Chapter 12: Crashing and Burning
Sonic and Mothra Leo raced laps around the perimeter of Angel's Skull Island, looking for dangerous kaiju… and also a challenge. Sonic quickly left the Mothra in the dust, leaving behind a blue light trail. Jumping over spike traps and quickly side-stepping away from oversized venus flytraps trying to eat him whole, he escaped the thick jungle and ran up the side of an icy mountain.
Sonic looked to the slippery stone wall he was running up, and saw big mole hills cracking the rock. Out of them leapt humongous Ice Borers! Looking down at Mothra struggling to fly out of the way of the falling Ice Borers, Sonic back-flipped off the wall and initiated a new attack he had been working on. The Flying Kick! In a split second, a series of Sonic's afterimages appeared punting the Ice Borers out of Mothra's way by the soles of his boots. Sonic then hopped off one of them before they could go flying and leapt towards the peak of the mountain alongside Mothra. Sonic struck a cool pose while Spin Jumping, pointing at Mothra with both hands as a star twinkled brightly behind him… Before he began to fall back down. Mothra dove after Sonic, and gently caught him between her talons, singing a snarky song. They arrived back in the plains, and resumed the race.
It was neck and neck, anybody's victory. The fastest thing on land VS the swiftest in the air. Tails turned around slowly, holding his thumb over a button on his Miles Electric gizmo. At the last opportunity he had, Sonic Drop Dashed ahead of Mothra right beside Tails, and…
"Goooooooo—" Tails droned, his voice coming out deep and sluggish. Sonic braked, and as he came to a complete stop, Mothra flew over the frozen Tails. The opponents seemed confused, jogging back over to their two-tailed friend. Sonic waved a hand in front of the fox's eyes. "---ooaaal???" Tails exclaimed, clicking the button. The pitch and speed returning to his voice as the flow of time unpaused. Tails looked at the timer on the Miles Electric, and raised an eyebrow. "Uhm… you guys were supposed to keep going." The Miles Electric was almost blown out of his hand by a delayed gust of wind. "Whoaaaa! The… the results are indecisiiiiive!" The fox had to propel himself backwards with his tails to stay on his feet. When the wind stopped, Sonic tapped his foot out of habit. "Come on, you guys… the race was a bonus, you were supposed to be scouting around for the monster we came here for."
Sonic thought on it. Those snow moles were barely a threat, so it wouldn't have been them. Mothra was staring into the ocean… But then the ground underneath them rumbled. Mothra howled. Something suddenly burrowed up, bashing into their fox friend. "Tails!" Sonic exclaimed, reaching out to a knocked-out Tails. As the plume of dirt and dust cleared, Sonic saw Knuckles standing over Tails, juggling his gizmo. Sonic charged up a Spin Dash and shot towards the echidna, who held up his fists. Sonic collided with the red echidna in a split second…
And felt a sharp pain. Rings flew out from both Sonic and Knuckles.
Knuckles opened his eyes after the impact, and saw the little blue hedgehog stuck to his sliced boxing glove. Mothra flew towards the echidna, and Knuckles looked her way with fury crackling in his eyes. He used Sonic as a melee weapon, swinging the razor-sharp ball into the giant moth while Sonic struggled to unstick himself. Mothra scratched away at Knuckles, but the echidna powered through it. You couldn't even spot the blood trickling down his red fur. Mothra, bleeding and battered, knew she only had one option. She pinned the echidna down with her claws, and dug right into his ribs until he tossed Sonic aside. Mothra blasted into the sky, still holding onto Knuckles. Sonic tumbled along the grass, and then used his boots to stop in place. He reached a hand out to Tails.
Mothra flew high into the air, past the clouds… She stared at the crescent moon marking between her claws, on Knuckles' chest. She cooed sadly, and then let Knuckles fall. The echidna plummeted towards his doom, the surface of his island. As Knuckles reached terminal velocity, he felt the wind in his dreadlocks, and clenched his fists. Like magic, he managed to stop his descent. He shot into the distance like a jet glider. Mothra was about to pursue him as he crossed into the forest, until Kong leapt out of the trees and slapped the echidna out of the air. Knuckles went spinning out of control like a swatted fly.
Kong landed back on the ground, and Knuckles crashed somewhere far off. Kong looked around curiously. Mothra saw him, and called out. Sonic picked Tails up and backed away. Was this the monster they were after…?
Kong heard Mothra's song, and let out a loud sound of excitement. Stomping over to them, Mothra flapped her wings and flew into the air. Kong tried to leap for her, until… she landed on his nose and nuzzled his forehead. Kong took a moment to welcome his old friend, and then danced around happily.
"Whoa…" Tails mumbled, waking up and seeing Kong and Mothra reunite… even though it looked like Kong could understand this wasn't the same Mothra he knew from long ago. "I had no idea kaiju could form meaningful bonds… what a sight to behold, huh, Sonic?" Sonic looked at Tails quizzically.
