Chapter 35: Chapter 35: The Future's Response
Back in his dorm room, Feng Qi took a cold shower before collapsing onto his bed.
Since Bai Fusheng couldn't give him the answers he needed, Feng Qi decided to dive back into the Dream Realm to look for more clues.
But after lying down for a moment, he opened his eyes again.
His mind was spinning with thoughts, preventing him from falling asleep.
Frustrated, he got up, walked to the fridge, and pulled out a few bottles of beer. Tilting his head back, he gulped them down one after another.
The alcohol soon brought on a warm, drowsy haze.
In his half-drunken state, Feng Qi fell into a deep sleep...
When he opened his eyes again, Feng Qi scanned his surroundings with a mixture of anticipation and apprehension.
Above him, the blood moon hung high in the sky, its crimson light casting eerie shadows across the barren land littered with skeletons.
This world had not become the beautiful utopia he had hoped for. It remained as desolate and cold as ever, almost untouched by his efforts.
Despite everything he had done, the future was still like this. The thought filled him with a deep sense of unwillingness and frustration.
The more he dwelled on it, the angrier he became. Seeing a weak zombie—"Little Cripple"—reaching out toward him with bony hands, he slapped it away in a burst of irritation and gave it a good few kicks for good measure.
[He's mad! Look, a zombie's gone and ticked off a half-dead human!]
Feng Qi: …
"Long time no see, Narrator," Feng Qi muttered.
[Hmm, can't say I missed you.]
Feng Qi: …
Taking a deep breath to steady himself, Feng Qi calmed his emotions.
As long as he could continue accessing the Dream Realm, there was still hope. He had a chance to change this future and save humanity. There was no point in getting angry or discouraged.
With renewed determination, Feng Qi disassembled "Little Cripple's" leg bones and set off toward the direction of Star City Shelter.
On his way, Feng Qi noticed a significant change.
The zombies he encountered this time had clearly evolved. Their physical strength had visibly improved, with faster running speeds and far greater resilience to his attacks.
He couldn't understand the reason behind this sudden development, but he pushed the thought aside for now. Reaching the Star City Database was the only thing on his mind.
He also hoped that in his private email, the "future him" would have left behind some key information or even final words to help him solve this mystery.
After navigating through altered terrain—trees shifted from their previous positions and new obstacles scattered around—it took him longer than usual to find the entrance to the shelter: the black stone monument.
This monument, too, had changed.
The once-faded words "Star City Shelter" were now clear and vivid, and faint silver metallic glimmers peeked through the blackened surface.
Feng Qi bit his finger and let a drop of blood fall on the stone. The monument recognized the blood and shifted sideways, revealing a corroded, rust-covered metal passage.
Without hesitation, he stepped inside.
The underground plaza felt larger than before, its vastness spreading into darkness. The central Star City Database remained unchanged, standing silently at the center of the space like a monolith.
Feng Qi made his way to the database, his steps steady and determined.
Reaching the terminal, he pressed the activation button.
The screen blinked to life with a familiar series of flickering symbols before the menu appeared.
He moved his finger to the search bar and typed in his own name: "Feng Qi".
The system processed the query, and soon relevant records floated onto the screen.
[Feng Qi (Cultivation Researcher)]
Age of Death: 26 years old
Cause of Death: Involvement in a classified event (details restricted).
Date of Death: June 23, 2031.
Lifetime Achievements (Honors):
Graduated as an S-Rank Excellent Student from Star City Academy.
Revised and released Tiger Fist and Body Tempering Technique (2.0 Version).
Recipient of the A-Rank Human Elite Medal.
Awarded the Outstanding Contribution to Human Development Award.
Evaluation:
Feng Qi displayed exceptional talent during his early years, quickly rising to prominence alongside Lin Ran as one of humanity's most promising young stars. His creation of foundational techniques like Tiger Fist and Body Tempering Technique made remarkable contributions to the development of cultivation studies.
