Chapter 10
Chapter 10. The skeleton that clung to the ceiling
The slime hastily aimed for the ceiling upon seeing the light, but I thought, 'Too late.'
Given the slime's slow speed, the only tactic it could employ was to wait on the ceiling beforehand and spit acidic liquid while suffocating the startled enemy, then melt and consume them.
However, this series of actions had already been disrupted.
The battle had tilted in our favor the moment we took the initiative.
We placed the torch on the ground and immediately commenced our attack.
Pew-! Pew-!
Our initial goal was to move the core, and Lee Yeon-hee quickly accomplished that with two arrows.
Instead of aiming precisely at the core, she shot rapidly to surprise them.
······!
The two slimes that were first to climb the wall and reach the ceiling were startled and moved their cores downwards.
Thud-! Thud! Thud! Crash!
I swiftly shattered the slime's core with my nearly worn-out club.
The other three slimes clinging to the walls seemed to sense the danger, halting their movement and starting to quiver.
Lee Yeon-hee swiftly covered herself with her robe, and I charged without hesitation, grabbing two slimes and tossing them toward the entrance.
Pew-phew-! Sizzle-!
As I grabbed them, they shot acidic liquid at my face, sizzling away at my facial bones, but I thought, 'I'm not afraid since there's no pain.'
I ran towards the slimes that had collapsed at the entrance, spitting my acidic liquid at them, too.
Whoosh—
Sizzle—
······!
It was apparent that being hit by acidic liquid was a first for them, as their bodies skyrocketed in all directions in a chaotic manner.
'What about Lee Yeon-hee?'
She was already plunging a dagger down into the core of a slime.
One side of her robe was covered in acidic liquid, but I recalled that this robe was a cheap, made-for-slime one.
It seemed she purchased it after nearly falling victim to a slime.
Although it was low-end, it wouldn't get holes after just one exposure to acidic liquid.
Crash-! Crack-!
A single swing of the club exhausted its durability, turning to pieces. I discarded the shattered club and repeatedly dropped a rock I had picked up on the ground.
I managed to kill four slimes in total.
And astonishingly...
- The trait 【Kleptomancy】 is activating.
- The trait of a regular slime is stolen at random.
- You have obtained the trait 【Adhesion】!
'Oh! Did I just beat the 10% odds?!'
- The level of the trait 【Kleptomancy】 is increasing. The odds of stealing a trait rise by 1%.
'Could it be that I'm a blessed character?'
【Kleptomancy Lv.2】
- Steal skills randomly upon first monster kill.
- Steal traits randomly with an 11% chance upon repeated monster kills.
One could think the odds were met since I killed ten monsters and stole a trait.
But from my experience, a 10% chance was regarded as extremely low, often unsuccessful even after trying thirty times unless lucky, making my joy enormous.
Moreover...
-----
Adhesion
- Your body can stick firmly to any surface it touches, without falling off.
-----
'This trait could come in handy...'
The utility of this trait seemed substantial, doubling my joy.
As I contentedly nodded while gathering the slime cores, Lee Yeon-hee hurried over to me and exclaimed.
"Wow! Did Ilwol gain another trait?! At this rate, you're going to become stronger than I am!"
I noticed that she seemed to be aware of my Kleptomancy success without touching me, indicating she shared the experience with me in real-time.
'Surpassing her... No matter what, there's no way I'd currently outdo Lee Yeon-hee.'
Of course, we had no chance to verify that, so I just quietly observed her.
Her eyes sparkled as she brushed my hand a few times before asking.
"Can you show me the adhesion?"
I was also curious about the ability, so I eagerly moved toward the wall.
'Do I just place my hand against it?'
I placed my hand on the wall, but felt no different sensation than usual.
'Hmm... perhaps if I concentrate my magic power and will myself to use adhesion...'
Then I felt my hand stick to the wall as though it had become one with it.
'Oh, I get it now. Thankfully, this seems like a switchable ability.'
Had adhesive liquid constantly excreted from my body, I'd likely be cast aside by her soon.
Squelch— Squelch—
Making squelching noises like honey was smeared on bone, I began climbing the wall.
'Perhaps I can suppress these noises with practice... This is amazing.'
Though my movement speed was incredibly slow, this ability was primarily for preparing stealthy attacks, so I could account for that.
Upon reaching the ceiling, sticking like a spider without falling, I heard Lee Yeon-hee squeal in delight below like a child.
'Can I jump down from here?'
