Chapter 4: Placement Test
Kai was falling, the darkness around him swallowing everything, but as he fell, something within him seemed to take control.
His muscles tensed, his mind cleared, and with an instinct he couldn't quite explain, he corrected his position in mid-air.
Instead of crashing to the ground on his back, his landing was soft and controlled.
His feet hit the floor with barely a sound, and as the rest of the students landed around him, a ripple of air filled the chamber.
It was as if an unseen force had guided them all down safely.
Probably one of the academy's professors using an Air spell to make sure they didn't die just by landing.
Looking around, Kai saw the others slowly getting to their feet, some visibly shaken while others seemed to take the whole situation in stride.
They all looked up to see Headmaster Kairos floating above them, a figure draped in dark robes that seemed to shift with the air itself.
How was he doing that? He didn't have an Air affinity.
"This is your placement test." His voice boomed through the chamber. "You have eight hours to find your way out. The only rule? Don't die."
With a wave of his hand, the ceiling, which had once been the floor for them, rippled, sealing them inside.
The floor now stretched above them, solid and firm.
WHOOMPH!
Sconces along the walls ignited, their light illuminating the once dark hall.
The students stood in silence, some whispering in excitement, others muttering nervously.
Kai could feel a buzz of energy in the room, the anticipation thick enough to be almost tangible.
Beside him, Arlo let out a lazy yawn, completely unbothered by what had just happened.
"Well, this is... something." He said, lounging back on the ground as he stretched out his arms. "So, what's the plan, Kai?"
Kai, watching the students around them, considered their options.
His eyes scanned the crowd, mentally categorizing the people based on his instincts.
Some were already gathering into groups, but Kai wasn't here to join a random clique. No, he had a different plan in mind.
"Any preferences?" Kai asked, turning to Arlo. "Where do you want to be placed?"
Arlo shrugged nonchalantly. "I don't really care. As long as I don't have to work too hard."
Kai chuckled. "Fair enough."
As he surveyed the room, he realized that scattered around them were different weapons.
This could only mean one thing. They may have to face monsters. Why else would there be weapons?
Bending down, he selected a sword. From what he could recall, the original Kai had been trained almost religiously and as a result, was a master swordmaster.
Judging by what had happened as he fell, he could tell that not only did he retain kai's memories but also his skills and instincts.
With the sword, he should be fine. As long as they didn't have to face a direwolf or any monster on that level.
"There are weapons here. Which one do you want?" He asked Arlo.
"None. I don't really use weapons." Arlo said, dipping his hand into his pockets and retrieving a roll of bandages.
"This is all I need." He grinned as he began rolling them around his arms. "I wanted to do this before but I was late for orientation."
Kai nodded in understanding. Leaving Arlo to his tying, he began studying the group of students.
That was when his eyes locked on a trio of girls standing near the far corner.
One of them was the redhead who had caught his attention earlier during the orientation, and now, she was with two other girls who were equally… well endowed.
That, for him, was the most important criteria in a partner for this test.
"Here's the plan." Kai said with a mischievous grin. "We find the hottest girls in the room and stick with them. They'll make good allies."
Arlo looked over at the girls Kai had his eye on, then back at him with a grin of his own. "I like the sound of that."
They walked toward the group, Kai's confidence radiating as he approached them. Arlo trailed behind, hands in his pockets, looking more amused than anything else.
"Ladies." Kai began, using this body's natural charm. "Need some help?"
The redhead, who appeared to be the leader of the group, gave them a skeptical look. "And why would we need help from two random guys?" She asked, crossing her arms over her impressive chest.
Kai forced himself not to glance down at it as he put on his best, most sincere smile. "Because I'm a man of honor."
"I can't just leave a lady in distress. It would be against the knightly code of chivalry."
Arlo raised an eyebrow at him, but Kai just covertly winked at him. He wasn't sure if it would work but if this world was the same as earth, the ladies would definitely be intrigued to receive the gentleman treatment.
As expected, the girl raised an eyebrow, hiding an interested expression.
"Chivalry?" She scoffed skeptically. "You're not exactly a knight."
"Not yet." Kai said with a grin, his eyes flicking over to her companions. "But I plan to be one."
The girl seemed to soften slightly. She eyed him up and down, then nodded.
"Fine, you can help." She said with a slight grin. "But we're not some damsels in need of rescuing. We know how to handle ourselves."
Kai smiled, extending his hand. "I wouldn't have it any other way."
"I'm Phoebe Aldron, daughter of Lord Aldron and these are my friends, Serafina and Miria Darklyn, daughters of Earl Darklyn."
Kai nodded, bowing slightly. The daughter of a lord and two minor nobles.
"Pleasure to meet you. I'm Kai Velroth, heir to Lord Velroth."
The mention of his name seemed to stir something in the girls, and they gave him a more appraising look.
"Velroth, huh?" Phoebe chuckled. "You're the son of one of the high lords."
Kai chuckled. "That's what they tell me."
"Well, we could use someone with connections." Phoebe said with a smile. "Welcome to the team, Kai."
Kai grinned. "I'm looking forward to working with you."
Arlo, who had been standing quietly by, now gave a lazy wave. "I'm Arlo. Nice to meet you."
"Not much for words, huh?" Seraphina said with a teasing smile.
"Nope." Arlo replied, leaning back against the wall. "Just here to have some fun."
