Chapter 19
Chapter 19 “Rosie doesn’t know much about this place. What if you go out alone and get lost? I’ll go with you.” “You call that an excuse?” When I spoke as if urging, Lucas pouted his lips like a duck. “If I had just asked you to go with you, you would have said no…” “Of course, I would do it!” In short, he knew that I would scold him if he went with me, so he secretly got into the workers’ carriage, pretending to be luggage. I was shocked. Lucas must have noticed that I was holding back my anger, so he dropped his eyebrows and looked at me pitifully. “When we come back, I’ll take a separate carriage. I wanted to go to the square with Rosie and have a date, please, please.” “It’s not a date.”When I corrected him, Lucas made a sullen expression and turned his head. He even made a sarcastic comment saying it’s too late! As he said, we are already on board, so you can’t ask him to get off the moving carriage. The good news is that there are no other maids besides me, so I don’t have to explain my relationship with Lucas to anyone. I finally sighed heavily as I looked at Lucas, who was pouting. “… Just this once. If you do it again next time, I won’t let it slide.” Then Lucas’ sulky face brightened up. As if I knew it would happen. “Okay, I won’t!” “Try it again. Then I’ll tell them to open the door and get you out right away!” “Yes!” Of course, this carriage is your family carriage. I deliberately made a scary face, but Lucas smiled brightly as if he only heard my approval. “Rose is the best!”“Hey, get out of my way! that’s what happens when you don’t listen to me…” I shooed Lucas away from his attempts to cling to me and turned away with a grunt. I tried to go on a quiet outing alone… “It was bad.” I clicked my tongue. * * * The carriage soon arrived at the square. Indeed, as rumored, the square close to the Count’s residence was dazzling with huge boutiques and cafes everywhere. I saw this kind of scenery in the capital, but the center of the county was just as rich and splendid. “Wow, it’s really fancy, isn’t it?” I took a quick stroll around the square with Lucas. Lucas smoothed out the wrinkles in his shirt and put on his jacket and hat while hiding. He hid his appearance by wearing a hat, and his clothing was different from what was seen in the mansion. However, his shoulders were wide apart and he was much taller than other people, so he seemed to stand out. I made Lucas put his hat on even deeper and went to the watch repair shop to find Daniel’s watch. Lucas, who had been following me in silence the whole time, opened his mouth with a curious look on his face only when I was about to mail the letter to Lynne. “Are you sending it to where you used to live?” “Yes. By the way, there is a girl who is the same age as me. I lived in that house for 10 years. They’ll worry if I don’t send a letter, so I have to send it every week.”I answered casually. But Lucas’ face was strangely sullen. The eyebrows were strangely wrinkled, as if something was bothering him. “Why?” “I hate the idea of Rosie having a family other than us.” “…….” “I’m jealous.” Lucas expressed his feelings honestly and did not look embarrassed. In fact, he was very clear about his likes and dislikes, and he was the type of person who would get insecure if people he considered his own didn’t pay attention to him. That didn’t stop me from feeling uncomfortable with Lucas’s wary remarks about Lynne’s family. Instead of reassuring him, I chuckled. “I am grateful to these people who took me, who had no relatives, and kept me warm and fed me for 10 years.” “…….” “And you, too, will meet many people like that in the future. Even if it’s not Daniel and Colin.” There are times when surviving in this world is not possible with just the favor of your family. There will be times when you meet people who are more like family to you than your real family, and there will definitely come times when you rely on the kindness of others. Although Lucas has lived his entire life with Daniel and Colin, who he considers like family… Lucas is still younger than me, so he’s probably still immature in that respect. When I smiled slightly, Lucas looked at my face, bit his lip, and then released it. And he said it as if he was sighing. “I’m sorry, Rosie.” “Huh? What?” “… They were people who were nice to Rosie, but I was complaining about them. I’m sorry for being narrow-minded.” “Huh, you don’t have to apologize for something like that.” When I chuckled, Lucas looked even more sullen. It made me laugh because it looked like a large dog being scolded by its owner. “Alas, I feel you. But since we’re out here, you can pick whatever you want to eat. I’ll buy it for you.” “Rosie… Do you have money?” “Hey, I do!” Sure, I live on a paycheck as small as goldfish poop compared to you… “I have money to buy you a snack!” Still, I don’t think I have money to buy a snack for the boy who has been treating me like the youngest for over 5 years. When I raised my fist and shook it, only then did Lucas burst into laughter. He looked just like the young Lucas I knew. Still same. He’s just getting out of his boyshorts, but he is still my younger brother. While I was looking at Lucas with a happy face, he looked away and raised his hand to point to a stylish boutique. “Rosie, over there.”