Chapter 10: My best friend is a unicorn. His preference is for lolicon
My best friend is a unicorn. His preference is for lolicon.
─ Someone, please make me feel at ease.
The current state of my emotions could be succinctly expressed as follows.
Firstly, the gaze of those around me is piercingly uncomfortable.
Walking alongside Sakiba, who is renowned as one of the two school beauties, along with Hizuki at Senrin High School, draws numerous envious glares from male students.
Comparing to the elegant Hizuki, many boys admire the friendly Sakiba. As a result, they direct looks that could almost kill at any moment towards me, who is accompanying her.
Secondly, a soft sensation dominates my right arm. Indeed, Sakiba isn’t just walking next to me; she’s wrapping her arm around mine, resulting in her ample assets being in direct contact with me.
Naturally, it’s impossible not to be aware of this, and my heart continues to beat loudly, refusing to calm down.
“Hehe, we’re getting quite a lot of attention, huh~”
“If you know that, why not back off…?”
“Oh well~ How about we give them a show with a kiss or something~”
“If we do that, I might never make it to the end of the school day again.”
I respond, avoiding Sakiba’s deliberately puckered lips while still feeling the weight of the surrounding gazes and the soft touch on my arm.
It seems that a future filled with envy and resentment from the male students awaits me. The reason they aren’t approaching us right now might be due to Sakiba acting as a deterrent.
Though I can’t help feeling like a beast suspended over a cage, I try to divert my attention from the surrounding gazes and the soft sensation on my arm. Together, we head to Class 2-C after changing our shoes at the shoe lockers.
As soon as we open the classroom door, our classmates, who had arrived earlier, gaze at us intently all at once. The chattering voices that had just been audible through the walls fall silent, and I can’t help but feel an indescribable pressure.
Wait, could it be that news of me walking to school with Sakiba has already spread to the whole class?
No, that can’t be right, can it? I mean, they’re just reacting to the fact that I, who was supposed to have dropped out after being sold to slavery by my parents, am here at school, right?
“Good morning, everyone~”
“Go-Good morning…”
While I stand there dumbfounded, Sakiba casually greets everyone and enters the classroom. How can she cut through this heavy atmosphere so effortlessly? It’s hard to say if it’s her strong mental fortitude or simply her nonchalant nature. Both seem plausible considering her personality.
As for Hizuki, who arrived earlier, I can see her quietly reading a book at her seat near the corridor.
Despite being quiet, her strong presence is immediately noticeable; no wonder she’s known as the school’s flower. At least she doesn’t glance at me when I come in, which is better than being found out about my interactions with Sakiha.
Having convinced myself of that, I ignore the persistent stares and head to my seat.
Although I was temporarily classified as withdrawn, I find my textbooks and other materials still there, which is a relief. Thankfully, they weren’t removed or anything.
“Looks like you’ve had quite a rough time, Isaya.”
“Hey, Hakuma.”
Hakuma, my best friend, calls out to me from the adjacent seat. I let out a sigh of relief and respond with a wry smile.
“I heard you got sold to another world and became a slave. How’s your butt holding up?”
“You don’t seem concerned about my safety but about my butt. If you’re going say something, at least make it in the front.”
“Haha. Well, I didn’t have that concern, it’s obvious that you’re still a virgin, Isaya.”
“Whether it’s a succubus or a unicorn, you need to stop sniffing out people’s chastity.”
“I know, but given my nose, it’s easy to tell that you’re still a virgin.”
Hakuma nonchalantly remarks, ignoring the discomfort his words cause.
Like Hizuki and Sakiba, he is also a unicorn born in another world. Though in human form, it’s apparently to adapt to life on Earth more easily. It’s rather unfair that transforming makes him handsome.
Well, no matter how good-looking you are, there are still flaws.
“Even though you know the girls who confess to you are being sincere, you don’t have to say, ‘Don’t talk to me with your impure voice.’ I can still remember the tearful face of that girl you rejected.”
“You know too, Isaya. The only girls I’m interested in are pure in both body and soul… and I see no one else in that category.”
“No wonder you end up being called a lolicon.”