"Hey, we're kaiju, and we're friends," Sonic said. He went back to watching Kong and Mothra Leo dance around each other, Kong shaking the ground as he tried to jump to Mothra's heights. Sonic then noticed something else in the distance. He was going too fast to spot the Egg Carrier Aratrum before, but now that he was staring at it from afar, it was giving him a very bad feeling. He did not trust the face printed on the side of it.
"We are?" Tails asked, dazzled. He chuckled quietly. "I guess I'll have to add that to my research findings." Sonic sniffed the air, and sneezed. Tails picked up on a strange, deathly stench. Kong and Mothra stopped playing. They all looked to the shore, and realized what it was.
The stream of rotten blood had reached Angel's Skull Island.
Godzilla was here.
…
"Captain?" Haruo Sakaki's second-in-command had said to him, as they stood on the launchpad of the Egg Carrier. Sakaki turned to face the girl. She looked distressed.
"You don't have to address me as captain now just because this is our first real battle," Sakaki reassured her, their Ground-Air Combat Walkers quickly charging up beside them. "What's the matter? Are you getting cold feet?" The girl looked to her mech, the F-6t Big Foot. The battery was almost at 65%. "If you want to say something… it's now or never. There's no telling what this new Godzilla is capable of."
"I know," the girl replied, her cheeks burning red in the cold, gray metallic room. "Haruo Sakaki, when I first met you at boot camp, I never thought we'd actually see combat. I joined the military to be like grandfather, but now he's gone." Sakaki's cold expression fell, as the girl began to ramble. The red in her face was now accompanied by shaking. "When Gojira attacked Japan the first time, I thought I'd be able to protect everyone. But we weren't even allowed to fight it when it powered up! Now that we're partnered with Gunpex… tasked with protecting the doctor, I just… can't believe I've amounted to so little!"
"Calm down, agent… it's okay! You've done enough," Sakaki exclaimed, holding her as she fell into his arms sobbing. "We're going to fight with honor out there, isn't that right? We'll protect all the refugees, I swear it!"
"I've done nothing… We're going to DIE!" She cried. "You, me, the whole troop, we're buying time for a bigger strategy! Are you blind?!" She tugged on Sakaki's arm, pulled him towards the open door to the rest of the island. He didn't budge, scowling. "We need to run, we can hide in the jungle!" She exclaimed, with the the night sky and all its stars reflecting in her eyes. Their conversation was captured on a black-and-white security camera, being fed to Robotnik's throne room. Knuckles watched the feed, watched as this woman tried to escape her duty. Staring into the feed, something changed in the echidna's angry expression. He remembered a village on fire… screams… a giant pair of wings blocking out the sun. He took one look at Robotnik, and his rage returned.
"Agent, it's my duty as captain to lead you into battle, no matter the risk…" Sakaki told the girl, clenching his fists with resolve in his teary eyes. He pulled his arm away from her grasp. "But I can't in good conscience do that, not this time. If you want to abort the mission, I won't stop you." Hints of a smile crept onto the girl's face.
"Come on, let's go, before…" the girl pointed to the huge open door they were supposed to fly out of in mechs.
Sakaki climbed up onto the B-3x Hot Shot, and sat down in the cockpit. "Hurry! Now's your chance. I want you to live." The battery reached 100%, and green lights turned on next to each mech. Including the F-6t Big Foot. The girl reached out for Sakaki, as the Hot Shot's windshield closed between them. "That's an order!" He shouted, with a voice that sounded like it was coming from very far away.
"Why does it have to be us…?" She asked, holding her hand to her chest. "It could've been anyone else!!"
…
"This is Agent Sakaki, B-3x Hot Shot. Requesting permission to open fire on Godzilla," a steel-faced Sakaki said inside the cockpit of his mech. B-3x Hot Shot and the F-6t Big Foot were the first of the Spider Troop to be sent out, ready to defend the Egg Carrier Aratrum by any means necessary.
"You do you. But remember, agent cocky, I want this specimen in one piece," Robotnik muttered from his throne in the Egg Carrier's pilot's cabin. Agent Sakaki glared through the cockpit at Godzilla as the beast rose its head from the ocean. Sakaki pulled his microphone closer to his mouth.
"Alright. Give it your all, Agent," Sakaki muttered, gripping the controls on his mech. The girl nodded, and did the same. They flew around and shot bullets at Godzilla, riddling the beast with tiny holes. "It barely broke skin…!"
Godzilla stood up, and spewed blood out of its new wounds, splattering all over the Hot Shot's windshield. "Lost visual contact!" Sakaki couldn't see anything as he missed every shot. The pilot of F-6t Big Foot watched, horrified, as Godzilla healed its skin. She fired missiles at the beast, but they just bounced off and created blasts in the ocean far below. "Charging beam cannon…!" Captain Sakaki shouted, as a bright light grew from the Hot Shot.
