Chapter 6 - Salvation (1)
Salvation (1)
Blue sky.
As if hinting at my future, the weather was nearly perfect.
From early morning, Rein and I rode a carriage toward Setres village.
The notable feature of Setres village is that it has the only platform in this border region where you can board an airship.
Airships are one of this world’s transportation methods, flying from Setres all the way to the opposite side of the capital.
“Whew.”
In ancient Egypt, there was a myth that Ra, the sun god, crossed the sky riding a boat carrying the sun.
What was only imagination to me was now spread out before my eyes.
Truly marvelous.
Of course, I remember riding it a few times following the Asphodel family in the past, but given the situation then, I didn’t have the leisure to admire it like this.
-flutter! bang!
Three large masts held magnificent sails that seemed ready to fly at any moment.
The hull’s numerous windows reflected light, as if showing off the mansion-sized magic stone attached below.
Since it moves with magic power anyway, it means it flies well even if made unnecessarily luxurious.
Though they say it’s an era where magical tools have developed enough to be supplied to common people, magic stones of high enough purity to move an airship are rare.
I heard that commoners often don’t get to ride an airship until they die.
“What is this.”
My hands are full of sweat.
What I’m holding right now is an airship ticket. And it’s first class.
Though the ticket is in an envelope, it gleams as if gilded.
Thinking that I’m holding enough living expenses to feed a commoner family for a year makes sweat run down my spine.
-rustle.
I carefully opened the envelope and took out the ticket.
Two gold ones shimmered.
“Two tickets?”
Did they buy wrong?
I looked at Rein with a confused face.
Wearing a fascinator with a corsage, she looked every bit a high noble.
It’s stylish but also characteristic of vampires who don’t like sunlight.
From behind the black veil, her pretty lips dropped a word.
“Go handle the check-in.”
“The… tickets are for two people.”
Rein frowned as if she hated saying things twice.
“You and me. Is there anyone else?”
“I-I’m sorry.”
Crazy.
This is like the sun rising in the west. Oh right, in this place it actually rises in the west.
Rein bought two tickets. And even first class for me too?
This really doesn’t make sense?
When I went as a servant of the Asphodel family in the past, I was treated as luggage and rode with the cargo.
The anti-motion sickness magic wasn’t working properly so I got terribly sick……
“I’ll help you here. Could you tell me your information?”
I held out the tickets and answered.
“We’re from House Asphodel. Total of two people including my master.”
“Gasp, A-Asphodel…family?”
The counter staff’s expressions changed.
She stood up and kept apologizing.
“I-I’m sorry. We should have gone to escort you. We had no prior notice.”
At that moment, looking back, a pair of uniformed staff were guiding Rein somewhere.
Probably something like first class passengers’ waiting room where you stay briefly during check-in if this were an airplane.
“The silver spoon is different indeed.”
Putting aside my bitter feelings, I also headed inside the ship to organize the luggage.
Since the departure point was Setres, all first class seats were still empty.
Due to airship characteristics there are many passengers, but though it’s just a small room with curtains, table, and seats, it showed a lot of effort in luxury.
“Wow……”
From plush, stable sofas made of premium fabric to a bell to call attendants anytime.
Paintings that looked like they were done by master artists hung on the walls, and carpets with beautiful embroidery were laid on the floor under the tables.
It seemed almost wasteful just to ride for about three hours.
Setting aside exclamations, I carefully checked everything from lighting conditions to carpet material.
Rein is extremely picky, so even one thing out of place would twist her mood.
“Beverages and refreshments are prepared for your comfort.”
“Do you have things like gelato or sorbet?”
“Of course. I’ll prepare them.”
Though I won’t be eating them, thankfully.
If there are desserts she likes, she might bully me less until we arrive.
-clunk.
I finish unpacking before Rein comes up.
“We’ll handle this. Please go escort the young lady.”
Wow how many people are helping with the work?
Staff in well-fitted uniforms suitable for activity thoroughly escort us.
“Yes……”
My first time experiencing the position of power.
Unlike demon territory, the Empire seems to have surprisingly many similarities with Korea.
The power of capitalism.
Even a slave like me can receive good treatment if riding first class.
After finishing setting up refreshments, I went to get Rein.
And when Rein sat in her seat, only then did the ship blow its horn and depart.
-hooooooooot!
An artificial sound that’s unnecessary for an airship.
An hour later, the airship stopped at the magic city of Rafgenia.
“Haah… so noisy.”
-murmur murmur
Fitting for the home of magic, many young men and women who looked like students were boarding the ship.
They’re probably people going to Lachesis Imperial Academy like us.
And I haven’t even gotten to experience first class.
“I want chocolate cake.”
This is really dog-like.
Rein kept sending me instead of using the call bell right there.
Above all, she doesn’t even finish eating.
She puts down her fork after eating an amount that’s barely even a bite.
“Must endure.”
She’s inexplicably angry about something that bothered her so much yesterday.
