I Was Sold to My Mortal Enemy (Double Transmigrations)

Chapter 24 - II

After the commotion had settled, the village was once again buzzing with excitement. The reason was that the village chief, accompanied by villagers, went to Pei Xing and Song Ning’s home, celebrating their success with gongs and drums. Shi Yi then remembered that Pei Xing had taken the provincial examination.

“You even passed the provincial exam. Will you take the imperial examination in the future?”

Pei Xing shook his head. “I won’t take the imperial examination. Passing the provincial exam is enough. I don’t intend to become an official. The main reason for taking the exam was to avoid certain taxes.”

Shi Yi nodded thoughtfully and gazed up at him with a serious expression. “You’re so intelligent. If you decided to take the imperial examination, you’d probably pass.”

Pei Xing laughed and embraced him. “Baby, if you want to be the wife of the top scholar, I’ll take the exam.”

Shi Yi scoffed. “Don’t joke around. You will be forced by the emperor to marry a princess. As a lowly wife, I’d rather resign.”

Pei Xing leaned in, capturing Shi Yi’s lips in a passionate kiss. “I only want you as my precious wife.”

With Song Ning’s newfound status, the village’s gossip had dwindled. In five days, they were set to go to Baiyin City for the Luming Banquet.

Before they set off, Pei Xing asked Zhou Yan to gather the group that had gone hunting earlier, as they were planning to drive away wild boars to prevent future injuries.

Shi Yi recalled that Zhouzhou had mentioned that red lotus fruits grew in the mountains and begged Pei Xing to take him along. Upon their arrival, Shi Yi was relieved to see Zhouzhou and Chu Nan there. He quietly inquired about the location of the red lotus fruit, which was not far from the cliff they were planning to clear the wild boars.

As they reached their destination, while Pei Xing and the others were hunting wild boars, Shi Yi stealthily made his way to the cliff. A large tree with thick, curved branches stood at the cliff’s edge. Carefully, Shi Yi climbed up the tree and laid down on the trunk, securing his legs tightly.

As he looked down, he saw the bottomless abyss, causing his heart to race with fear. A fall from this height would surely result in a broken body. His heart pounded as he cautiously gathered a portion of the cloth bag.

Unbeknownst to Shi Yi, Liu Yingying, hiding behind a large tree not far away, observed his actions. An evil glint appeared in her eyes. She was indeed a cunning vixen. She slyly smirked, betraying her innocence, and her eyes revealed a calculating gaze. She pointed at a delicate and slender snake hidden in her waist and, with a sudden movement, threw it away. Then, she screamed loudly, shouting that there was a snake.

Shi Yi was already scared being on the tree, but Liu Yingying’s scream startled him so much that he almost lost his balance. As he heard her shouting about a snake, he instinctively tried to flee, but the slippery snake had fallen onto him. Panic took over as he attempted to escape, but he slipped and tumbled down the cliff.

Fortunately, the cliff was not completely barren; it was dotted with trees. Shi Yi was remarkably fortunate to collide with several trees in succession, ultimately landing on a thick tree trunk. But the impact left him unconscious.

.

Upon hearing Liu Yingying’s shriek, the people traveling with her rushed to her aid. They discovered a green snake as thick as a little finger under her feet and began using branches to drive it away.

Meanwhile, those hunting wild boars nearby heard the commotion and quickly approached, concerned that something had gone wrong. Seeing Liu Yingying in distress, they immediately rushed over.

Pei Xing glanced at her and looked around, there was no sign of Shi Yi. He asked if she had seen anyone else. But Liu Yingying was too terrified to speak, so she simply cried.

Compassion overwhelmed the men, who advised her to return home. With that Zhou Yan returned together with the wild boar hunting team to distribute the meat.

.

Zhouzhou frantically searched for Shi Yi, growing increasingly anxious when he couldn’t find him. He eventually told Pei Xing about Shi Yi’s desire for the red lotus fruit.

Pei Xing’s expression darkened as he swiftly assessed the situation. He examined the tree with fresh footprints and then looked at the bottomless cliff. With determination, he hopped onto the tree trunk, followed the footprints, took a couple of steps forward, and leaped directly off the cliff.

Chu Nan and Zhouzhou were horrified by Pei Xing’s daring actions and rushed to call him back. Zhouzhou burst into tears, while Chu Nan was about to offer to fetch help but he hadn’t even taken a step when they saw Pei Xing reappear at the cliff’s edge, holding Shi Yi in his arms.

Pei Xing had landed gracefully, completely unscathed while Shi Yi was in terrible condition. He had numerous injuries, particularly on his face, which bore deep scratches. His clothes were tattered, and his exposed legs and arms were covered in scrapes.

Overcome with guilt, Zhouzhou cried and repeatedly apologized, while Chu Nan stepped forward to embrace him and offer his apologies to Pei Xing.

Pei Xing removed his robe and wrapped Shi Yi in it, though his hands trembled uncontrollably. He shook his head, insisting that it wasn’t their fault and that they were not to blame.

Then, Pei Xing cradled Shi Yi and hurried home, moving so swiftly it appeared as if his feet barely touched the ground.

Chu Nan, having heard Pei Xing’s words, felt a sense of relief. After a moment of reflection, he realized that he had been anxious and confused, failing to consider the situation carefully.

Observing his young wife’s emotional distress, Chu Nan embraced him to provide comfort, quietly explaining the possible scene of how Shi Yi fell off the cliff. Zhouzhou, deeply shocked, remained in a state of shock.
