Chapter 11
“What is it?!”
“An ambush! It’s an enemy ambush!”
Suddenly, arrows flew in, and the Brance Army’s camp began to fall into disarray.
I quickly assessed the situation.
Unfamiliar soldiers were attacking from both flanks, squeezing the Brance Army.
‘What…?’
At a glance, their numbers appeared to be roughly equal to the 8,000-strong Brance Army.
Such a large force was suddenly ambushing the Brance Army.
“Th-This is…?!”
Cain, who couldn’t make sense of what was happening, looked around bewildered at that moment.
Then, a man approached us rapidly from over there.
His attire matched not the Brance Army but the soldiers who had ambushed them.
The man stopped in front of Cain and asked:
“Are you Commander Cain of the Lunarien Army?”
“It’s me.”
“Indeed, just as I’ve heard.”
The man removed his helmet and said:
“I’m Kale, the deputy leader of the Raven Mercenary Unit.”
‘Raven Mercenary Unit?’
That term popped into my head.
The Raven Mercenary Unit—an elite group equipped with specialized archers known as ‘Raven Archers.’ Hiring them required clearing certain events and paying a hefty sum. Though their numbers weren’t overwhelming compared to the cost, they boasted superior attack and defense capabilities, making them highly valuable allies.
There were other mercenary units in this game too, but the issue here was why *this* group showed up now when they shouldn’t have.
‘If my memory serves, these guys aren’t supposed to appear right now.’
To hire the Raven Mercenary Unit, one needed to conquer three castles first. Without fulfilling even that basic condition, they were already helping us out.
Cain asked incredulously:
“How did you recognize me?”
“I’ll explain later. Aren’t you currently under attack by the Brance Army?”
“That’s correct.”
“We’ll assist you.”
With that, the man left.
As soon as he departed, I shouted loudly:
“All forces, charge!”
WAAAAAAH!!!
Encouraged by the sudden reinforcement, our army charged bravely against the seemingly overwhelming 8,000-strong force while the disorganized Brance Army started collapsing easily.
Though we had slightly fewer than 8,000 troops overall, having the Raven Mercenary Unit on our side made this battle winnable.
Moreover, the man earlier mentioned something meaningful about recognizing Cain, which hinted at some deeper planning.
Just then, Cain slowly turned toward me and asked hesitantly:
“Swoen… could you have anticipated this?”
“…”
I closed my eyes slowly and acted like someone who foresaw everything.
“It’s fortunate they arrived in time.”
Inside, I chuckled at how convincing my line sounded. Anyone watching would surely think I was an incredibly smart strategist.
“C-Can this really be happening? Swoen, what are you…?”
By now, Cain must be utterly shocked. And deep down, he’ll start thinking: “Maybe I should listen to Swoen.” Even if not immediately, I knew I’d keep proving myself repeatedly because my predictions are always 100% accurate.
Thus, I believed—
We’d definitely win this war. If victory wasn’t possible, my conclusion would’ve been retreat.
Confidently, I yelled again to the troops:
“Victory belongs to us! Fight with all your might! Let’s defend Jeilrant together!”
—
“Calm down! Maintain formation! Prioritize eliminating the archers!”
Despite being ambushed by archers from both sides, Kalintz managed to reorganize the disrupted ranks of the Brance Army.
‘Damn it!’
Upon closer inspection, there were far more archers than expected—perhaps even exceeding 8,000, creating a terrifying impression.
“Aaaah!”
“General, please retreat!”
“What?! How dare you…”
One of Kalintz’s aides screamed before dying instantly after an arrow pierced his head.
Startled, Kalintz retreated briefly but thought grimly:
‘I can’t flee without conquering Jeilrant Castle…’
This expedition aimed at pacifying Central Continent meant a lot for Brance. They had already crushed Walnut Army effortlessly, so losing to Lunarien—a fraction of Walnut’s strength—was unacceptable. Especially since Kalintz hadn’t yet achieved any significant accomplishments compared to his older brother, impatience crept into his usually composed demeanor.
Still, instead of recklessly charging forward, he quickly strategized. He judged that once the archers were dealt with, overcoming the intercepting force wouldn’t be difficult.
“Stay calm! Reorganize into three groups and focus on clearing the archers first! Our numerical advantage gives us the upper hand! Do not fear; annihilate them one by one!”
Retreating wasn’t an option. Following Kalintz’s command, the soldiers split into three groups and charged toward the archers on both flanks and the Lunarien Army ahead.
