Chapter 2: First Day at Cosmos Academy
It was easier than I thought to accept the fact that I had become the protagonist of Legend of Academy.
The appearance visible to my eyes and the horns I could touch with my hands were too distinct.
My cheeks were so soft and my horns so hard that it was impossible to think it was a dream. They were the cheeks of the number one softest character in Leoa.
How could I be confused when I had seen the same illustration and heard the same cute voice countless times while playing Leoa?
Moreover, the academy uniform I easily found in the closet even had a name tag with the protagonist’s default name, ‘Murmur,’ written on it.
“Hoo…”
Just from this, it was an undeniable truth that I had possessed Murmur, the protagonist of Leoa, but there was another clear piece of evidence.
When I rubbed my middle finger with my thumb, a status window appeared before my eyes.
─ Zzrrng!
[ 『Murmur』]
[ 【Race: Demon race】]
[ 『Stats』]
[ 【Strength 6, Agility 6, Health 6, Intelligence 10, Wisdom 8, Charm 10】]
[ 『Knowledge』]
[ 【Demon language, Common language】]
The status window, with a UI similar to what I had seen in the game, was proof that I had become the protagonist of Leoa, wasn’t it?
Even the despair-inducing stats were the same. The higher the numbers for Strength and Agility, the better. 10 was the average for a ‘normal person,’ so the lower they were, the more problematic it became.
In the game, the system was designed so that you would receive penalties in various events. It was perhaps natural that Murmur’s Strength and Agility were 6 since she was a ‘5th grader in elementary school.’
“Ugh… They could’ve given me something more generous…”
If I had known I would possess her like this, they should have given me advantages that even beginners could easily exploit… There were tons of them!
There were advantages that allowed you to spend money without running out and advantages that gave you huge benefits in battle, but instead of choosing any of those, I ended up with a bunch of disadvantages. My future was already visible, and my stomach was starting to hurt.
“No, no, I can’t actually get sick…”
I stroked my small belly with my soft hands.
Many beginners who played Leoa thought that because the Demon race had an initial Charm of 10, there would be no penalty to their favorability, but the reality was a little different.
In the world of Leoa, the Demon race was a race that caused problems just by breathing, facing oppression and misunderstandings. To compare it to reality, it was like a black person selling drugs in Harlem, or a Korean-Chinese person carrying a knife.
In this situation, if I were to actually get sick, there was no way a soft 5th grader would receive proper care. I would likely wither away and die, so I absolutely couldn’t get sick.
I couldn’t get help from other demons either. They wouldn’t treat me as one of their own. They would probably just bully me more.
“Still, it would be nice if there was something helpful…”
[ 『Inventory』]
[ 【Old sword】]
[ 【Old bracelet】]
With a hopeful heart, I looked around the status window, but the inventory was exactly as I remembered.
There were no special items under the bed or on the desk. Of course, Murmur was a student at Cosmos Academy, so she had a few old ‘textbooks’ and writing utensils, but it was hard to call those inventory items.
“Ugh…”
Let’s face reality.
I had become Murmur, the demon protagonist of Legend of Academy.
I hadn’t chosen any useful advantages, and I had started as the most hated and despised race in the world. Suffering was my destiny.
“Hoo… Let’s not be anxious. Let’s not be anxious. I know how to get the true ending. I know what happens in this world.”
I held my small body, which was trembling slightly, with both hands and stroked it. It wasn’t enough, so I grabbed the floral blanket and draped it over my shoulders.
“Murmur is a saved child.”
『Advantages』
[Saved Child]
『Disadvantages』
[Affectionate, Genetic defect, Often hungry, Torn pocket]
In the world of Legend of Academy, there exists a ‘Hero.’ They are chosen by a prophecy given to humans and have the power to end the long, tiresome battle between demons and humans and bring about an era of peace.
The ‘Saved Child’ advantage was proof that Murmur had been saved by such a ‘Hero.’That’s why she didn’t have parents, and a background story was added where she spent her childhood at Cosmos Academy.
It unlocked choices that could never be selected when playing a demon normally, and the locked favorability could also be properly increased. There were also events that only occurred when this advantage was selected.
Simply put, the ‘Saved Child’ advantage was a guarantee that if I kept my wits about me, Murmur could reach the true ending of becoming the Hero.
“Of course… that’s only possible if this world is exactly the same as the game…”
Let’s not worry about the unknown.
If it’s different from the game? Then I’ll find a way to live happily in my own way. That’s enough to think about later. There’s no need to get anxious and impatient already.
“The disadvantages are okay too… They’re nothing.”
Affectionate was a disadvantage that put a multiplier on the rate at which favorability increased or decreased. If I could keep choosing the right options, I could even use it as an advantage.
Genetic defect was a pretty serious disadvantage, but it’s okay. There’s an event to remove it.
Often hungry goes without saying. I’ll have to live on scraps, but I can just eat an extra bowl at the cafeteria.
Torn pocket isn’t a problem either. Murmur was poor from the start.
“…It’s not a problem. Then I’ll just make a schedule like I used to play and act accordingly, right?”
