Chapter 2 - Saint (1)
Saint (1)
Vampires are strong.
That brief, intense strength is hard to express in any other way.
Among demons, intelligent vampires accumulate vast wealth and hold high positions in Pandemonium.
Especially as magical power manipulation spread, vampires as a race who wield magic through blood had exceptional potential from the start.
If they can get quality blood supply through blood bags, they can freely wield powerful magical power.
In other words, the best way for me to survive here is to be a blood shuttle while reading the room.
But who knows.
The game catalog clearly said you could defeat the Demon King with a strengthened character.
So wouldn’t I be given some kind of ability too?
-tap.
In the silence, only the sound of a teacup being set down echoed.
This is the reception room in Rein’s mansion.
This space alone is bigger and more luxurious than my entire house in my original world.
Though it’s much smaller than Rein’s family home, this vast mansion is entirely in her palm, and it was impossible for servants to leave it.
“Do I not need to go out to greet them?”
“No. They’re coming now.”
Word came that the guest was entering outside the reception room.
When Rein lightly instructed them to enter, a familiar woman came in.
“Saint…?”
Not flashy but noble-looking ceremonial clothes, a nun’s veil that brings peace of mind.
Between that solemnity, her grayish-white hair was beautifully braided.
Her friendly and youthful face held large blue eyes and pure white eyelids.
Instead of answering my surprised self, the Saint gave a light bow as greeting.
“You must have had a hard journey.”
“With the carriage you sent, it wasn’t hard at all. Has Miss Arein been well?”
The two exchanged pleasantries and sat down.
What kind of situation is this?
A vampire and a saint is an impossible combination.
Moreover, if Rein personally sent a carriage, there must be some reason.
“Ah……”
As soon as she sat down, the Saint glanced at me standing next to Rein.
Her fidgeting was like a cute rabbit.
Rein didn’t miss this situation and spoke up.
“I have something to tell the Saint.”
“Ah, what is it?”
“I received an invitation to the Imperial Academy.”
Rein placed a letter with silver trim on the table.
“W…wow. May I touch it?” “Of course.”
The Saint examined the letter curiously from various angles and smiled brightly.
“Imperial, wow. That’s really worth congratulating!”
She wore the most innocent smile in the world.
Not fake, but genuine.
Since receiving the oracle, the Saint had to stay in the monastery, so she never had a chance to go to the Academy.
That’s why this invitation must have been fascinating to her.
“I want to go to the Academy sometime too……”
After neatly putting the invitation back on the table, the Saint started glancing at me again.
Does she have something to say?
For me, this gaze was like sitting on pins and needles.
Rein took a sip of tea and spoke in a slightly colder voice.
“I decided to take my servant to the Academy too. It would be polite to let him say his final greetings to the Saint.”
The Saint’s deer-like eyes widened.
“W…what? You mean Ha-yu is going too?”
“That’s how it turned out. More importantly, haven’t you had something to say to my servant all this time?”
“Ah?”
“We’re leaving tomorrow, so why don’t you say it now?”
“You…you promised to keep that a secret!”
There was a strange accent on ‘say.’
I watched the situation with an anxious heart.
“Ha-yu? Want to sit over there?”
Where Rein pointed was none other than next to the Saint.
“…Excuse me.”
“Eep!”
The Saint’s cute reaction. A fluttering romance?
Looking at the thin-ice atmosphere, definitely not.
Even though peace has come between celestial and demon races, saints are the ones who produce holy water that’s fatal to vampires.
The fact that such a meeting could happen was due to the connection formed when I saved the Saint from danger in the past.
This feeling had somehow turned into love, coloring her cheeks red.
“So Ha-yu is going too……”
Fortunately or unfortunately, the Saint doesn’t seem to be very quick on the uptake.
When she couldn’t continue speaking out of shyness, Rein threw out a prompting topic.
“Wasn’t that the meaning behind the snacks you gave last time?”
“Ah! But that’s…”
The Saint lowered her head deeply while touching her innocent index fingers together.
Rein had no more questions.
Speaking of snacks, could she be talking about that?
Rein’s mischievous prank was about to begin.
I just hoped the Saint would let this conversation pass.
“The…cookie’s taste…”
A precarious tightrope walk.
‘No, don’t ask!’
This was a silent outcry.