“As a unicorn, it’s only natural. I have no intention of dating anyone who doesn’t meet that criteria.”
“Your rationale is what makes you a lolicon.”
Hakuma fearlessly declares.
Despite being handsome, he’s been ruthlessly turning down numerous confessions from girls. Anyone would feel hurt and angry if they were rejected in such a virginal manner.
He only smiles when he’s interacting with someone of the same sex like me or girls under ten years old.
Apparently, according to him, he values personality more than looks when it comes to potential romantic partners.
Therefore, his moniker is “Lolicon Prince.”
It spread as a retaliatory nickname from the girls he rejected, but I won’t bother defending Hakuma, given the insensitive way he handled those rejections.
Nevertheless, I can’t help but respect his unwavering resolve.
As I reflect on this, Hakuma unexpectedly asks me a thought-provoking question.
“However, don’t you see it as an opportunity?”
“Opportunity?”
“Yes. If you were sold as a slave, legally, your ties to your parents would be severed. In other words, you wouldn’t have to deal with them anymore. Moreover, your master allows you to attend school, so you won’t face any hardships in your future life.”
“! T-That’s… well, I didn’t consider it that way amidst everything else happening.”
Hakuma’s words are like a revelation to me.
While I haven’t completely shaken off the poverty mentality, I now realize that I don’t have to endure my father’s unreasonable demands or my mother’s hysterics, and I no longer need to give them money from my part-time job.
Even if circumstances lead me back to them, I won’t have any legal or emotional ties with them anymore.
Though it may seem simple, it feels like a tremendous weight has been lifted from my shoulders, freeing me from the burdens that held me back all this time.
Thank you, my lady…
As I gratefully acknowledge her, Hakuma interjects once more.
“So, who is the noble that bought you?”
“Lady Elinarese of the Scarlet Ducal House.”
“─Huh?”
At the mention of her name, Hakuma’s eyes widen in astonishment.
Considering his typically stoic demeanor, I’m genuinely surprised to see him so taken aback.
Eventually, he seems to gather himself and exhales deeply before meeting my gaze.
“…Isaya. I can’t believe you’re making such an outrageous claim.”
“I’m not saying it as a joke.”
“Well, mmm… I can’t imagine you making a casual lie, but the Scarlet Ducal House is one of the top noble families even in the otherworld Velseld. It’s hard to fathom that the young lady from such an esteemed family would have any connection with you…”
“Even from the perspective of a unicorn like you, they’re that remarkable, huh?”
Though it’s somewhat reassuring that he doesn’t outright dismiss it, the prestige of the Scarlet family is undoubtedly awe-inspiring, even to my best friend.
“If we were to compare it to Earth, you’re like a stray dog, and I’m a well-kept zoo panda. But when it comes to the Scarlet Ducal House, the gap is greater than that between a prime minister and a president.”
“Well, I won’t argue with that. But let’s move on, shall we? I’m intrigued by the reason why such a high-ranking lady from the Scarlet Ducal House would buy you.”
“That is…”
I hesitate in how to phrase it, but Hakuma’s skepticism is valid.
From the perspective of a poverty-stricken student like me, there seems to be no apparent reason why a lady from such a prominent family would acquire me.
It’s natural to think that someone like me wouldn’t even be on their radar due to the vast disparity in social status.
In reality, the reason she bought me was for the sake of her maids, Hizuki and Sakiha.
However, I find it challenging to honestly explain this. It would involve delving into their circumstances, not just mine.
Although Hakuma is my best friend, it’s not appropriate to delve too deeply into their situation.
Yet, I can’t bring myself to deceive him either, leading to an internal struggle.
Just as I’m contemplating how to explain, Sakiba herself suddenly reveals everything with a bright smile on her face.
“──It’s to have Tsujizono-kun as Lili’s food, you know~”
“What!?”
“「「「「「Huh!?」」」」」
She appears beside us without warning and dramatically exposes everything, leaving not only Hakuma but all our classmates utterly dumbfounded.
Naturally, everyone in the classroom is taken aback by her confession.
While I become the center of attention once again and feel rather uncomfortable, Sakiba remains at the epicenter, blissfully smiling, seemingly oblivious to the atmosphere around her.
