Chapter 17: Part-Time Warrior, Gets Angry
Part-Time Warrior, Gets Angry
If we compare it just by the words “baito” (bait or food) and “petto” (pet), it’s clear that “baito” is inferior.
But even though I may be a slave and considered bait, I haven’t forsaken my dignity as a human, you know?”
I silently made this defense in my mind, without saying it out loud to anyone.
However, Sakiba-san has explicitly referred to me as ‘food.’
“Hahaha! This guy is just food!”
“I know, right?! Who would want anything to do with their food?!”
As a result, I became the subject of their mocking laughter. It’s not funny to me at all. Is this bullying?
When did the target shift from Sakiba-san to me?
“Hip-hip-hip-ha-ha-ha!”
And the way Pochi laughs infuriates me the most.
It’s like something straight out of a pirate manga, and it genuinely ticks me off.
I don’t want to admit, but it seems Pochi considers me a creature beneath him.
More than that… It’s unacceptable.
“Pochi! Don’t let that cheeky food guy off the hook! Knock him out!”
“Just so you know, Pochi used to be a former B-rank adventurer in another world! A scrawny food-virgin like you isn’t even worth his time!”
“Oink!”
While seething with frustration, I ended up barely noticing Pochi acting on my senpai’s orders and jumping at me.
However, my thoughts were elsewhere.
Thoughts like, “Is this what became of a former B-rank adventurer?” or “I never wanted to experience this in my life” swirled in my mind.
“Hey, don’t mock Tsujizono-kun! He’s, well… he’s a part-timer! He’s been working various part-time jobs and surviving as a part-time warrior!” Sakiba-san intervened, trying to cover up the situation.
The follow-up disguised as a defense from Sakiba-san didn’t bother me.
No, that’s not true; it hurt me deeply.
Was “Part-time Warrior” the best she could come up with? Because it had the word “warrior,” it didn’t necessarily imply a combat role. The fact that she’s not outright lying makes it even more hurtful, and I can’t help but admire her relentless approach.
Well, concerning Sakiba, I had to accept her personality as it was. I had no way to change that, so I should just give up quietly.
Or maybe it’s about time to deal with Pochi. As a former B-rank adventurer, his movements were surprisingly quick. If it weren’t for magic being restricted in this other world, he would have been even faster.
But…
“Hey!”
“Buhii!?”
I dodged the arm that was trying to grab me and surprised Pochi, whose intention was likely to finish the fight in one blow.
Seizing the opportunity while Pochi was off-balance, I grabbed his left arm, twisted it upward, and pressed down on his crouched back with my foot.
“Guuuaaaahh!!?”
Pochi screamed in pain, trying to wriggle free, but he was too weak to break free from the restraints, he was no match for me.
At the moment I had a grip on him, the battle was already decided.
“Po-Pochi was defeated in an instant…?”
“That’s impossible, right…?”
I address my bewildered seniors, who were at a loss, before they had even passed thirty seconds.
“Can I go home now that it’s over?”
“Damn it, if it weren’t Earth, we could have charmed you into submission in a second!”
“Remember this! I’ll be back. Let’s go, Pochi!”
“Buhii, buhii~…”
Spouting pitiful lines, the seniors hopped onto Pochi’s back and left in a hurry, like losers.
Well, since he nearly dislocated his shoulder earlier, they should have shown a bit more consideration… It seems that there’s no mercy for pets.
Feeling a mix of exasperation and pity, I walk towards Sakiba-san, who has a blank expression.
“Sakiba-san, are you hurt?”
“Ahh, no… I don’t feel any pain. Um, you’re strong, aren’t you? Where did you learn that?”
“I learned it during my time as an adventurer.”
“Adv- adventurer as a part-time job?”
Sakiba-san’s rare perplexed expression indicated that she couldn’t believe my answer.
Even if she reacts that way, I can’t deny it, as it’s true.
In the other world, the working age was lower than on Earth, and once you turned twelve, even children could work.
My parents noticed this and had me registered as an adventurer, a job with life-threatening risks, on their own without my consent.
I remembered being angry with my parents, asking why they would put their son in such a dangerous profession.
I cherish the memories of those days when I learned various skills and magic to fulfill various requests, and received combat training from my seniors.
