Chapter 9: she must be eliminated
Geoffrey's pov
I stood still like a statue and waited as the man in front of me gave me some information. He was still far from what I asked him to do.
"What about the Blood Mages?" I asked.
"The king wants more army out there but the ministers told him it won't be possible because of the Mate Games," he said.
"Dammit!" I swore, this Mate Games was getting in my way.
I looked to the side just to see a shadow in one of the pillars, I studied it for a moment to make sure it wasn't just a shadow.
It moved and I attacked, I sent a bout of magic and she dodged it swiftly. My eyes widened and I stared at the shadow still unmoving,
Nobody has ever dodged my attack or survived one either.
"You can go now," I said to my companion.
He walked briskly to the darkness leaving me to fend off whoever that was. I shifted closer and peered around, the moon was making it easier for me to see her outline.
I narrowed my eyes when I saw the mark on her forehead, hmmm.
So she was a moon maiden, what was she doing lurking around? They were not allowed to do that,
I stopped in my tracks, careful not to hurt her again. I couldn't kill her without attracting attention to myself and invite trouble.
She was important to the kingdom for now and killing a moon maiden in the middle of the Mate Games would attract the wrong attention and give the wrong people the wrong idea.
I watched her while she was behind that pillar and sighed to myself. I groaned internally because this little bitch had thwarted my plans.
"Another day then," I mumbled to myself.
If I couldn't kill her now then I would resort to other means, it couldn't be that hard. A sound from there had me freezing, expecting her to attack me but she tiptoed away like she was trying to sneak away and I almost chuckled.
Stupid girl, I wonder how she would survive in the Games.
I shook my head and silently retreated to my room where I could think properly.
Back in my room, peace escaped me. I was so anxious that the maiden from earlier would run to the king and expose our secrets.
I couldn't let that happen on my watch, my mission was more important than the games or whatever nonsense the ministers are up to.
"I can't let this happen," I told myself.
I sat on the bed and put my face in my hands to relax myself. Nobody can find out about us or we would be killed. But if I cannot get to the mood maiden then I know just who can do so and it would pass off as one of the rules.
Before I could talk myself out of it, I made my way to my sister, Margery's room. The weight of tonight weighed heavy on my mind like a heavy burden. If I could sit around and do nothing, I would but it felt like we were getting exposed with each minute I do nothing.
I knocked softly on the door, waiting for her response.
"Come in," Margery's voice called from inside.
I pushed open the door and entered, finding Margery sitting at her desk, her attention focused on a book. She has always loved reading books whenever she had free time.
She looked up, surprise flashing in her eyes at his unexpected visit.
"Geoffrey, what brings you here?" she asked, setting the book aside and giving me her full attention.
"I need to talk to you," I said, and closed the door behind me. "It's about the Mate Games."
Margery's eyebrows furrowed in concern. "What about them?"
I took a seat on her bed, my mind racing with how to broach the subject delicately. "I was talking to someone few minutes ago when I saw someone spying on us,"
Margery's eyes widened in alarm. "How so? I thought you were being so careful? How did you let this happen?"
"I don't know why I couldn't sense her in the first place, probably because I had no idea she would sneak out in the first place. I attacked her but she was strong, Margery, she evaded it like she had been doing it her whole life," I explained, my voice was tense with worry from being exposed. "If she wins the Mate Games, she'll have the power to expose us, we cannot afford that, Margery. I would have killed her myself but it would only invite trouble we couldn't afford,"
Margery's expression darkened with understanding. "You want me to eliminate her during the competition."
I nodded, feeling a pang of guilt at the thought of putting her under a whole lot of pressure, "I know it's a lot to ask, but if that woman is out of the picture, our secret will remain safe."
Margery sighed, running a hand through her hair in frustration. "I don't like the idea of playing dirty, but if it's necessary to protect us..."
I reached out and took her hand, squeezing it gratefully. "Thank you, Margery. I knew I could count on you."
"Did you by chance get a look at her face?" she asked.
I shook my head in disappointment, "I am sorry, it was too dark."
"It's okay, I will do my part," she assured me.
The weight of it left my shoulders and it sagged with relief.
We sat in silence for a moment, and I worried that it would make her change her mind. I have always been the one getting my hands dirty, I wouldn't allow my sister to do so. Iwas starting to think this was a mistake,
"I'll do whatever it takes to keep us safe," she said, her eyes never leaving mine like she was making sure understood she was all in.
I nodded, "Good,"