Rein seemed determined to just drink her black tea until she finished speaking.
The Saint continued with a trembling voice.
“Since I couldn’t hear how it tasted, I wanted to hear Ha-yu’s thoughts……”
Cookies made with care for someone she likes.
There’s no way they wouldn’t taste good.
I remembered that precious but forgettable moment.
When Rein briefly left her seat.
Snacks received as a gift from the Saint.
Thinking it would be okay to secretly take one bite, I ate about two.
And at that moment, I was caught red-handed by Rein.
And what happened after is obvious.
The Saint seemed to have made up her mind and started rambling.
“You only ate two cookies then! There was orange cake too. Dame who grows oranges gave them to me as a gift. They’re very sweet because they got lots of sunshine. So I tried using them. My baking skills aren’t great, but the ingredients were good! So… though it’s embarrassing, could you tell me what you thought?”
Though her face turned red from saying too much, her expression looked relieved.
This was why she kept glancing at me.
It really wasn’t anything special.
For me, there are countless ways to express gratitude like ‘It was delicious’ or ‘I enjoyed it.’
And the unpretentious Saint would be happy enough with any one of those answers.
It was just a small wish from a pure and kind person.
“The be-” “Wait.”
If not for Rein’s interruption, a sentence starting with ‘the best’ would have been formed in my vocal organs.
She was sending me a cold gaze.
The Saint pleaded too.
“Miss Arein. Couldn’t you let me hear directly from him…?”
How much does a saint working at a monastery earn?
Since they’re objects of admiration, wouldn’t it be high?
Not at all.
Saints are icons of frugality.
It’s not about wanting material things.
These are cookies made by an apprentice saint saving penny by penny.
While I was choosing my answer again, Rein’s mouth opened first.
“Saint, I’m sorry to say, but Ha-yu didn’t eat the cookies.”
“What?”
The Saint’s round eyes became even rounder.
“Ha-yu, am I wrong?”
“……No.”
The Saint’s expression became dumbfounded.
As if she hadn’t expected this situation, her small mouth corners were moving involuntarily.
And Rein firmly instructed.
“Say it properly.”
I suppressed my inner feelings of ‘Saint, I’m so sorry!!!!’
“…I’m sorry. I threw them away.”
Rein asked back with a slightly smiling expression.
“Oh my, did you?”
The difference was so subtle that only I could notice.
You’re the one who made it so I couldn’t eat them.
She’s asking while knowing everything.
So I deliberately added one more line.
“I didn’t even touch them with my mouth.”
I wanted to end this conversation completely.
It’s better to be hated instead.
Finally, moisture began to form in the Saint’s large eyes.
“Huh?”
She wasn’t crying out loud, but just a few tears rolled down her smooth cheeks.
“Ah, what? What is it? I’m…I’m sorry.”
“To cry over mere cookies.”
Rein handed a handkerchief to the Saint.
Malicious bullying that would only appear in children’s play.
In play-pretend, roles return to normal when it ends, but here the roles remain even after the play ends.
I am a person who lived in 21st century South Korea.
Though it’s a divided nation, it’s not a place with endless civil war like here, and it has established security and laws.
Could the ethical views and interpersonal relationships built in such a place immediately adapt to this class society?
Sadly, even after 10 years, I as a person remained soft.
As much as longing for home, I couldn’t throw away the human compassion from an equal society.
And Rein knew very well that this pushover+sweet potato-like personality was my weakness.
As if deciding to drive in the wedge, Rein moved closer to the Saint’s face.
“Saint, could you look this way?”
“Hic….yes.”
The Saint forcibly raised her head to face Rein.
“Since we won’t be able to see each other often, I’ll tell you this. Ha-yu is my blood bag. Right?”
“……Yes.”
Rein wiped the Saint’s tear marks with the handkerchief.
“Then would I have any reason to keep Ha-yu as a servant if the Saint contaminated his blood?”
“Ah……contaminate blood?”
Stop it.
This is enough already.
Words that only echoed in my heart.
“Do you know what punishment Ha-yu received because of those two cookies?”
“…Pun, punishment?”
“For two weeks…”
“St…stop! Should I bring different tea?”
The words left my mouth before I knew it.
Rein had a slightly surprised expression.
And then a familiar sound effect was heard.
-ding.
