Chapter 44: Unexpected Guest

Unexpected Guest

Yuto challenged me to a one-sided duel and insisted that the sports festival was the time to settle it all.

What’s more, if I lose, he’s laid down the ultimatum that I can’t come anywhere near Sakura and Lilith ever again, completely disregarding my side of the story and all circumstances.

Additionally, word of the duel spread throughout the school, and even though I hadn’t chosen to participate in any sports festival events, I’ve been roped into this duel game.

The guys all sided with Yuto, assuming that if I’m defeated, they’ll support him. I didn’t even have the energy to argue anymore.

Sakura and the others tried to reason with him, but he didn’t listen, convinced that they were threatened into supporting me.

Thanks to all this, not a single thing from today’s classes managed to stick in my head.

Afterward, I planned to review the material, but when school ended, I went home with Sakura and the others.

However, Lilith, who usually starts conversations, remained silent. Her normally cheerful expression had turned gloomy, and she only followed a few steps behind as we walked together. When Sakura and I tried to talk to her indirectly, her responses lacked any enthusiasm.

“Lilith, you don’t seem to be your usual self since earlier. If you’re not feeling well, you can take the day off from work, okay?”

“Huh? Oh, no, I’m fine. I’m really okay,” Lilith replied with a forced smile.

“Lilith…”

Sakura, growing impatient, finally asked directly, but Lilith just smiled and said everything was fine.

However, even I, having known her for two months, could sense that her cheerfulness was somewhat forced.

It was clear she had something on her mind, but she had no intention of sharing it with  us.

Sakura pleaded with her eyes for me to ask as well, but I just shook my head, indicating that we’d have to wait until Lilith was ready to talk.

Apparently, Sakura didn’t appreciate this, as she gave me a cold glare. I decided not to mention how strangely nostalgic it felt.

Before long, Sakura sighed and began to speak.

“But seriously, Lord Braveheart is being incredibly unreasonable. He publicly declared a duel without your consent and arbitrarily set conditions like not associating with us if he wins… Just thinking about it makes me furious.”

“And fundamentally, it’s a personal grudge, isn’t it? He completely underestimated the Hero Syndrome.”

“Oh, that peculiar mental ailment that often afflicts people from other worlds. Could it be that the Braveheart Viscount family’s upbringing is to blame from the very beginning?”

“The young lady did mention that too. She’d heard about the potential for him to go berserk, but she never expected him to become so domineering just because of unrequited love…”

Even just thinking about it left me speechless. If you’re rejected, you should gracefully accept it, shouldn’t you?

As I pondered, Sakura suddenly said something unexpected.

“…I understand the feeling of getting frustrated and angry after being rejected.”

“Huh?”

Sakura’s face, smiling yet tinged with melancholy, surprised me with an unexpected resonance.

Why would Sakura wear such an expression?

“Even though you’re incredibly fond of someone, your feelings aren’t reciprocated. Just imagining it feels like the world is collapsing beneath you. Regardless of the circumstances, I can truly understand Lord Braveheart’s sorrow after being rejected.”

“Sakura…,”

I started, not quite sure how to respond to her sombre words.

The only thing I knew for certain was that I shouldn’t belittle the pain of heartbreak.

I’ve never experienced love in my entire life. Being in a constant struggle to make ends meet, I never had the luxury of spending my youth pursuing romantic interests.

So, when it comes to other people’s love, it inevitably feels distant to me.

If someone got rejected, I’d think they should just move on quickly. Confessing with no chance of success seemed foolhardy to me.

Every time I saw someone pouring their heart out to a Hakuma or to Sakura and the others, I’d silently scoff at their recklessness.

But perhaps love, even if it’s not always genuine, isn’t as easily abandoned as I’ve imagined.

As someone who had never experienced romantic feelings for another person, it was beyond my understanding.

But… I should stop brushing off heartbreak as something trivial.

Perhaps my silence wasn’t the response Sakura had hoped for, as she blushed and hastily waved her hands, flustered.

“Um, well, I was just talking hypothetically, you know? I definitely didn’t mean anything else!”

“You don’t need to be so embarrassed. Isn’t it something girls can understand better? I know you get it.”

“Huh? I-I mean… I don’t really understand.”

“Sakura, what’s going on right now—”

“It’s nothing at all!”

“O-okay?”

Why did I get scolded just for asking a question?

I don’t really understand, and now even Sakura seems upset. It’s probably my fault entirely, but I can’t think of the cause at all.

As I walk with unanswered questions swirling in my mind, my smartphone in my pocket vibrates. I take it out and check the screen, finding a message from the young lady.

⟪”Once you arrive at the mansion, come to the drawing room; there’s no need to change.”⟫

That’s all the message says.

I can’t quite fathom the intent behind it, but if it’s a command from the master, I can’t simply ignore it.

I was thinking about discussing Yuto’s situation with her anyway, so I decided to consider it a silver lining.

But first and foremost, I need to improve Sakura’s mood. After repeatedly apologizing, I managed to get her to forgive me.

===================

Arriving at the mansion, I follow the message’s instructions and make my way to the drawing room, still in my school uniform. I wonder what this is all about.

With that question on my mind, I approach the door and knock four times.

“It’s Isaya. May I come in?”

“Please enter,” I hear from inside.

“Excuse me.”

With permission granted, I step into the drawing room.

“Welcome back, Isaya.”

“I’m home, ojou…uh…”

In the room, the young lady stood with her arms crossed, but I was left speechless halfway through.

That’s because there was a middle-aged man in a suit who I didn’t recognize, bowing deeply in front of the young lady. It was a truly impressive kowtow.

Wait, what is going on here?

My brain refused to comprehend this unexpected sight.

Ignoring my stunned state, the young lady lowered her gaze to the man and addressed him.

“Please go ahead. I’ve called the parties involved, so feel free to make your explanations.”

“Y-Yes! I humbly apologize for the inconvenience my foolish son has caused you! I’m deeply sorry! Please, I beg your forgiveness!!”

“No, no! Um, well, actually, before accepting your apology, there’s something else I’d like to know…”

Why is this man suddenly apologizing to me?

I have absolutely no clue.

Who is this “foolish son” causing inconvenience to, anyway?

As I struggled to make sense of this abrupt situation, the young lady, in her noble demeanor continued with a smile.

“Hehe, panicking too much will only confuse him, you know? Viscount Braveheart.”

“Viscount!?”

I was so astonished by the name she casually mentioned that my jaw practically dropped.

The man currently prostrating himself in front of me is Yuto’s father.

This situation is beyond surprising.

Whew, it’s a good thing I didn’t address him so casually!

Regardless of whether he’s the head of a lower-ranking noble family or not, it’s just impossible to casually interact with him, even if I’m the duke’s daughter’s servant.

Even in a situation where a full-grown adult is kneeling before a girl nearly two decades younger, making him completely lose his dignity.

“Um, so… why has Viscount come here?”

“Of course, it’s because I called him. We need to have a little chat about Yuto Braveheart.”

“Ever since I received that message, my stomach has been constantly churning at the thought of what kind of insolence my son has committed…”

From the young lady’s summons and his son’s behavior, Viscount seems to be incredibly distressed.

Watching this, I can’t help but feel a sense of sadness.

I mean, this guy is on the brink of a breakdown over Yuto’s education mistakes.

Blaming him for Yuto’s educational failures doesn’t seem fair at all.

Besides, it’s already unusual that a duke’s daughter is calling the head of a viscount’s family.

Maybe the authority of the Scarlett Duke’s family is even greater than I thought.

The questions keep piling up, but for now, one thing is clear:

──What an ungrateful child that Hero idiot turned out to be!!
