Chapter 70: Chapter 70: The Sealed Archon Residue
It was Collei's first time visiting Starsnatch Cliff, and also her first time standing at such a great height.
She looked at Cyno, standing at the highest point, then turned to Bai Luo beside her, giving him an inquiring glance.
"Right now, the residue's presence is at its weakest," Cyno said, his tone serious. "Let me confirm with you one more time. After the sealing, you will no longer be able to use the power of the archon residue. If you try, it will devour you completely. Even if you stay by his side, it won't help."
Cyno wasn't trying to scare Collei—he was simply stating the truth.
It would be like if the archon residue were peacefully eating hotpot and singing, only to suddenly be ambushed by bandits.
Suppressing it would be one thing, but now the residue was about to be sealed.
If Collei ever gave it another chance to surface, it would devour her without hesitation.
Even if Bai Luo tried to intervene, or even if the Tsaritsa herself came, it would fight to the death. After all, it was just a residue now, and had nothing left to lose.
Collei stayed silent.
Throughout her wandering life, it was this power that had kept her alive.
Yes, it had tormented her, but it had also been her only means of survival.
To her, it was a twisted version of a Vision.
The reason she had agreed so easily last night was that she had thought it would only be a temporary seal, perhaps with a chance to break it later.
But now, to seal it completely...
A soft touch on her shoulder pulled her from her thoughts. Bai Luo placed a hand gently on her, speaking softly, "Make your own decision. Don't let it influence you."
"It?"
Collei blinked in confusion, then her expression changed as she realized what he meant.
The residue.
Her face turned pale.
She hadn't expected the sealing process would allow the archon residue to influence her thoughts.
"Please seal it," she finally said, her voice resolute.
It didn't matter anymore. Her past was just that—the past. She no longer needed to rely on that power for survival. She had a new belief now.
BK201.
The ever-present Mondstadt wind fluttered Cyno's cloak as he raised his hands in a gesture of prayer (the same gesture he makes when changing artifacts) and began chanting softly.
The gentle wind turned fierce, and dark clouds began to gather over what was once the closest place to the sky.
A hissing sound echoed out as black and purple flame-like tendrils were drawn from the back of Collei's neck, gradually pulling free.
"Ugh... Aaaaaah!"
Collei collapsed to her knees in agony, her bones creaking under the strain, her limbs spasming uncontrollably.
Bai Luo had described the sensation of extracting the archon residue as being like riding a roller coaster.
Collei didn't know what a roller coaster was, but whatever Bai Luo had described, this was far worse.
It felt as if something had taken root inside her, and Cyno was now trying to rip it out by force.
The black and purple flames coalesced above Collei, taking the form of a large cobra, its fierce gaze locked on Cyno as though it wanted to devour him whole.
But just as the serpent fully materialized, Cyno's chant reached its crescendo.
With a loud clang, walls of light appeared around the fiery serpent, forming a pyramid-shaped prison that completely enclosed it.
"Aaaaah!"
The snake thrashed wildly, slamming into the walls of light in a desperate frenzy.
Below it, Collei screamed in agony as though every blow from the snake was hitting her body directly.
The dark substance from her scars oozed through her bandages, absorbed by the ritual circle beneath her.
Cyno, his hands hovering in a near-prayer position, slowly brought them together. As his hands moved closer, the pyramid of light around the serpent began to shrink.
In the midst of the snake's anguished roars, the pyramid continued to compress until it was no larger than a sunsetia fruit. With one final effort, it disappeared into the back of Collei's neck.
Collei's body shook before collapsing onto the grass.
The golden magic circle beneath her had turned black.
"Whew... the sealing is complete. I'll return to Mondstadt to report," Cyno said, breathing heavily.
Sealing a god was no easy task, especially one that had lived inside Collei for years.
Though it was merely a residue, its long incubation in a human body had made it far stronger than an ordinary fragment.
Thankfully, his efforts weren't in vain. The archon residue was successfully sealed, and he now had more material for his academic research.
"You've done well."
"It was my duty."
Cyno didn't linger long. He had many more responsibilities to attend to, and though Bai Luo offered him a ride in the slime balloon, Cyno politely declined.
After Cyno left, Bai Luo gently lifted Collei, not waking her immediately but checking her condition instead.
Her vital signs were stable. Cyno's sealing had only targeted the archon residue; despite her earlier screams, Collei hadn't sustained much physical harm. The pain had mostly come from the serpent's backlash.
He lifted her arm and carefully unwrapped the bandages.
The once horrific wounds had vanished, replaced by soft, healthy skin, white with a slight blush of pink where the dark red scars used to be.
And it wasn't just her arms. Her face, neck, chest, and abdomen—places that had been ravaged by the disease—were all healed.
"Was it the circle's power?"
Bai Luo glanced again at the now-charred ritual circle, recalling how something had seemed to be absorbed into it.
He had initially assumed it was aiding the sealing, but it appeared it had also served as a healing array.
Looking down at Collei, who was now resting on his lap, Bai Luo gently brushed a leaf from her face and smoothed her hair.
After living with this child for so long, he knew what she endured every night: pain, torment, and fear.
He had once teased her, saying that she cried in her nightmares and would ask to sleep next to him, but that wasn't a joke. He had seen her suffering firsthand.
It was only last night, after using Cyno's potion to turn her into a cat, that she finally had her first peaceful night's sleep.
Bai Luo had done that not just to hide her from the Fatui's missionary but also to ensure she was in the best mental state for the sealing today.
Collei now slept peacefully, curled up like a baby.
Her face, free from its usual exhaustion and wariness, was serene.
"Sleep well. Rest while you can," Bai Luo thought to himself, gently brushing a strand of hair from her face.
After all, when she woke, there would be another battle waiting for her.