“Huh?” “It’s one of the boutiques run by Holden, and the perfume I made is sold there.” “Really?” “Of course, it’s only being sold at one place over there as a test….” “Really? Then shall we take a look?” Lucas and I looked at each other. We looked at each other quietly, and then, without anyone deciding who went first, we bared our teeth and smiled. * * * “Welcome.” The bell on the door jingled. I stepped with Lucas into the upscale boutique that Holden ran. It sold both women’s dresses and men’s tailcoats, and I heard that after Daniel was given the Earldom, he intentionally built the store to be larger than the other stores. Sure enough, the high ceilings were hung with glittering chandeliers and nearly a dozen sales associates were bustling about. I inwardly wondered if I was going to be kicked out for wearing shabby clothes. Then one of the clerks approached me. “Welcome. Is there something you’re looking for?” “Yes? Ah… I just want to take a look.” At my words, the clerk looked at me and Lucas in turn. Lucas put his hat on more deeply and avoided the clerk’s gaze. “By any chance, are you two getting married?” “What?” “We just got some new designs for wedding and reception dresses, would you like to take a look?” I wondered if this was just a ploy to extort money from me, a commoner, by trying to sell me a reception dress. “We are not getting married.” Lucas answered. “Yes? then….” “My girlfriend wants to go shopping.” Girlfriend?I gasped in disbelief. Lucas smiled beside me and shamelessly continued his lie. “I don’t need anything, but if you have any new arrivals, could you direct me to them? I’d love to see the perfumes.” “Ah, I see. Feel free to take a look around, and let me know if you need any help. Ready-to-wear clothes are this way, and if you need something custom-made, you can ask for me.” The conversation between the two progressed smoothly. When Lucas said that he did not want to be disturbed, the clerk with neatly tied hair smiled and left to do his job. It was professional not to lose his smile until the end. I looked at Lucas with a puzzled face. “… What a girlfriend. Did you say that because you were afraid the clerk would kick us out?” “Well, that’s right.” Lucas shrugged his shoulders and said. I looked around and whispered to Lucas. “I guess you guys did a good job training the clerks. I was worried that I would be kicked out because my clothes were so shabby. But I don’t think there is any such prejudice.” Lucas may have made that choice on purpose, but his clothes weren’t as flashy as they were when he was inside the mansion. Even when he sees me and Lucas dressed plainly, he doesn’t frown even once. As I admired it, Lucas, who had his hat pulled down even further, shook his head. Lucas’ gaze turned downward. “That’s not it. He saw the watch box Rosie had.” “Watch box?” “It’s a luxury watch that only a few are found even in the capital. Because you had that, he knew Rosie was a maid for a rich nobleman.” I looked down at Daniel’s watch, which I had retrieved from the watch repairman. The luxury watch, said to have been released in limited quantities by a craftsman in the capital, was neatly packaged in a box. ‘Ah, then that’s right. There’s no way a high-class boutique like this would treat me like a human being.’ Aside from spending that much money on a single watch, this is also quite materialistic. As I was inwardly disappointed with the warmth of the people, Lucas looked at me and smiled. “Let’s just take a look first. Those people may be friendly on the surface, but they probably don’t care much about us.” “Okay.” I walked around the boutique with Lucas. The boutique, said to be the largest in the square, had everything from women’s dresses to jewelry and shoes. There was also a small room covered by a curtain, probably a room reserved for VIP customers. “When you come here, you will be shown to a room like that and they will bring you clothes, right?” “It’s similar. If you can’t afford it, the designer will come directly.” I was truly impressed. It was a completely different world from the one I grew up in, wearing the same clothes for nearly five years since I became an adult. “Rosie, would you like me to buy you some clothes?” Lucas asked, tilting his head towards me. I shook my head, holding the watch box carefully and just looking at it with my eyes without moving my hand. “Not only will I never wear such high-quality clothes, I’ll be so scared that I won’t even be able to put them on even once.” “Still, I think it will suit you well.” Lucas muttered regretfully, but I was adamant. To me, this place seemed like a boutique with aristocrats as its main customers. I had no idea how much it would cost to make a custom dress. Even Lucas wouldn’t force me to buy something I didn’t like, and I didn’t want to weigh myself down with unnecessarily expensive items. ‘Just looking at it is enough for me.’ When else would I be wandering around the inside of a high-class boutique like this? Just as I was feeling simple happiness, Lucas gently grabbed my shoulder and turned me around. He pointed to one side of the boutique. “There it is, a place where my perfume is displayed.”