However, following his initial success, no further research achievements were recorded. His mental state deteriorated over time, plagued by paranoia and anxiety. Described as restless and haunted, he eventually fell into obscurity and was expelled from the Tiger Soul Research Institute.
He met his end during a classified event, leaving behind a sense of wasted potential—a regretful loss to humanity.
"Netizen Comments:"
"Domain Grinder": From a historical perspective, if Feng Qi had maintained his initial momentum, he would have undoubtedly become one of history's greatest figures. Unfortunately, he passed away young, and his mental state reportedly deteriorated before his death. Truly, the heavens envy genius.
"Wind Walker": I've researched related records and found that Feng Qi spent a lot of time persuading Lin Ran to abandon researching cultivation techniques and focus solely on spell studies. If Feng Qi hadn't died so early, maybe he could have prevented a catastrophe that affected all humanity. History might have gained a supreme genius of spell studies—a monumental figure. Such a pity.
"I Knew It": If Feng Qi hadn't died young, perhaps he could have stopped Mu Qing from becoming the "World-Ending Overlord." It's said that Mu Qing didn't listen to anyone except Feng Qi. I even suspect that "Domain Transcenders" assassinated Feng Qi, leading to the chain of disasters that followed.
"Cola Drinker": I think Feng Qi simply ran out of inspiration. Sure, his early achievements were exceptional, but they also exhausted his creativity. Later, his inability to develop new techniques probably caused him such psychological turmoil that his mental health broke. In the end, it was just a matter of mindset.
"I'm the Mastermind": I suspect Feng Qi was possessed. The difference between his early and later self is just too drastic. He went from being an unparalleled savior-type figure to someone who fell apart before truly shining. This could very well be history's first recorded instance of possession, rivaling Wang Mang's "time travel" case.
This time, alongside personal evaluations, Star City Database now featured a Netizen Comments Section.
After reading everything, Feng Qi was left dumbfounded.
"Mental illness? Me?"
[Don't doubt it. That's you.]
Feng Qi: …
He remained silent, the weight of these claims pressing down on him.
Had he really lost his mind in this timeline? He couldn't be sure. With no way to verify, he decided to open his private email, hoping to find some key information left behind by his "future self."
He entered the private email code into the database and waited as the mailbox interface popped up.
With practiced ease, he typed in the 12-digit password.
The mailbox opened, and a series of entries began to surface.
Scrolling through the records, Feng Qi quickly realized something: this version of himself had practically treated his private email like a personal diary.
Most of the entries were just pointless rants and ramblings.
But amidst all the clutter, Feng Qi spotted a few critical pieces of information:
"Since I can no longer enter the Dream Realm, I've noticed that my body can store spiritual energy again. At the same time, I've lost the ability to grow stronger by hunting domain creatures. I don't know whether to feel relieved or disappointed."
"That bastard Lin Ran just won't listen. He's secretly studying cultivation techniques again. I beat the crap out of him for it, but don't worry. This kid will definitely change—mark my words. Just look at the future. He's changed, hasn't he? (Laughing.jpg)"
"You showed off too much in the early stages. Now that I can't enter the Dream Realm anymore, I'm still being praised to high heaven by those around me. It's so damn embarrassing."
"Mu Qing doesn't have any resentment toward me anymore. She's even come to see me as a friend. After asking her directly, I learned that she did, in fact, voluntarily participate in the Crimson Research Institute's rune-modification experiments. She wanted to complete the experiments that her family couldn't finish. So, what Bai Fusheng said is true."
"But that doesn't mean the Crimson Research Institute is innocent. I'm continuing my investigation because I still believe Mu Qing's betrayal of humanity is connected to this organization. The timeline shows she later participated in a classified mission involving the Crimson Research Institute. This mysterious group seems to be hiding countless secrets."
"If I die young and my cause of death is listed as classified… there's a high chance I was assassinated!"
