Chapter 13
Chapter 13. Heavy Casualties
"Ugh-!"
Even if it's a blind swing, it's not easy for hunters with depleted Stamina to avoid it continuously, especially in this chaos.
Eventually, one hunter got hit squarely by the club swung by the Goblin Centurion.
- Ughhhh... sa, save me—
Thud—!
The Goblin Centurion smashed down repeatedly on the hunter who fell, having been struck on the chin by a roughly swung club.
- No!! Seong-su!! You bastard!!
The death of one became the fuse that brought the battle's excitement to a peak, and the inexperienced F-rank hunters, caught up in this atmosphere, ended up engaging in reckless combat.
The goblins, whom I could usually easily suppress, oddly avoided my attacks well and their attack power became stronger, making me come to my senses.
But it was already too late; the situation was increasingly tilting out of control.
Like a sponge soaked with water, my body dragged across the ground, and in this urgent moment, I felt an oddly overwhelming drowsiness.
While briefly losing focus, I was attacked by a goblin that approached unnoticed and realized I needed to break formation and retreat.
It was truly a ragtag group.
- Heuk heuk, damn it!
As I came to my senses, more than ten hunters had died.
In the decades since dungeons began appearing, it was rare for such a high number of casualties to occur in a low-rank dungeon like a Goblin Dungeon.
It was, indeed, a massive accident.
"Ahhh! My leg! Don't tear it—don't tear it!"
I saw a woman being held by two goblins, her legs being pulled apart while she was beaten with a club.
Her weapon was nowhere in sight, and all she did was scream curses.
Unable to just stand by and watch, Lee Yeon-hee ran forward and drew her bowstring.
Thwang— Thud—!
Thuck! Thuck!
"Kieeek!"
Two goblins, hit in the arms and legs by arrows, glared and charged towards us.
【Acid Spray】
Fwoosh—
"Kieaack!"
【Heavy Strike】
Thwack—!
"Kieek?!"
I pounded the goblin, confused by the break of its club, into mush after it was hit by Heavy Strike, then checked on the Goblin Centurion.
'Is it too late to retreat? It's frustratingly impossible to surrender with the current number of combatants...'
Around the Centurion, there were still about ten goblins left, but there were nineteen surviving hunters.
Yet, it was the hunters who were hesitantly retreating.
'It's madness to attempt such a large-scale battle with only 【Double Smash】 or 【Combo】, 【Heavy Strike】.'
Of course, the Goblin Centurion was also badly injured. One of its wrists had been cut off somewhere.
It was clear that victory was possible with just a bit of sacrifice.
Winning this battle would also achieve the 【100-Person Battle】 milestone.
However...
'Greed leads to ruin.'
"Oh... the arrows are nearly gone..."
Lee Yeon-hee had only twenty arrows left in the quiver on her back.
There were no arrows left in her pocket dimension either. Quickly, I picked up and brought her a quiver belonging to a dead archer.
She hesitated momentarily before putting the quiver's arrows in her inventory.
Judging by the light in her eyes as she drew her bowstring, she seemed a bit greedy, too.
It was a good opportunity to obtain low-rank runes and achievements.
'I didn't expect to profit this much; now that it's come to this, should I see it through?'
It was originally Lee Yeon-hee and I who created this delicate balance.
Now that the distance between us and the hunters was not too far, they started conveying their intentions.
"Hey! Can't you get that skeleton soldier closer to the Centurion?"
"What? That's a bit..."
"What are you hesitating for? Don't you see people dying around you?!"
'Not something to say, considering they're driving others into a death trap...'
Standing in front of Lee Yeon-hee, I blocked the sharp gazes directed at her.
Meanwhile, as goblins once again rushed forward, Lee Yeon-hee and I communicated.
"Damn it!"
Naturally, the Centurion's target was the hunters who cut off its wrist, so the goblins didn't come towards us.
The injured hunters, seeing their chance, started moving in our direction, while Lee Yeon-hee tightly sealed her lips upon seeing them.
'It's a type that gets stronger the more obstacles there are.'
Although she usually disliked complexities and preferred solitude, the guild reviews of past battles showed that she was most active when there were people to protect.