Plop—
Crash!
After testing the ability sufficiently, I let myself drop from a height of three meters, only for my knee joint to twist unnaturally upon impact.
'What a fragile body.'
After carefully adjusting the misaligned part, we resumed our path.
"Pffft—"
···?
"I'm sorry, but you setting your bones back in place reminded me so much of old ladies in the neighborhood going 'Oh, my knee'."
"Clack—"
"Hmm, I should be wary of this too."
Nonetheless, I decided to abstain from any actions that may humanize me.
Step, step—
'Moreover, there's a problem with my weapon breaking... I'll have to snatch some goblin weapons.'
And ten minutes later.
Lee Yeon-hee spotted four goblins chasing after a group of mole crickets.
Without hesitation, she readied an arrow on her bowstring.
I grabbed a couple of stones of a decent size from the ground and aimed one at a goblin encircling the mole crickets, throwing it with all my strength.
【Dagger Throw】
Smack—!
"Keke—?!"
To my surprise, the goblin hit by the stone staggered and eventually fell, unable to keep its balance.
Witnessing this, the other three goblins growled and picked up their clubs.
Swoosh— Thud—!
"Kreee!"
After seeing Lee Yeon-hee's arrow pierce another goblin's skull, I activated Stealth and dashed forward.
Magic power: 5/9(-2)
"Kierre! Chaka!"
One goblin was wildly swinging its club, appearing to believe it could achieve perfect defense, its eyes filled with madness.
Crash—!
After smashing the head of the goblin that was hit with the stone again with another stone, I claimed its club.
"Chaa! Kieeek!"
At that moment, my stealth wore off as two goblins lunged at me.
But...
Thud—!
Lee Yeon-hee's arrow pierced deeply into another goblin's side.
I pretended to swing the club at the remaining goblin, only to spray a wide shower of my acidic liquid from my mouth.
Whoosh—
"Kieeek!"
Its face sizzling under the acid, the goblin screamed in agony.
Phew— Thud—
Unable to counter our combined attacks, the goblins met their end against Lee Yeon-hee's arrows and my club.
Thud— Thud—!
Ensuring the twitching goblins met their grim fate by smashing their heads for certain, a series of messages appeared in my mind.
- You have slain goblins!
- You gain a tiny amount of experience...
- You have gained the lowest-rank magic stones...
- Your level has risen.
As expected, given my low-level, leveling up was swift, having killed merely a few slimes and goblins.
I swiftly allocated my stat points to Strength, Agility, and Stamina, moving on to the next task.
Strength: 12(+3), Agility: 11(+3), stamina: 13(+3)
"Now I'm ready to face D-rank low-level opponents."
Contented with my growth pace, I nodded in approval.
This time, I searched the goblins' pockets first, finding 3 silvers.
I also severed their ears, placing them into the bag Lee Yeon-hee handed me.
'This trivial task can be handled as naturally as breathing, making it more efficient for me to do it.'
Encountering a mimic and acquiring an artifact would cut down on our effort, but otherwise, such trivial tasks were inevitable.
Lee Yeon-hee seemed oddly fascinated by my adept handling of the task, watching with an amazed expression.
Silver, goblin ears, lowest-rank magic stones.
These combined would bring in about six thousand won per goblin, after fees.
Despite possessing silver, the income was low because the silver carried by goblins had little worth due to low silver content.
While it was a mystery as to why monsters carried silver to begin with, I didn't care as long as it had monetary value.
By managing to dispose of twenty monsters a day this way, we could earn around 120,000 won.
I wasn't sure how much rent she had to pay, but after a few days of hunting like this, she would face less financial difficulty.
"Ilwol, could we manage to kill 30 a day at this rate? Encountering them seems to mean instant dispatch!"
I understood her excitement.
For her, who had likely been hunting alone until now, killing ten in a day would've seemed like a success.
With a prospect of seeing those numbers doubled, her enthusiasm was natural.
'In any case, Lee Yeon-hee was passionate enough about earning money.'
It was clear to me that her motivation wasn't solely about money or obtaining a good artifact.
Squeal— Squeal—
"Oh dear, this poor mole cricket..."
A mole cricket, having taken a few clubbing hits by a goblin, was collapsed on its side, trembling.
'No chance of survival with its head bashed in, huh.'
I moved briefly in front of her, imbuing 【Heavy Strike】 into the club, and brought it down forcefully.
Thump—
"Ugh..."
