep, and after waking up, have the grilled fish slices…”
Su Ning’s eyelids were drooping; she must have been tired from playing games.
“Mm.”
Lin Yu agreed, locked the front door, and carried her upstairs to the room he had just tidied, gently placing her on the bed.
But Su Ning clung to him, not wanting to let go, looking at him with half-open eyes, mumbling, “… don’t leave, stay with me…” She then moved aside, leaving half the bed space for him.
“You’re not going to have the milk?” Lin Yu asked, picking her up again and sitting on the bed. He began to take off her coat, shoes, and socks. Seeing her sleepy and obedient expression, Lin Yu couldn’t help pinching her rosy, soft cheek, but she frowned and dodged, hiding her face in his chest, her lips pursed as if to hang a pair of chopsticks, “… your hand touched my foot… dirty… can’t touch my face…”
These past few days, he had provided unlimited hot water for her baths, and all her shoes, socks, and clothes were new. She rarely even touched the ground, yet now she was criticizing him for being dirty.
Why hadn’t he noticed her being so particular before?
A flash of amusement passed through his brown eyes, and Lin Yu pressed a kiss to her forehead, his lips curving in an almost invisible smile. It seemed he had pampered a little princess.
But he was more than willing to indulge her.
…
After observing him for several days in the system space, the manager who saw this scene became somber.
The so-called spatial ability was actually a system store.
The spatial ability of the apocalypse could not even keep food warm, let alone refrigerate milk!
The only possibility was that he had directly exchanged these items in the system store using points.
If he wasn’t mistaken, Lin Yu must be an escapee.
An escapee, as the name implies, is a host who has escaped the system’s constraints.
No wonder he could detect the protective shield and even destroy and restore it.
This was troublesome.
Every escapee was several times more of a headache to him than a bug host.
Ordinary hosts were controlled by the system, with no autonomy. They could earn points only after completing tasks that passed system review, then exchange items, and continue to complete tasks… This was a virtuous cycle.
Escapees, on the other hand, could fully control the system and had autonomous power. They exploited the system without its consent, extracting high-point tasks from the main god’s space, cheating to complete tasks, and gaining high-point rewards.
For example, in system mall item expansion tasks, escapees would select high-point item collection tasks without being detected by the main god. Without the system’s oversight, they would acquire items through theft or force and other illegal methods, then review the tasks themselves and receive point rewards.
Each escapee was hard to catch because they could manipulate the system to perform free spatial jumps, unrestrained by the system. Often, when the manager discovered them and prepared to take corresponding capture measures, the extremely cautious escapees would directly leave the body they were controlling, entering some unknown world in one of the myriad worlds, never to be found again…
It seemed that the rational utilization of the ultimate weapon, Su, was inevitable!
