Chapter 42: Echoes of the Past
After the teachers left, Evan, Hermione, Colin, and Ginny hurried to the infirmary to see Ron.
Ron apologized to Evan and told him that he didn't remember anything.
Madam Pomfrey did not allow them to stay long; according to her, Ron needed rest. The impact of the Imperius Curse on the soul is not easy to recover from; poor Ron will probably need to spend the next Christmas in bed.
Evan was surprised; he thought they would discover more.
Evan wanted to tell Dumbledore about Tom Riddle and the diary, but in the end, he said nothing. He didn't know how he could explain what he knew about Voldemort and the Horcruxes. This information is confidential, and so far, even Dumbledore is only making guesses.
The situation is becoming more and more complicated, so Evan had to act on his own.
It wasn't Ron who opened the Chamber of Secrets. Controlling a wizard with weak will is quite easy, and anyone under Tom's control can use the Imperius Curse on Ron. Ron had contact with many people; Evan can't investigate them one by one.
So, he was back to square one.
Ron, under the Imperius Curse, used a corrosive curse and the killing spell, which means that Tom has become suspicious of him and wants to get rid of him. Evan directed his suspicions towards everyone around him, but almost everyone was suspicious.
In the following days, the school increased its surveillance; the teachers often patrolled the corridors and escorted the students.
The heir of Slytherin was bad enough, but now there is also the Imperius Curse.
The young wizards were unaware of the truth; they were discussing Ron's disappearance. People kept peeking into the infirmary to see if he had been attacked; Madam Pomfrey had to put up a curtain around the bed.
Professor McGonagall announced that Ron's wand had turned against him and he had been hit by a very serious curse, but no one believed her.
People agreed that Ron had been attacked; rumors spread throughout the school, and the young wizards were talking about who the heir of Slytherin was.
People were certain that Harry was the heir, especially after he revealed that he was a Parselmouth in the dueling club. Harry felt terrible; he wanted to talk to Justin about what happened, but he was avoiding him.
On Friday afternoon, Evan and Hermione were in the library preparing the next issue of Magical Hogwarts when they saw several Hufflepuff students whispering about something.
Evan and Hermione glanced at each other and approached stealthily.
"Anyway, I told Justin to hide in his room and not let Potter find him," said a burly boy, "I mean, if Potter is after him, he'd better hide for a while."
"But why...?"
"Since Justin accidentally told Harry he is Muggle-born, it's very likely that Harry will go after him," said a boy.
"Yes!" some Hufflepuff students nodded, "but Ernie, are you sure he's a Slytherin descendant?"
"You still don't get it; he's a Parselmouth, and everyone knows it's the mark of a dark wizard. Have you ever heard of a good wizard who can speak to snakes?"
"But he seems friendly, not like a dark wizard," said a golden-haired girl.
"Hannah!" Ernie said seriously, "he can speak the language of snakes, and every time there's an attack, he's the first one to show up at the scene."
Upon hearing this, they began whispering.
"Do you still remember the words written on the wall?" Ernie said, "The cat didn't let Potter into the girls' bathroom on the third floor."
"Penny had encountered Potter outside the restroom..."
"But why does Potter have to go to a ladies' lavatory?"
"Who knows, perhaps he's practicing dark magic in there, or the entrance to the Chamber of Secrets is there," Ernie remarked.
Evan had been eavesdropping and was left in shock. Who would have thought that Ernie's nonsense was actually correct?
"How dare you, Ernie, that doesn't make sense," Hannah hesitated. "Aside from Potter, Granger, and Evan could fit as well, but they can't be descendants of Slytherin since their parents are muggles."
Upon hearing Hannah's words, several girls nodded hastily.
"They are Potter's accomplices!" Ernie exclaimed. "Evan is not a typical first-year student; I would even say none of the first-years can compete with him, given that he even has a newspaper and his curses!"
"But I think he's handsome..."
"Don't be deceived by his appearance, Hannah," Ernie whispered lowering his voice as the Hufflepuffs drew closer, "Look at Ron, who was recently attacked, he tried to stop them before, but he was attacked."
"But Professor McGonagall said it was because of his wand."
"A wand turning against you wouldn't leave people in bed. And also, think about how Harry defeated the one who must not be named."
He whispered in a barely audible voice.
"No one knows how he survived when he was attacked. Everyone has seen Evan's article; he should have died, so only truly powerful dark wizards can escape that spell. Probably why the one who must not be named attempted to kill him."
"Now only Hufflepuff remains, and I dare say the next attack..."
Hermione couldn't bear it any longer; she emerged from behind the bookshelf, and Evan quickly followed her. The scene that followed was comical. He witnessed every Hufflepuff becoming frightened, and Ernie's face darkening.
"You, you overheard us," Ernie hurriedly said, "I might as well tell you that if you trace back nine generations, you'll see that my lineage is as pure as anyone's, so..."
"Enough!" Hermione interjected with disdain as she walked away.
"I don't care what kind of ancestry you have!" Evan stated as he leaned in, narrowing his eyes at Ernie, "Listen, if you continue spreading this rumor in public, even if I'm not the heir of Slytherin, I can make you resemble Filch's cat."
Upon hearing those words from Evan, Ernie was completely terrified.