"What? No, you idiot! You're too close!" The girl shouted, standing up and hitting her head on the windshield. Sakaki squinted, steadfast. He then saw Godzilla's eye up-close through a spotless corner of his windshield. He screamed, but could do nothing as Godzilla swung its head into his mech.
"SAKAKI!" The girl shouted, as her headset crackled to life. She heard his voice right in her ears.
"Yuko, fall back!" Sakaki shouted, trying to get his mech to fly. He tried to stabilize the jet thrusters, but… everything had powered down, except for the beam cannon. "Yuko Tani, listen to me carefully, I…!" The Hot Shot crashed into the ocean. Sakaki's window was cleansed, and for a moment, he had a clear view of his surroundings, the place all his decisions had led him to. As he spoke, he realized his headset was emitting a quiet static. Yuko, inside the Big Foot, heard only the same static. She watched Godzilla as it approached. She was frozen, unable to do anything. Just then, there was a bright explosion in the water. A particle beam shot through Godzilla's head, and the monster stopped moving. Its mouth opened wide, as pain shot through its entire nervous system. Yuko watched as Godzilla fell over slowly, and crashed into the ocean. A large blast of water was formed from where the monster fell. Yuko's eyes darted slightly, her mouth agape as seawater fell down, obscuring the night sky in a faintly red haze. She took her hands off the controls, and let the Big Foot hover idly as chunks of Godzilla flesh floated up. She couldn't do anything to save Sakaki now. She let her head slump back onto the seat. She didn't move. Her heart didn't feel like it was beating anymore. In her grief, she was as good as dead.
Godzilla sunk to the bottom of the ocean, losing bits and pieces of its body. It was in so much agony. As it rested on the sea floor, it saw the remains of the Hot Shot sink as well. Something familiar bubbled up inside Godzilla upon seeing the charred human skeleton in the destroyed machine. Something so familiar… and so scalding. Godzilla was resting on the sea floor, it was ready to die after living in pain for so long. It was a scared animal under relentless attack from manmade weapons… This was how it all started.
Godzilla's diseased skin flaked away, as a dark gray, burnt claw shot out of its outer chest, spreading viscera through the water. Yuko watched as something began to emerge alongside chunks of flesh and deep-sea fish. It was barely visible in the red rain. "No…" she whispered, seeing a head rise out of the ocean. But it wasn't the creature she had just fought. She remembered the all-powerful beast that had first come ashore on the day humanity lost their place on the planet's throne. "It can't be…" The monster's claw grabbed onto Angel's Skull Island, and then Godzilla swung its tail around towards the Big Foot. "GOJIRA—!"
An explosion.
The injured Sonic, Tails, and Mothra stared out at the gigantic beast's eyes peering just over the ledge of the skyborne island. Despite his wounds, Sonic put on his game-face, realizing Godzilla had grown back into the exact same monster that first made landfall in Tokyo Bay. As the restored Godzilla stood completely upright, everybody from coast-to-coast could see that Godzilla was charging something up from his mouth. Tails weakly flew Sonic onto Mothra's back. The little fox panted as they landed on Mothra, the pain from Knuckles' attack getting even worse. "Mothra…! Move…!" Tails whispered, realizing Godzilla was facing them in particular. Mothra flew out of the way, just in time for Godzilla to spit a gigantic beam of energy at the island.
The sky quickly flashed a blinding white.
The beast kept unleashing destructive energy at Angel's Skull island, razing the land down the center and ending it with a huge explosion in Hidden Palace. Sonic, Tails, and Mothra all looked to the blast, in awe. Surrounded by the refugees from Japan. "Improbable…! A single blast that large could only be achieved through an immense positive feedback loop," Tails mumbled. Sonic's hands began to tremble, a terrible feeling growing right on the hedgehog's upper back. "I've always believed such a reaction possible, in theory, but…"
"How are we supposed to beat that thing?" Sonic asked, zooming over and shaking Tails by the shoulders. "There's a way, right?! We have to save everyone!" Tails' focus broke. His tails drooped. "Don't give up, Tails… we can still stop Gojira, right?!" The refugees who weren't disintegrated by the initial laser couldn't believe their eyes, devastated screams quickly erupting all over. Sonic's sweat-drenched gloves slipped off of Tails' shoulders as he looked back to the explosion in the distance. A mushroom cloud had taken form, seeping out of the cave.
Angel's Skull Island fell. As it plummeted from its place in the sky, two large halves of the island cracked apart. The blazing chunks and the smaller remnants crashed into the ocean like asteroids. The resulting monster wave splashed against the ankles of Godzilla… the Atomic Monster.
