Chapter 2 - Pitfall
Kujo Kumiko pushed the floor with the handle of her mop, and almost simultaneously with the sound of a small switch being turned on, there was a clattering sound and the floor opened to the left and right.
Apparently, it was a pit trap.
“Wah~.”
“What’s the use of you getting surprised?”
Seki Midori, startled by the sound, hugged me. How skittish can you be, for a man?
He smiled shyly, his cheeks blushing, so I smiled at him, too. Well, Seki is a coward, so it can’t be helped.
“Uh, I’m sorry. But it wasn’t much of a trap, was it?”
“No, it’s quite a trap. Don’t underestimate a pitfall, it could get you killed.”
Standing in front of Kumiko, I decided to carefully examine the pit. I peeked in and shone my torch down the hole, which was roughly two to three meters deep.
I could not see the walls of the hole. Maybe there is another passageway under here, and this pit hole leads to it.
“We can’t go down there, can we?”
Kumiko asks me that, and I nod.
If we try, we might be able to jump down, but we’ll have no way to climb up. And there may be more traps waiting for us down there. It’s too dangerous.
“Unless you have a rope, it’s impossible to climb down. If you suddenly fall from this height onto the cobblestones, you’ll sprain your leg. If you are dropped by surprise, you might break a bone. In this situation, where you can expect no help from anyone, if you hurt your leg, your life is in danger. It’s a really bad trap.”
When we hear the word “pitfall,” we only associate it with dumb laughter because comedians are often dropped into it on variety shows, but it is essentially a kill trap for hunting animals.
From primitive times, when people started hunting mammoths, to the recent Vietnam War, pitfalls have been a simple but effective tool for killing the enemy.
In other words, whoever set this trap is serious about killing.
“Don’t push yourself too hard, Kumiko. The situation is more perilous than I thought.”
“I’d die for Wataru-kun if it came to that.”
The joking woman is joking.
I decided to joke back too.
“Ha, then I’ll have Kumiko die as a wall of flesh for me.”
“Maybe that’s where we should draw the line. Even if it’s just a facade, responding to ‘I’d die for you’ with ‘then go ahead and die’ seems a bit too harsh, don’t you think?”
Seki consoles Kumiko, who makes a dumbfounded face, with a wry smile.
“It can’t be helped, Shinjo-kun is that kind of person.”
“Yeah, I guess it’s because it’s Wataru-kun. I was wrong to expect him to say something manly like ‘I’ll protect you’ out of the principle of reciprocity.”
What the hell, you guys. I didn’t know we were that close.
That’s a strange bonding thing to do, and it’s weird.
I was about to open my mouth to complain to them when they shrugged their shoulders and exchanged a meaningful laugh.
Behind them came a tension-free group of people chatting away.
“Oh, isn’t that Kumiko-chan!”
“Good. Kujo Kumiko-kun, there you are.”
It seemed to be a group from Class A that came. I don’t remember every single student from the other classes, but I recognize the boys at the center of the group.
Apart from us, they had managed to get here ahead of the teachers who were busy assessing the situation, living up to their status as honor students.
“Oh, you all made it too.”
Responding to the cool voice that called her, Kumiko returned to her composed honor student facade.
The tall, handsome man who called out to Kumiko, “Kujo Kumiko-kun,” is Shuichi Nanami, one of the best students in the school year.
He comes from a rich family, has a fine set of eyebrows, and is always in first place in his class. He is a regular member of the basketball team, even though he is only a freshman.
That much is still understandable. But it is too much to be true that he was nominated by the student council president to be the vice president of the school even though he is a first-year student, and that he is showing leadership in school events as well. He is an unrealistically kind man who looks like he belongs in a shoujo manga.
With such high specifications, one would think that he would be popular with women, but he has no specific girlfriend, and the rate at which he is confessed to is not very high. He is the male version of a “high profile” person, and it would take a very confident person to make a move on him. For example, a first-year student who is also a member of the student council.