Initially, even defeating a single slime was a challenge.
Tasks like subduing thieves were especially challenging as I tried my best not to kill them, but it helped me to avoid becoming a murderer in my line of work.
So, a situation like this wasn’t enough to rattle him. Also…
“Isn’t Pochi still not used to fighting in this world without using magic and just being a pet? That’s why I managed to win.”
“Umm, Lilith thought that Tsujizono-kun could have won even in the other world.”
“Well, if it were another world, I might have fallen under their charm magic…”
“In that case, it’s fine. Tsujizono-kun’s body has a slave magic crest that grants complete resistance to hypnosis and aphrodisiac effects, prevent slaves from being unreasonably taken away.”
“Huh, it’s that amazing…?”
I couldn’t hide my surprise at the high-performance ability of my identity that doesn’t fit my status.
If that was true, then the seniors’ defeat lines from earlier were nothing more than excuses.
Oh my… They suddenly feel even more like clowns.
Together with Pochi, it’s a rather pitiable story, isn’t it?
Just like when I misunderstood being drained of my energy, when people hear the word ‘succubus,’ most of them immediately associate it with sexual imagery.
However, despite this prevailing impression of succubi engaging with numerous men, Sakiba-san longs for a conventional and universal portrayal of a couple, making her appear like an outlier in contrast to the commonly perceived image of a succubus as a promiscuous demon.
Sakiba-san sighed wryly, her expression very somber. She was already being denied her dreams, and the prejudice against her species was further pushing her towards feeling inferior.
Observing her in such a state, a restlessness stirred within me.
For some reason, I didn’t want to see Sakiba-san looking so gloomy…
“If being a succubus means you can’t have a normal romance, does Sakiba-san wish she wasn’t a succubus? I don’t want to think that way, but I can’t help it…” I stated assertively.
“Huh?”
Inadvertently, my selfish frustration leaked out.
She stared at me with wide eyes, taken aback.
Nonetheless, I continued to speak with an urging feeling.
“It’s true that when you hear ‘succubus,’ it invokes erotic images. But, before being a succubus, Sakiba-san is a girl with a heart just like any human. It’s better to ignore those idiots who can’t understand such a simple thing.”
“Are you angry?”
“Yeah, I’m really pissed off. Back in middle school, there was an incident where a classmate’s wallet went missing, and just because I was poor, they treated me as the culprit.”
The only one who defended me in class was Hakuma, and it was an awful situation where even the homeroom teacher doubted me.
The incident was eventually resolved when it turned out that the owner’s wallet was in the inner pocket of their blazer. But… the shock of being falsely accused because I was poor didn’t disappear.
Even though our circumstances are different, I’m angry because she has been exposed to prejudice as well.
I’ve been looked down upon countless times just because I was poor.
I cursed my reality many times, knowing I had to work while everyone else was playing.
But lamenting the current state won’t change anything for the rest of my life.
You can’t choose where you’re born or the environment, but you can choose how you live.
So…
“You don’t have to conform to those prejudice and arbitrary images. If it’s something Sakiba-san chose for herself, it doesn’t have to resemble a succubus at all. At least, that’s what I believe.”
“Tsujizono-kun…”
Her purple eyes moistened slightly.
Soon, I regained my composure, but a moment of indescribable embarrassment welled up in me.
“Sorry, I spoke too much without thinking…”
Embarrassed by my impulsive outburst, I cover my red face with my hand as I apologize.
It’s quite pathetic of me, but it’s better than adding more shame.
Seeing me in that state, Sakiba lets out a small chuckle.
Oh no… she’s laughing at me…
I was almost on the verge of crying due to this heartless follow-up when she called me —
“Tsujizono-kun~”
Looking into her smiling face, which was as gentle as ever, I sighed in relief.
If she had recovered then it’s all what mattered…
With a playful laugh, she speaks.
“Well, you may have a ‘virgin vibe’ and it might not have been a perfect experience… but thanks, I’m happy.”
“…I wish you’d just accept it without teasing, then I could have been happier.”
I let out a sigh, slumping my shoulders, slightly exasperated that she had to add that last part.
But I suppose there’s no need for the final jab.
Oh well, as long as she’s back to her cheerful self.
For now, I’m just glad she’s feeling better…