When I think about it, there’s nothing to be scared of, right? There’s no way I can’t keep up with 5th-grade elementary school classes. Moreover, since I’m starting in 5th grade, I don’t even have to pass an entrance exam to get into the academy.
I’ll have to take promotion exams later, but I might even be called a genius for being too good at the exams? What if I break the original flow of the game by doing too well on the tests?!
“Let’s stop the fuss here and head to the cafeteria first.”
Leoa was a game where you choose actions and see the results, like Princess Maker.
The difference was that instead of making a monthly schedule in advance, you decided on your actions for the morning, afternoon, and night on the spot.
The reason I was going to the cafeteria was simple.
[ 『Murmur』]
[ 【Stamina 100, Mana 100, Hunger 50, Stress 0】]
You could solve your hunger in the cafeteria, and there was a chance of events occurring, allowing you to meet characters and increase or decrease their favorability.
It was even a sweet spot where your stress wouldn’t increase if you reached 100 and collapsed!
Moreover, if Murmur was to overcome the many hardships and trials she would face in the future, she would need the help of her ‘friends.’
Even if an event was a death event, depending on how much you had increased a character’s favorability and what events you had seen, it could even turn into an event where you gained stats or skills.
I remembered all the conditions for those events. What’s there to be scared of? It’s a game I used to play every time the cooldown was over!
“Then let’s go!”
Nothing will happen if I just stay still and wait for characters to come and increase their favorability.
Precious time will just pass by, right? I threw the blanket on the bed, walked up to the tightly closed door, and turned the handle.
“Hwaaam… Sleepy…”
“Wanna go to the shopping district? They have the prettiest doll this time!”
“I didn’t do my homework today, is it okay?”
“Is it okay! You idiot!”
The dormitory hallway of ‘Cosmos Academy,’ which I had only seen in one picture, was strangely huge and bustling.
It’s natural that seeing it in person is different from seeing it in a game, but the feeling was so different.
“What’s… she doing?”
“Why is she opening the door like that?”
“Isn’t she getting scolded by Professor Malea?”
What, even if I’m a demon, I can open the door and go out into the hallway, right?
“Why is she wearing pajamas like that?”
“Ugh… !?”
Who in this world wouldn’t find it strange to see a demon in pink pajamas hesitating about whether to go out into the hallway?!
My face got so hot that I couldn’t leave my room for a long time.
* * *
The Cosmos Academy uniform was easier to put on than I thought.
I mean, I’m not really a baby, am I? How could I not be able to put on a blouse with a skirt and button up a jacket?
Since I’m a kid, I don’t need to wear a bra either. It’s so comfortable.
“Ah!! Seriously! I told you I don’t want to eat bell peppers!”
“Why! You said you could eat them all last time!”
“Ugh… this is too much…”
Anyway, the academy cafeteria was quite noisy. It was no wonder that it was noisy, with kids gathered around tables with fancy tablecloths, eating and chatting.
Naturally, Cosmos Academy had separate buildings for elementary to high school students, so the elementary school cafeteria was only filled with elementary school students.
In this situation where there were so many kids of similar age, no one came to the table where I, Murmur, was sitting.
I had thought this would happen from the moment I grabbed the plate with both hands at this buffet-style cafeteria, but it felt a little strange that no one was coming so openly.
“Ew… I don’t like it! I won’t eat it!”
“You must eat it.”
“Can’t I leave just this one time?”
“You said that last time too? At least try the roasted vegetables.”
Next to the students sitting in the cafeteria were maids helping them with their meals.
They weren’t maids assigned by the academy, but maids brought from their respective ‘families.’ The parents, who were the employers of these maids, obviously wouldn’t want their children to be picky eaters.
In that sense, there was really no one next to me, Murmur.
“Munch munch…”
I had no friends, and no maid to ask for help. Because I was a demon, the other kids, who were pure, kept glancing at me like I was a monkey in a zoo.
It was a situation where my stress was steadily rising, but I, who was an adult on the inside even if I was a child on the outside, wasn’t uncomfortable or displeased. Rather, it would have hurt even more if a maid had stuck to my side and said, “Please eat your bell peppers, Murmur!”
“Nom nom… nom… It looks like kimchi, but it tastes weird.”
The food served in the cafeteria was delicious, enough for me to talk to myself leisurely. And…
“I apologize. It seems there are no other seats available.”
“Would you prefer to dine in your room?”
The other reason I had come to the cafeteria was naturally starting to unfold.
“Meals should be eaten in the cafeteria, shouldn’t they? Let’s eat here.”
Long silver hair that shimmered like silk, a face like a sculpture exuding nobility and elegance, a body that was so well-developed that you would believe she was a first-year middle school student rather than a fifth-grader, and three maids standing behind her.
There was only one character that all of this pointed to.
“Y-Your Highness… even so, it’s not right for you to sit with a demon…”
“I will be sure to arrange a seat next time. I apologize, Your Highness.”
“Tsk… if she has any sense, she’d get up…”
The character who would surely take first place in a popularity poll in Leoa, ‘Nikea Hollimpia.’