With these thoughts in mind, I casually glanced at Kumiko, but she simply ignored me, giving me the cold shoulder. It seemed like a past she didn’t want to remember, and her lack of response was quite disappointing.
Anyway, Shuichi Nanami is such an outstanding man. He is a born leader who can lead students better than any teacher.
He stands out so much that even I, a person who has no interest in other people, have learned his full name.
“Good, I was worried when I didn’t see you in class. Hmm, I guess the ones over there are Shinjo Wataru and Seki Midori from class F.”
“Well, I appreciate it. I didn’t realize that Vice President Nanami remembered me.
This is the first time I’ve spoken to him directly.
While he was well-known as an honor student, it was surprising that Shuichi Nanami had remembered the face and name of a student like me from Class F.
“I’m still a member of the student council, so I remember the faces and names of the students. Even if I don’t, it’s only natural since we’re all from the same school.”
His friendly and non-condescending demeanor, while meant to be nice, seemed to rub me the wrong way.
Although Seki seems to be happy to be approached by a celebrity, I don’t like Vice President Nanami.
Too much of an Honor Student, that he is too suspicious. Unlike Kumiko, who is actually a bitch, he is not the type of person I would want to be ‘friends’ with, even if his saintly façade is true.
Well, I kept these critical thoughts to myself because stirring the pot would only lead to trouble.
“Anyway, this is a pitfall, isn’t it? Who in the world would do such a dangerous thing….”
“Vice President Nanami, there are traps here, so you shouldn’t walk around too much.”
I offered a warning, at least in form. What happens next is none of my concern
Gently, I pull Seki’s hand and quietly leave the place.
“What’s wrong, Shinjo-kun?”
“Just shut up and slowly return to the previous corridor.”
I whisper an instruction to Seki to move, and even Kumiko follows us without saying a word.
The group from Class A is here, so why doesn’t she just go that way, well, okay….
This place is already dangerous, there can’t be only one trap.
I don’t know how much of an honor student group the Class A guys led by Nanami are, but they are too careless.
There was a pit that could kill you if you were not careful, and if you wander around here, you will get caught in some trap.
I had given my warning, now it was up to anyone who stepped forward to take responsibility for their own actions.
While being grateful for the precious sacrifice, we let ourselves move away from it.
Immediately, it seemed like someone had stepped on something, making a loud noise, and a door opened on the right wall.
Perhaps it was the discovery of a hidden passage and not a trap?
I thought so, but it turned out to be a trap. A pig-faced, human-like creature came out of the wall. They have weapons!
“A, what’s that!”
“I don’t know, let’s just get out of here!”
No way, the pervert is wearing a pig mask as a disguise. No, it doesn’t matter at this point whether he is in disguise or not.
The guys approaching with machetes and battleaxes in their hands are not friendly.
If this really is an RPG-style dungeon, those are orcs.
We heard screams from behind us, but we ignored them and ran as fast as we could.
We don’t want to face a hostile being with a blade, even though we don’t have a good weapon.
We don’t even have a good read on their strength yet, so fighting them here is not an option.
“Uhhhhhh, that thing is scary! Shinjo-kun, hey, what the heck is that thing!”
“Shut up! Just run away as fast as you can.”
Seki is already crying and screaming. I think it’s pitiful that he’s a guy, but I guess that’s rather normal.
Kumiko, who is a girl and is running away before us with a nonchalant look on her face, is rather abnormal.
It’s a relief that we don’t have a girl here who’d cry and scream at a time like this.
While running, Kumiko mumbled,
“Orcs, are they those pig monsters from mobile games?”
“Kumiko, you play smartphone games?”
Surprising for an honor student.
Now, we’ve run away for now, but eventually, we’ll reach a dead end. The only weapons we have on hand are my torch and Kumiko’s mop.
“Continuing to run won’t get us far.”
“Do you want to think of some way to fight them off?”
Kumiko asks.
That’s right. We might be able to lure them away since there are quite a few of them.
“Um, there were three big ones with pig-like faces and two smaller ones with green skin and horn-like protrusions.”
