Chapter 11: Public Scandal
His hands began to tremble as he read the headlines: "Noran Kingston and Sophia Carter Are Back Together," "Wife of Noran Kingston Hurt Sophia Carter Out of Jealousy," and "The Ugly Truth Behind Noran Kingston's Marriage."
Scrolling down the various articles, he nearly lost his mind when he stumbled upon a video of reporters swarming Shuri, who looked stunned.
They bombarded her with intrusive questions.
"Is it true that Mr. Noran has gotten back with Miss Carter?"
"Did you really hurt Miss Carter because of this?"
"We heard you were the affair in their previous relationship. Miss Shuri, did you break Mr. Noran and Miss Carter up back then?"
At the time, it was widely known that the Kingstons and the Carters had arranged for Noran and Sophia to get engaged. No one had expected Noran to break the engagement by leaving the country. Now, rumors circulated that Shuri was the one who initiated his departure.
"These bastards…" Noran gritted his teeth in frustration.
He had always been protective of his wife, and he only moved back to the city to give her a better life. Even after making a name for himself as an architect, he kept his marital status secret, not wanting to draw unnecessary attention to her.
Yet, here they were, ganging up and pressurizing her under someone's order, and he knew exactly who that mastermind was.
"Damn it!" Noran cursed, realizing he had been careless.
He hurried out of his office, intending to leave work immediately and fly back to New Valley. Those he passed by could sense the intensity of his fury, which was so strong that they wouldn't have been surprised if he were on his way to commit murder. Therefore, no one dared to approach him.
Noran had his eyes on his phone screen the entire time. His emotions fluctuated between anger and heartache. He noticed Shuri's pale complexion and she appeared like she could faint at any moment due to the pressure from the reporters.
How he wished he could enter the screen right now to wrap her in his arms and drive those bastards away.
However, to his surprise, Shuri did not back down. She even wore her usual gentle smile as she replied, "My husband has always been faithful to me. There has never been a third party in our relationship. Please refrain from making such false allegations."
The reporters were taken aback by her unexpected response. "But we received photos of Mr. Noran and Miss Carter in bed…"
"Where's the source of the photos?" Shuri did not hesitate to interject. "How can you be so sure that those photos aren't fabricated, especially with AI and deepfake technology becoming so advanced?"
Shuri continued with a calm smile. "You shouldn't question my trust for my husband because I know him better than anyone else, but as reporters, you should question the credibility of your source."
Not only were the reporters at the loss of words, Noran couldn't believe his ears.
He felt a lump forming in his throat upon realizing that his wife never once doubted him.
Despite being shown evidence of his possible infidelity, she still trusted him completely, never once questioning him.
Once more, she made him feel incredibly fortunate to have her as his wife.
"I'm sorry, Rin…" Noran muttered apologetically as he touched the screen with her face on it.
The video kept playing, revealing the reporters' determination to press on. They were sent here on a mission, and they couldn't just go back without getting the reaction they wanted.
However, they were interrupted by Karlene, who appeared out of nowhere and knocked back the cameras.
"Fuck off! I will beat the crap out of all of you if you dare bother my sister!"
Her loud, fiery voice was the last thing he heard before the video was cut off.
Noran closed the browser on his phone and was about to call Shuri when he received a call.
It was from Roy.
Realizing he would need Roy's help, Noran quickly picked up the call.
"Noran, what the hell is happening?! How the fuck did you get yourself involved with Sophia?!"
Roy was practically screaming at the other end of the phone.
It was unlike Roy, someone who was usually nonchalant, to be venting his anger like that. The two women lying nude in bed with Roy fell silent. They stared at him in shock, clutching the blanket tightly.
Despite being the vice-director of the Lloyd Media Group, Roy was one of the most famous playboys in the city, who often neglected work and slept around with beautiful women.
He woke up late that day after having fun the whole night with the two beaus on his bed and was shocked to receive such news as soon as he woke up.
"I didn't sleep with her. She drugged me…" came the reply from Noran, his voice solemn.
Roy ruffled his hair in frustration. "Didn't I warn you to be careful of her? She ain't simple… Oh gosh, what's your plan?"
"I'm returning to New Valley now. I can't leave my Rin to handle all this by herself," Noran replied as he got into a cab.
"So, you don't have a concrete plan?" Roy sighed as he got up from the bed. "Tell you what. Go declare to the public that the photos are fabricated, just like what your wife said, and I'll have my operation department handle the rest. I'll make sure everyone in the city will believe you've been framed by the end of today."
"…You're helping me?" Noran knew Roy had no reason to help him, given his family relationship with the Carters.
Why would he risk getting involved and potentially jeopardize his family relationship with the Carters over this messy scandal?
"Hey, do you think so little of me? Do you think I'm the kind who would abandon my closest friend in times of need?" Roy retorted, sounding displeased. "Besides, it's not just because of you..."
"I'm not sharing my Rin with anyone," Noran replied sternly, quickly jumping to a conclusion.
"…" Roy was speechless for a second before shouting back, "Fuck! I'm not interested in your wife!"
He sighed in defeat before grabbing his clothes to put them on.
"Forget it. Just do as I said. I'll see what else I can do at my end."
"Alright, thank you." Noran ended the call with sincere gratitude.
As soon as Roy put down his phone, he took out two written cheques from his bag and placed them on the table. "Take this, and don't come looking for me again."
Without turning back to look at the women in bed, he simply left the hotel room.
