Chapter 21: Noldrei: Girl, Go Be a Hero
Coco-Lia felt like her entire life was a tragedy.
She never imagined she would be confined to a backyard in the form of a horse, unable to even run away, speak, draw, or write.
But her thoughts hadn't stopped. She even knew that the two ponies next to her were Raiden Mei and Bronya.
But so what?
She couldn't leave the yard because the other person didn't see her as a fellow being capable of speech.
She wasn't even considered a person.
It was like how she wouldn't have the patience to teach a primitive how to make fire if she traveled to ancient times. The other person seemed too lazy to teach her, or even look at her.
Coco-Lia-Applejack raised her head, wanting to see the moon in the sky.
Unfortunately, her current horse body wasn't that useful. She could barely catch a glimpse of moonlight on the yard wall, and that was the best she could do.
"The weakness of the people of this era is engraved in their souls, just like how you only dare to hide and secretly do those weird Honkai energy experiments. That place is equipment for amplifying local Honkai energy, right?"
"Why make things so complicated when you could just do it all out in the open?"
Noldrei knew that the humans of this era didn't have enough basic biotechnology, so they were particularly protective of so-called "human rights" and "humanity."
Kiana was eating a bowl of ramen next to him, learning about the evils of the future. She had no desire to learn how strong and determined future humans were, as Noldrei described them.
She ate while slurping her noodles, and asked curiously, "What do you mean by 'do it out in the open'? Does that mean they do human experiments openly in the future?"
"Don't you know? If I remember history correctly, about sixty or seventy years from now, there will be a brutal nuclear war within humanity. After that, all kinds of viruses and bacteria will undergo unprecedented mutations. Compared to complex life forms like humans, viruses and bacteria mutate more easily and quickly, and their evolution far surpasses human imagination."
"Ah...? Huh?!"
Kiana's chopsticks fell to the ground, her mouth slightly open, her face blank.
She remained blank for a long time, then finally picked up her chopsticks, slurped a couple of noodles, and continued eating.
Anyway, her current body wasn't afraid of any bacteria or viruses, so she just needed to eat.
"Wait! Now's not the time to eat! Nuclear war?!"
Kiana finally reacted, throwing away the remaining half of her bowl of noodles. She grabbed Noldrei's shoulders anxiously and asked, "When? When? Why?! Why would there be a nuclear war?! It doesn't make any sense! How did it become like this in just a few decades? Doesn't that mean the world will end after I get old?"
She completely forgot that she couldn't get old anymore.
"That's how it is. Do you think that's why later humans dared to experiment openly? Their own physical limits had completely bottomed out and rebounded. Anything left was considered progress, so I don't think there's any need for you to do any Honkai energy human experiments..."
Noldrei calmly said, "In a few decades, you can all experiment openly, why hide?"
"Instead of dying as ugly, irradiated messes, it's better for me to take back their reproductive rights early. At least they won't regret letting their children live in that era during the war."
Kiana couldn't accept that idea. She asked in a panic, "Isn't there any way to stop it?! Don't give up so easily! As a future person, it should be easy for you to stop a nuclear war, right?"
Noldrei didn't care about the lives of humans. He lazily refused, "I don't want to. It's the choice of the humans of this era. I respect their choice, it's their right."
"What the heck are you talking about 'human rights' at a time like this?! I'll help you become emperor, I'll catch as many wives as you want! If that doesn't work, I'll turn into a pony for you too. Just think of a way to stop the nuclear war!"
Kiana even threw away her own principles. She didn't want to live in a world of radiation in the future.
'Don't change your bottom line so easily! At least have a little bit of the spirit of modern democracy and republic!' *3
The three ponies in the yard didn't understand what these two were thinking, why they had suddenly accepted the option of becoming emperor.
'At least let us horses say something to represent humanity...'
Raiden Mei thought it was hilarious. The future person came to the past and easily decided the future of the current humans, but never considered their thoughts.
It reminded her of her life at school, where the teachers seemed to teach in such a "calm" way.
"What are you thinking? How can humans who haven't experienced the cruel pain of history face an even crueler future? If I really saved them, they would just worship a new god from the future."
"Besides, I'm not the one pushing the button, so it's useless to talk to me."
Kiana didn't believe that so many people would give up their good lives and start a nuclear war. She retorted, "It must be a war started by conspirators. How can you just sit back and watch when you know about it? Besides, since you're changing the future anyway, what's the harm in saving them? Isn't that why you came here, to change the future?"
Noldrei pushed her hand away and explained, "History doesn't say who pushed the button first. It only says that on that day, all the nuclear missiles flew into the sky. Even if you asked me to find the culprit, I wouldn't be able to find out who it was."
"Does your history book say who made the first iron weapon and then used it to kill someone? No, and the same goes for our future historical documents."
"All we can do is prepare for it in advance. Then find enough test subjects so I can reproduce the genetic medicine that should exist in the future."
"But what's the point of what I'm doing?"
Noldrei looked at her, knowing that even if she had obtained the body of a future person, her current stance was still that of a present-day human. She would reject any change that brought disaster.
And change would definitely bring disaster, just like now.
"As long as this era is like this, there will definitely be someone who pushes the button. Someone will involuntarily want to destroy this society that brings pain to humanity."
Noldrei thought that it was fortunate that the ruling class of this era wasn't that stupid yet, but they would soon be stupid enough for their own benefit.
They would even think they were pretending to be stupid and could control the development of the situation.
"Kiana, I won't change this society. In fact, its destruction is in line with my future interests. This way, I can complete my control over human society according to my original plan."
Noldrei looked at his slightly naive "counterpart."
Rarely, he laughed.
"How about you try to see how much you can change this world?"