“Seki, for someone who was so scared earlier… you observed well. It’s good that you have a keen eye, but if we don’t have weapons, we should at least pick up some small rocks.”
Even a pebble is better than nothing. Even the clean-looking dungeon floor has a few loose stones here and there.
They could serve as makeshift projectiles to distract the creatures.
If Seki’s eyes are to be believed, there are three Orcs and two Goblins.
It’s important to assess their strength, if there’s a next time, I’ll keep a careful eye out too.
We’ve managed to run about midway through the school building, but the monsters haven’t pursued us yet.
We should ask for help from other students instead of fighting by ourselves.
If there are 30 students in a class at school, there should be 180 students and 6 teachers here, according to a simple calculation.
Compared to the number of enemies, there are a tremendous number of allies.
Dealing with them individually should be manageable, but everyone is scattered throughout the classrooms and corridors, and I don’t think they’ll cooperate to confront the threat.
Raising our voices might just cause a panic instead of helping.
“In essence, we should strike while the others are being attacked…”
“Everyone, help us! Enemies with weapons are coming!”
Shuichi Nanami rushed in, holding a male student who had been roughly slashed at the shoulder.
He’s still able to carry a friend like that in that condition, I knew Nanami was made for this. I think you should change your last name to Dekisugi1-kun.
If you can do that much, I’m sure you should have had a weapon with you from the start to account for this kind of situation….
Thinking logically, no one expects to be attacked by monsters. I didn’t feel that level of danger until I saw them with my own eyes.
“All right, whatever this is, I’ll handle it! ooooooh!”
A large male student with a mop rushed in in response to Vice President Nanami’s shout.
Oh yeah, I know this guy from the first year as well. What was his name again?
He had an enormous build for a high school student, long black hair flowing behind him, and a sharp, samurai-like gaze. I remember he was in the kendo club and received an award at the school assembly.
After winning the individual division of the prefectural tournament, he got into a tangle with some upperclassmen of the same club who were taunting him, and he beat them all up by himself. His name is…. right?
“Mikami Naotsugu-kun? Please!”
“Leave it to me, Vice President!”
That’s right, they used to call him the “Unrivaled Mikami” or something equally embarrassing. I believe his class was… Class C, if I recall correctly.
I don’t know why, but Shuuichi Nanami usually addresses people by their full names, so he’s quite handy for remembering names.
“What are you smiling about at a time like this, Wataru-kun?”
“Shut up you virgin bitch, we’re joining Mikami!”
Since we have to defeat these enemies anyway, it’s a relief to have a powerful character leading the way.
Kendo club member Mikami thrust the handle of his mop as hard as he could into the throat of the lead orc that came running in.
The orc makes a sound like an egg being crushed, and with a single blow, it falls flat on its back.
A tremendous stab, it looks painful just to watch.
The orc collapsed with its throat crushed before it had time to scream. Probably an instant death.
I thought kendo clubs in high schools were not allowed to use thrusting techniques. As expected of the Unrivalled.
The enemies are spread out. Perhaps running around successfully scattered them.
I don’t know who died in Class A, but your sacrifice was not in vain.
I used the torch to burn the face of a child-sized goblin.
This goblin was wielding a short sword, and it seemed a bit tired from running, so I had no trouble dealing with it.
The goblin’s face sizzled as it touched the flames of the torch. It let out a high-pitched cry and recoiled.
I hit him again with the torch and he dropped his short sword.
Then, I kicked its short legs, causing it to tumble, and I stomped on its head with all my might.
I kept kicking him in the head until he stopped moving.
What the heck, these guys aren’t that strong.
I picked up the shortsword and stabbed it into the goblin’s chest. This would kill a normal creature.
The feeling of killing a living thing with my hands is indescribable, though.
My uniform was stained with greenish blood.
“Shinjo-kun, you’re pretty good at killing….”
“Seki, you should be throwing rocks from behind me!”
Even as I said this, I knew that it was impossible to ask a normal high school student to suddenly do battle.
