I was sold to a dangerous place in order to repay my parents’ debt, and I ended up being bought by a vampire young lady. I became the feed for the beautiful maid.

Chapter 14: When I woke up, there was a Shinigami by my bedside

When I woke up, there was a Shinigami by my bedside.

“Huh…?” As I woke up, the first thing I saw was the ceiling illuminated by the evening sun. It seemed I had been sleeping on a bed.

As I tried to sit up slowly, I realized that my head felt unusually heavy. It was like I had a rock in my brain… After rubbing my eyes with my right hand and taking deep breaths, I felt a slight relief.

“What happened again…?” I tried to recall the situation before falling asleep with my foggy thoughts.

I remember being taught housework at the mansion by Hizuki-san, and then…

“─You woke up, huh? It’s suicidal to let a young lad go through two days of bloodsucking.” (spoken by the Shinigami)

“Oh, right.”

I remember now. Due to stepping on a landmine, I was made to be bloodsucked without a day’s break.

So I collapsed from anemia, huh?

Considering it’s evening now, it seemed I hadn’t been unconscious for too long. My days of working part-time had thankfully given me some physical stamina.

It might be a small blessing in disguise that I didn’t lose consciousness for too long.

…Wait?

Who was talking to me just now?

As my consciousness became clearer, I finally noticed that fact.

I hesitantly turned my face towards the source of the voice… (and there stood) a human skeleton wearing a chef’s hat.

“Ahhhhhhhhh! What the heck!?” Naturally, I was so taken aback that I retreated too much and fell off the bed.

Ow… my butt hurts…

Despite the pain, I got up and looked again at the direction of the skeleton from beyond the bed.

The skeleton seemed to be crossing its arms, as if contemplating something.

Why is there a bone corpse wearing a chef’s outfit here?

Moreover, it’s moving and speaking, right?

“Mmm, it seems I’ve startled you.” (spoken by the Shinigami)

“I’d naturally be startled if I’m addressed by a bone corpse right after waking up! Wait, what? Was I taken to the morgue or something?”

“Don’t worry. This is your room, and it was I who brought you here.”

“Can’t find any comfort in that. Having a dead body invade my room is concerning!”

“Kukuku… Normally, that would be the case. But as you can see, I am very much alive! I am an advanced undead, an Elder Lich!”

“That’s why it’s freaking me out! Because there’s such a dangerous undead monster on Earth!”

This is seriously messed up. With the anti-magic wristband on, no matter how I struggle, I’d be killed in an instant. Goodbye maid-san life… I can’t help but feel pessimistic. But then, the door to the room opened.

“Isaya, are you awake? I heard a scream. Are you alright?” (spoken by the young lady)

“O-Ojou-sama!?” (I replied)

Entering the room was the young lady, my master.

Oh no…!

Even though I wanted to go to the young lady from the shadow of the bed, I can’t easily approach because of the Lich in the way.

I might end up rushed if it takes the young lady, the daughter of a duke, hostage, and the situation would be beyond recovery.

While I was panicking, the young lady, in contrast, looked around the room with a nonchalant tone, and then with an exasperated expression, she let out a sigh.

“Ahh~ I get what happened, so there’s no need to explain. Jajim, stop teasing the newcomer by using your appearance.”

“Hahahaha! It’s just a little joke, Your Highness.”

“Huh?”

Unexpectedly, instead of the expected development, the two exchanged words amiably, leaving me in a daze.

The Lich, who suddenly turned into a relaxed atmosphere, bows to me as I am stupefied.

“I apologize for startling you, young man. My name is Jajim. I am the head chef and butler of the Scarlet Duke’s household.”

“T-Tsujizono Isaya. I’m serving as the Princess’s slave—wait, the head chef!?”

“Yes. I heard from my master that she praised yesterday’s dish you made.”

“No way! I mean, you’re the head chef!?”

I caught a glimpse of the young lady looking surprised in the corner of my vision, but I decided to keep quiet about it to avoid getting literally fired.

(“This can’t be true… So, this person… person, yes, let’s stick with that. Anyway, this person, the Lich, was the one who prepared those incredibly delicious dishes?”)

Honestly, there are so many things I could point out here. The kitchen is a place where hygiene should be a priority, but why is an undead, the complete opposite of cleanliness, the head chef?

The fact that the food was so amazing is what’s unsettling me the most.

Though it’s a bit late to mention this, in the world of Verzeld, there are numerous monsters, just like the ones you see in games and manga. Well, since there are vampires and succubi, it’s not surprising to have goblins and dragons around as well.

When I first encountered them during my part-time job, it was extremely creepy. But now, having encountered hundreds of them, I’m so used to seeing them that I even think about which parts of the monsters sell for a higher price.

Of course, the majority of these monsters are dangerous both in our world and the other world. As a result, they are closely monitored by soldiers at checkpoints, and it’s prohibited for them to pass through the gates.

However, exceptions are made for intelligent and friendly creatures like the Lich, who can also visit Earth.

But, Liches require magic energy, the source of their life, to sustain themselves. Thus, they cannot wear the magic-sealing bracelets.

In other words, they can use magic freely on Earth if they so desire.

That’s why I was in such a panic just a moment ago…

“Well, it’s quite a shock, right? To see a walking skeleton that looks like a corpse, yet serves three-star level cuisine.” said the young lady

“After death, and still living, it’s too boring. I learned cooking as a way to pass the time.”(Jajim)

“Didn’t you die 70 years ago and it’s been 180 years since then? With so much time, you must’ve had a hobby or two to kill the boredom.”

“Hahaha, even as a vampire, it’s still too early for the young princess to worry about living a long life, you know?”

Seeing Jajim-san chatting so casually with the young lady, it’s hard to imagine him attempting anything reckless.

So, I suppose I can just interact with him as a superior in the same workplace…

…Although, getting used to a walking skeletal corpse might take some time.