Probably even now, she was steadfast in her resolve to protect the three hunters behind her.
"Ilwol, let's move closer, and if possible, take out the Centurion as well."
Nod—
Leaning forward, we moved slowly ahead.
Ting—! Thud!
'The goblins have grown stronger by killing hunters. This will be tricky since we only have warrior types left.'
It's not only hunters who level up by slaying monsters.
Monsters also kill people and grow, usually getting bigger and their physical stats increasing, occasionally evolving into variants.
Now, about ten hunters could fight properly.
A man with a large shield and another, seemingly the leader with an axe, were pressing the Centurion, while the others took on surrounding goblins, trying anyhow to deal damage to the Centurion.
Twip—! Thud—!
Luckily, we had a skilled archer. It seemed the Goblin Centurion also found Lee Yeon-hee's presence troublesome.
Breathing heavily, it shoved away the two men in front of it, opening space.
And it charged directly at Lee Yeon-hee.
But I, having been biding my time, charged at the beast from the side, sprayed acid on its face, and rammed into its body.
"Ahhhhh!"
The Centurion, covering its face, rolled across the ground.
I had used Stealth to dash forward and attack, so it was completely unexpected.
- What, what was that?! Whatever it was, keep piling on!
- Did that robed person spray acid?
- Nice shot, unni!
Despite struggling against ordinary goblins, the hunters kept their mouths running, which oddly reassured me.
'They don't even think I did it.'
A skeleton soldier spraying acid would be unbelievable, even if seen firsthand.
Stamina: 11/13 (-2)
I felt a bit defeated to see that my Stamina had decreased after ramming into the tough Centurion's body.
'This lousy body... anyway, we have to finish it off.'
Apparently thinking the same, three hunters immediately charged the Centurion without assisting their nearby comrades.
'Eager, aren't they?'
As I created a bit of distance, the hunters boldly engaged the Centurion, attempting to attack.
Whoosh ㅡ!
Smack—!
Ugh!
While on the ground, the Centurion swung its club, easily sending one hunter flying, rose, and recklessly lunged to seize and pull the man's shield.
"What the?! Let go of this!"
The shield bearer momentarily grinned upon seeing Hwang Cheol drive an axe into the goblin's back.
"Kuhyeeeek!"
"Hahaha! Die, you filthy bastard!"
But as if thinking the attack was finished with the axe thrust, when the Centurion swung the acquired shield back broadly, a startled Hwang Cheol retreated and tumbled, the Centurion then pouncing upon him to take a large bite out of his neck.
"Kyaaaaah! Khieeek!"
Crunch— Rrip— Crack!
Thunk-thunk-thunk!
With the Centurion and Hwang Cheol tangled together on the ground, the surrounding hunters simultaneously attacked its body.
Finally, the Goblin Centurion lay limp, its tongue hanging out.
"This, this is a potion!"
Yet, even pouring potions couldn't stop the blood spurting from Hwang Cheol's neck like a fountain.
As the other hunters fumbled, not knowing what to do, I swiftly ran over and smashed the Centurion's head with a club.
'Handling the end cleanly is key.'
Crack!
Crunch!
"Aaaah... Potion... more, save me..."
Hwang Cheol, who had his neck bitterly torn, cried out to his comrades pleadingly, as the surrounding hunters pulled out a few more potions to treat him.
Meanwhile, I couldn't hide my satisfaction at the notice that appeared.
- You have defeated the Goblin Centurion!
- Gained a small amount of experience.
- Obtained a low-rank mana stone. The mana stone has been moved to the Summoner's inventory.
- You have leveled up.
Simultaneously, I grabbed the gray rune rising from the Centurion's body and stored it in the inventory.
- Obtained a Rune of Vigor (low-rank).
Stamina +7
"What?! That skeleton soldier took the rune!"
"What?! Why'd it grab it?! Hey, summoner? Tell your skeleton to cough up that rune!"
"W-wait, let's finish first..."
Lee Yeon-hee's face visibly darkened amid the hunters' complaints, but she steadily reduced the remaining goblins with her bow.
To avoid disputes, I quickly allocated the stats from my level-up.