Without experience in rough situations, telling someone to start killing right away is unrealistic.
Nevertheless, we achieved an easy victory in our first battle.
I took a Battle Axe from the Orc that Mikami of the Kendo Club had killed and tried to give it to him, but he refused.
“I prefer to use a weapon I’m used to.”
“I see, then I’ll use this one.”
Mikami nodded and decided to let me use the battleaxe.
I knew there would be more battles to come, so this was no time to hold back.
“Seki, you light the way with this torch. We can make the weaker goblins hesitate with it.”
“Okay, okay.”
While I was saying that, Kumiko was mopping up the other weak goblin.
I’m somewhat used to rough stuff myself, but are Naotsugu Mikami and Kumiko Kujo really just high school students?
Even in an emergency situation like this, it’s surprising how many people can be killed.
The other two orcs came this way after a delay.
Vice President Nanami’s friends came over with lots of mops, and we all pushed at them, so we were able to defeat the monsters.
With this, the first five monsters were defeated. I guess it goes to show that war is about numbers.
The first monster attack killed two of the Class A students, and one of them was seriously wounded, having been roughly slashed on the shoulder.
The wounded will die if left unattended.
“Watch out for the traps and let’s all move on.”
Under the commanding voice of Nanami Shuichi, a group of volunteers was selected from the students to proceed ahead. I guess this is what they call charisma; even the teachers, who should normally take the lead, seem to rely entirely on Vice President Nanami.
I have a battle axe, so I can no longer afford not to participate in the battle. I followed Vice President Nanami’s battle group.
I’m not particularly skilled in group actions, and I don’t have a strong desire to cooperate actively, but I do intend to move forward with them.
It would be more effective to have this group take the lead and I still don’t have the confidence to move alone.
But I can’t help but feel a sense of déjà vu.
I remember seeing this dungeon structure somewhere….
“Seki, you can wait with the teachers behind.”
“I can’t just let you go alone, so I have to go too…”
So that’s how it is.
Despite trembling with fear every time a trap activates, he’s a friend worth having.
“Take this for self-defense.”
“Sure, um, it’s a bit dirty…”
Segi frowns at the goblin’s green blood stained shortsword.
Sorry I didn’t have anywhere to wash it. But it’s better to have a weapon, even for self-defense.
If I didn’t need it, it would be fine.
I don’t care what other people do, but since I have the Battle Axe, I’m determined to at least protect my friend Seki’s life.
“Kujo-san is going with us, right….?” “Thank goodness we were worried about just us!” “Let’s do our best together.”
The three girls, who seem to be joining Vice President Nanami’s battle group, come over, saying in hushed tones. It’s a bit nonchalant of them considering they might die, not knowing the full situation.
The number of girls is somewhat overwhelming. They didn’t come to me, they probably approached because they saw Kumiko’s face.
“They’re all students in Class A like me. The one with long hair, long glasses, and a big titty is Ena Sashiki, the lively brown-haired one is Aya Mato, and the mature-looking short bobbed one is Mio Tachibana. Wataru-kun, though, you don’t have to get along with them.”
Kumiko leaned in close to me as if to snuggle up to me, and whispered. As always, she disregards personal space. I understand the rest, but she said “useless tits” as if it were nothing. What a way to introduce her. Well, you’re titty-less, aren’t you?
I didn’t say it, but he just stared at me.
Yes, yes, you’re not titty-less, you’ve got a little.
I didn’t care about the tits of a woman I didn’t know, and I didn’t want to hear anyone else’s name, so I didn’t care.
I had no intention of getting friendly with a student I didn’t know in this place in the first place.
Monsters in traps are no laughing matter. In a situation where you don’t know who might die, making new acquaintances could be more dangerous.
Right now, I’m focused on keeping myself safe, and I don’t want to make gestures like showing sympathy for others.
So, I gave a vague, curt response to the trio, who greeted me in a casual manner, even though I was standing beside Kumiko.
It’s a situation like this.
I can’t take care of all the girls I don’t know.
