Chapter 32: Ch-32:Fulfilling the promise
Under the joint comfort of Naruto and Sarutobi Hiruzen, Kushina's mood gradually stabilized. Soon after, her chakra depleted, and her presence dissipated into the air, leaving the Hokage office in silence.
Sarutobi Hiruzen quietly picked up his cigarette pipe from the floor, slowly fidgeting with it. Outside the window, birds chirped peacefully, seemingly reflecting the harmony of the village. But beneath this tranquility, the sacrifices of a few were what truly held the village together.
After a long pause, Sarutobi Hiruzen spoke, breaking the silence. "Little Naruto, I'll do my best to clear the villagers' misconceptions about you, but it will take time..."
It was much easier to spread a rumor than to dispel one. Danzo had spread rumors that equated Naruto with the Nine Tails demon fox. With just a few words, the entire village had been swayed overnight. For Sarutobi Hiruzen, however, it would require ten or even twenty times that effort to set things right.
But Naruto didn't seem overly concerned. He responded calmly, "As I said, I'm living fine. Third Hokage-sama, you should focus on your duties."
Since recovering his memories, Naruto's perspective on the village had shifted. The ideals of the Will of Fire, once so deeply ingrained in him, now felt like a political tool. While he still valued the people he cared for in the village, the village itself no longer held the same importance.
Sarutobi Hiruzen, with all his years of experience as Hokage, could read between the lines. He heard the subtle distance in Naruto's words, a detachment that saddened him. He wanted to implore Naruto to love the village, just as his parents had, but he found himself at a loss for words as he watched Naruto leave.
Once Naruto had gone, Iruka stormed into the office, visibly upset. "Hokage-sama! Why would someone attack Naruto?"
Sarutobi Hiruzen's heart sank. His first thought was Danzo—again.
---
From that day on, Sarutobi Hiruzen seemed to let go of his constant worrying over Naruto. Or at least, Naruto didn't notice any changes in the treatment he received. However, the Anbu who had been discreetly watching Naruto from the shadows had now moved into the open. Of course, rather than calling it "surveillance," the term "protection" was used, in line with Konoha's principles.
Naruto didn't mind their presence, viewing it instead as having a group of free nannies.
As time passed, Naruto's growth became increasingly apparent. His immense potential, born from the fusion of the Senju and Uzumaki bloodlines, was becoming ever more evident. By the time he approached graduation, Naruto had even managed to lift Kurama's seal again. His chakra had grown so vast by this point that Kurama, still inside him, could be suppressed with relative ease.
Over the next two years, Naruto's strength grew at an alarming rate, even though the system hadn't issued any new tasks or provided new abilities.
Now, on the eve of his graduation exam, Naruto stood in front of a mirror in his apartment. His reflection showed a more mature version of himself compared to two years ago, though only slightly. With his father's sharp looks, Naruto was undeniably handsome, much more so than in the original timeline. After all, he was the child of two attractive parents—Minato and Kushina. His appearance was naturally good, but in the original story, Naruto never dressed up, giving him a more goofy, carefree appearance.
Today, though, he wore a white windbreaker, his striking looks making him arguably the most handsome boy in the village.
Reflecting on an incident two years ago, when Cloud Shinobi had attempted to kidnap Hinata, Naruto had intercepted the abduction, forcing Cloud Shinobi into a retreat. Following their failed mission, Sarutobi Hiruzen had executed several of the emissaries responsible for the plot, leaving the surviving members to return to Raikage with the news. Ever since, Raikage had made no further moves against Konoha, unwilling to provoke further conflict.
With that matter now settled in Naruto's mind, he finished adjusting his windbreaker and left the apartment. As he exited the building, a female Anbu with purple hair—Yugao Uzuki—spotted him and asked, "Naruto, where are you going?"
"To the training ground," Naruto replied casually.
She didn't press him for details but immediately called for her teammates to follow. Since the attack on Naruto by Danzo's root operatives, Anbu's protection had grown exceedingly intense.
Naruto made his way to the nearest training ground, selecting a secluded spot for himself. Surveying the area, he spoke softly, "Kurama, today's the day I grant you your freedom."
Kurama's voice resonated within his mind, filled with approval. "I knew you were the right person."
Naruto wasted no time, opening his windbreaker and dispelling the intricate seal on his abdomen. As soon as Kurama sensed the outside world, it eagerly began extending its chakra beyond Naruto's body.
Immediately, Anbu agents appeared, surrounding Naruto. One of them, a white-haired Anbu captain, shouted, "Sealing team, prepare!"
But Naruto remained calm, turning to them with a simple explanation. "Don't come any closer. I'm the one who opened the seal."
"What?!" The white-haired captain was stunned. He hadn't anticipated that the release of the Nine Tails' chakra was intentional. Was Naruto suffering some kind of psychological breakdown?
But that didn't make sense either—Naruto seemed perfectly fine. He was popular at the ninja academy, constantly surrounded by classmates like Hinata. His life seemed carefree. What could have driven him to such a decision?
Seeing the sealing team closing in, Naruto warned them again, "I told you not to come any closer."
The Anbu, wary and confused, held their positions. Kurama's chakra continued to pour out of Naruto's body, its form beginning to materialize in front of them. The ground trembled as the immense power of the Nine Tails took shape.
By the time Sarutobi Hiruzen arrived, Kurama had fully emerged, a massive presence that loomed over the training ground. The Nine Tails was free.
"ROAR!!!" Kurama's deafening cry echoed throughout Konoha, causing the entire village to shudder.
Sarutobi Hiruzen stood firm, addressing Naruto with a grave expression. "Little Naruto, are you sure about this? Do you really want to release the Nine Tails?"
He was aware of the deal Naruto had made with Kurama—the Nine Tails had helped Naruto locate Hinata during the abduction, and in return, Naruto had promised to release it. Hiruzen had assumed this was just talk, never imagining Naruto would actually go through with it.
Yet here he was, watching as the tailed beast stood before him, fully formed. Naruto, though sweating from the effort, remained calm. "Yes, of course," he replied firmly.
Kurama roared once more in excitement, reveling in its newfound freedom. But Naruto shook his head slightly, cutting off the beast's celebration. "Kurama, no need for all the noise. You're free now—leave."
The Nine Tails, however, squatted down, gazing at Naruto with a glint of curiosity in its eyes. "Naruto, do you know why Senju Hashirama originally divided and assigned the tailed beasts?"
