Chapter 27: Chapter 27: The Madness Before Crossing Over
Soon, the call connected. As the other side picked up, the software on Fang Yuan's end automatically terminated the connection, implanting the virus into the target's phone.
Hundreds of miles away, in a run-down rental unit in a small city...
A young man stared blankly at the screen of his phone, where a dialog box popped up:
"Do you want to travel through? Here's your chance. Think carefully—once you cross, there's no turning back!"
"What is this? A virus?"
Tan Wei frowned and immediately chose "No," then launched an antivirus scan.
"He rejected it?" Fang Yuan was dumbfounded. "Isn't Tan Wei disappointed with his life? How could he refuse the opportunity to travel through?"
"Or maybe he thought it was a hoax?"
Feeling annoyed, Fang Yuan decided to try again. He activated the virus, prompting the dialog box to reappear.
In the rental room, Tan Wei, still busy with the antivirus scan, frowned as the dialog box popped up again. Without hesitation, he clicked "No" once more.
"What the hell? Who keeps rejecting so decisively? Has modern society traumatized young people to the point where they distrust everything?" Fang Yuan muttered angrily.
Determined, Fang Yuan reactivated the virus but rewrote the message this time:
"This is no joke. You can really travel through! Aren't you disappointed with reality? In another world, you'll find a new life."
"Damn it! What kind of virus is this? Will it ever stop?" Tan Wei cursed, slamming his phone on the table.
He clicked "No" again, resuming the scan.
Almost immediately, the dialog box popped up again:
"Why don't you believe me? This is real. You'll travel to a primitive world. With your education, you could thrive there and never be looked down upon by a girlfriend again."
This time, Tan Wei froze, startled.
"How does this virus know I've been rejected by a girlfriend?"
Now suspicious, Tan Wei clicked "No" once more.
The next prompt wasn't text but an eerie, sharp electronic voice:
"Are you crossing or not? This is your last chance!"
"Ahhh! Ghosts!" Tan Wei screamed, tossing his phone aside in terror.
"Damn it! I'm the master of a world, and yet no one believes me! This is infuriating!" Fang Yuan muttered, frustrated.
Although he had decided to give each person only one chance, this failure left him in a foul mood—mainly because others doubted the authenticity of the opportunity he offered.
Still, to his surprise, Tan Wei didn't immediately reject the dialog box this time.
Shaken, Tan Wei cautiously retrieved his phone, staring at the dialog box.
"Is this some automated software, or is someone pranking me? Or… is traveling through actually real?"
Initially skeptical, he couldn't help but feel a glimmer of hope.
"And if it's a prank, why go to such lengths? My phone isn't worth much, and whoever wrote this undetectable virus wouldn't target someone as broke as me, right?"
A thought struck him:
"If I could travel to another world, maybe I really could start anew. No one would look down on me anymore, and who knows—I might even get a cheat-like ability!"
After deliberating for what felt like forever, Tan Wei finally clicked "Yes." However, when nothing happened, he smiled bitterly.
"I must be crazy to believe in something like this."
Then another dialog box appeared:
"You'll be grateful for your decision. Keep your phone with you. Tomorrow night at this time, you'll cross over. Tan Wei, enjoy your last day on Earth!"
"What the…?" Tan Wei nearly dropped his phone again. "How does it know my name?"
"He finally said yes!" Fang Yuan exhaled in relief and eagerly checked Tan Wei's location.
He had written a program to track the phone's signal, pinpointing Tan Wei's whereabouts. Without delay, Fang Yuan checked out of his hotel, hired a car, and set off for the distant city where Tan Wei lived.
Meanwhile, Tan Wei lay in his room, unable to sleep.
"Travel through… Is it real?"
Tan Wei felt a mix of anticipation and dread. What if it was a trap? What if someone found him through his phone and tried to kill him?
Troubled by these thoughts, he eventually got out of bed, dressed, grabbed his phone, and armed himself with a knife before leaving his apartment.
Tan Wei lived in a small city called Shasha. By the time Fang Yuan arrived the next afternoon, it took him another three hours of signal tracking to locate Tan Wei.
When he finally found him, Fang Yuan was baffled.
"Why did this guy go to the police station?"
Outside the station, Fang Yuan extended his consciousness, scanning the area until he found Tan Wei in an interrogation room. His phone had been confiscated, but luckily it was close enough for Fang Yuan to detect it.
Inside, two officers were questioning Tan Wei while taking notes. Fang Yuan listened in and was stunned.
It turned out that Tan Wei had killed three people within a day—all men who had stolen his ex-girlfriend.
For the last victim, Tan Wei had stabbed the man to death right in front of his ex.
"Why did you kill them? Just because they took your girlfriend?" one of the officers asked, expressionless.
After hesitating, Tan Wei realized he had nothing to lose. "Someone told me I could travel to another world. I only have one day left on Earth."
The two officers exchanged a look.
One of them took a deep breath and asked, "So, just because someone told you this, you decided to kill people?"
"They deserved it!" Tan Wei's face twisted with rage. "They bullied and humiliated me, and they stole the woman I loved!"
Calming down slightly, Tan Wei began to regret his actions. "What was I thinking last night, believing in something so absurd?"
"Relax, calm down," the officer said, trying to pacify him. "Now, who told you about this other world?"
"Someone sent messages to my phone. It might've been a virus, but I couldn't find it. Even my antivirus software didn't work," Tan Wei replied.
Thinking back, even he found the whole thing ridiculous.
The two officers exchanged glances again before making a call to have Tan Wei's phone analyzed.
"Cough, cough…" Fang Yuan, outside the police station, cleared his throat awkwardly. This was getting complicated.