Well, this kind of thing happened occasionally.
I hurried my steps.
Having savored the entire menu ending with this dessert, I had hope she might let me sit down at least once.
But
“Sorry but we just ran out of chocolate cake……” “Ah.” I let out a short sigh, but this is beyond that. This is an emergency.
“Hey, hey you there!”
A line that would only appear in light novels.
Someone seems to be acting like they know me, but I barely have any connections with nobles anyway.
When I ignored him, he grabbed my shoulder.
“I’m talking to you. Guy who looks like a girlhouse pimp.”
“?”
Though the informal speech to a stranger could be annoying, there are many nobles here so I have to stay defensive.
Girlhouse pimp… if I had to divide whether this possessed appearance is handsome or ugly, it should be closer to handsome.
If not for this delicate appearance, I might have died before proving my blood was delicious.
Somehow I couldn’t eat anything but vegetables since youth right after possession, but for an adult standard extra character, a usable appearance was created.
In exchange, I had to live without abilities for 10 years.
“Do you know me?”
“Oh my, oh my it is you. Brother. You must have it rough.”
At my question, the cheerful-looking brown-haired man smiled and put his arm around my shoulder.
With no dignity visible in his speech or conduct, it’s hard to tell if he’s a servant or noble.
“I heard rumors that vampire noble boarded first class.”
“…?”
“The whole airship is already buzzing about it. A demon race, and a vampire at that. I heard she’s so pretty?”
Rein’s face came to mind.
She’s damn pretty alright. And her personality is dog-like too.
“Why don’t you go see for yourself.”
“Just ask her to take off her hat, just the hat~”
Though first class isn’t completely closed off, it’s definitely segregated so general class people would have trouble seeing.
Is this person also a slave in first class?
“I have things to do. Excuse me first.”
“Wait, wait! Talk comfortably friend. We might become in-laws under the skirt in the future?”
He smiled and made a circle with his finger.
This world’s kids play jump rope with lines huh.
No time to humor his vulgar jokes.
Not so much because it insults Rein, but just because I’m also included in that hole brother-in-law talk.
“What’s it feel like with a vampire? Is she good to you? Does she bite you at night and stuff? I like getting stepped on too.”
He started shivering while hugging himself.
A serious pervert.
I’m curious about his brain. What does he think of master-servant relationships?
Did some country bumpkin get possessed into this world?
I didn’t want to respond but gave him a warning.
Since he might be found as a corpse tomorrow.
“If my master heard this conversation, I don’t think she’d kill you cleanly……”
“Agh, scary. I’m kidding, kidding. Come on, just once, just let me see her face once?! It’s not like it’ll wear out.”
“Let go.”
Despite my firm rejection, he started clinging to my collar.
-thud!
“I apologize. Excuse me.”
While I was wondering how to get rid of this clingy guy, fortunately it seems he had an owner.
A woman wearing what looked like Academy student uniform.
She’s short with straight purple hair, no intonation in her voice, and precise speech.
Though I don’t know why she’s being polite to me.
“Miss Seta~ I still haven’t seen her yet.”
She consistently ignores the man’s whining.
She’s skilled at it.
“Please ignore him. As an apology, I’ll give you ours instead.”
What she handed over was the chocolate cake Rein ordered.
Oh.
-drag drag drag.
Even while being pulled away, the man pointed his finger at me
“By the way, since you warned me too, I’ll give you one warning!”
“?”
He’s quite a hot-blooded character rare to see in fantasy.
“The Lachesis student council officers are walking around this airship. I heard they’re already marking people to recruit? You’re tempting prey so be careful! Oh my, I’m so jealous~”
What student council for a slave?
Besides being a demon’s servant, I don’t have anything special.
Let’s take it with a grain of salt.
-chatter chatter.
Maybe because we’d flown more than half the distance, many seats on the airship were filled.
Everyone was bustling with expectations about the Academy.
My goal was good for the Academy too, but it was right in front of me.
Remaining Seven Deadly Sins points: 5 Strength: 5 Endurance(Mental Power): 9 Intelligence: 5 Magic Power: 1 Flexibility: 8 Luck: 1
‘Just 4 more points and I can use magic.’
Last night, I ultimately chose to persevere.
As long as I don’t get involved in dangerous things, this is better for responding to variables.
Pride·Greed·Envy·Wrath·Lust·Gluttony·Sloth
I can recite it automatically now.
Let’s watch for opportunities appropriately.
There will surely be moments to gain points.
I made a firm resolution and headed to the single room where Rein was.
-slide.
“!”
A woman was standing in the curved corridor leading to first class.
“Are you the vampire’s human servant?”
She had hair even more pure white than the Saint.
No, it was shining silver. This subtly harmonized color was a rare beauty but created an unapproachable atmosphere. No emotion could be read in her cold expression and voice. She slowly approached me.
“…What are you…?”
And whispered in my ear.
“I will save you.”
“……”
…Who are you to say that.