Though suffering casualties, things seemed manageable. Victory appeared within reach.
‘Where did these people come from?’
These archers didn’t bear Lunarien insignias, meaning they belonged to external forces—mercenaries perhaps?
But how could such a small army afford mercenaries of this scale?
After engaging them several times, their exceptional skill became evident. If their infantry count had been slightly lower than Brance’s 8,000, defeat would’ve been likely.
‘Damn it!’
Still, capturing Jeilrant Castle would compensate for losing a few thousand men. Thinking thus, during the fight…
“Ka-Kalintz-sama! Behind us! An ambush from behind!!”
“What?!”
Kalintz couldn’t believe it—another ambush from behind?
Being attacked from all directions would devastate their divided forces.
It clicked now. This was a carefully planned ambush with timed attacks!
Realizing he’d been manipulated, Kalintz clenched his teeth.
‘What went wrong?’
Intelligence suggested only around 3,000 enemy troops existed. Had they hidden reinforcements and waited patiently for the invasion?
Reflecting on it, Lunarien’s lack of preparation despite nearby threats seemed suspicious. They remained peaceful despite news of neighboring conquests reaching them.
But viewing it as a calculated ruse makes everything clearer. The current crisis proves it.
‘Lunarien Iniyan… she’s formidable indeed!’
“Please withdraw! Continuing will result in total annihilation! Make a decision, Kalintz-sama!”
Another aide pleaded urgently. After brief deliberation, Kalintz decided to retreat. With no guarantees of further ambushes…
“Retreat! All forces, retreat! Officers, spread the order quickly!”
“Yes sir!”
Turning his horse, Kalintz gritted his teeth inwardly.
‘Lunarien… I’ll avenge this humiliation someday!’
—
Near the walls of Jeilrant Castle.
“Haaa!”
Tifa swung her massive axe, literally cutting through enemy soldiers while defending the castle gates alongside others.
“Don’t keep dribbling in! Charge all at once, you bastards!”
“Haaa!”
Beside Tifa, Queen Lunarien herself wielded her sword at the forefront, slaughtering enemies aggressively. Unlike commanders Cain and Swoen who stayed back to issue orders, both women fought fiercely due to their high combat prowess.
The surprise attack came from Garammil Army, rulers of Hoeo Castle nearby. Their leader, Garammil Reitas, watched the battle with a bitter expression.
Currently, the battle was at a stalemate. Garammil brought 4,000 troops, outnumbering the defenders, though exact numbers were unclear. Still, given the difficulty of sieges compared to defenses, breaking through the gate guarded by those two monsters seemed impossible.
Their opportunity arose thanks to a secret pact with Brance Army.
Garammil kept sending small waves of troops merely testing the waters.
“Master, how long must we continue this meaningless skirmish?”
Responding to his strategist’s query, Garammil nodded slowly.
“Soon, word will reach us of Brance attacking the castle. We’ll join then.”
They mobilized under duress essentially. No need to die unnecessarily when joining later suffices.
However, this prolonged deadlock puzzled him. Intelligence reported only around 3,000 Lunarien troops. Even splitting forces for interception shouldn’t delay things this much. Moreover, facing Brance—the de facto ruler of Central Continent—should’ve been easy.
‘What’s going on?’
At that moment,
“Master!”
A scout rode in reporting the situation ahead.
“What is it?”
“The Brance Army… they’re retreating after being defeated!”
“What?!”
Brance losing to a mere interception force of less than 3,000? When clearly more than 1,000 defenders remained here? Plus, the famed warrior Tifa was fighting here, leaving only an old man among Lunarien’s commanders.
Too many inconsistencies baffled him, but decisive action was needed now.
“Master, what shall we do?”
“Hmm…”
No point risking lives when the main force, Brance Army, was retreating. Garammil swiftly decided.
“Fall back! We’re returning to our territory!”
“Yes sir!”
Garammil’s army quickly regrouped and withdrew from the battlefield.
Seeing this, Tifa approached Lunarien.
“What’s this? Those bastards are running away without a proper fight. Should we chase them?”
“…No. That’s enough.”
Lunarien lowered her weapon and surveyed the scene.
“Did we… hold them off?”
‘Have we defended Jeilrant Castle?’
WAAAAAAH!!!
Cheers erupted among the defenders as they watched the fleeing enemy.
The grand invasion of Jeilrant Castle by Brance and Garammil Armies ended in failure.
And the victor was none other than myself—Lunarien Iniyan.
