Chapter 61: Chapter 61 Blazing Shadow (Sȳndor)
Gavin took a deep breath and tentatively climbed onto the dragon's back.
The moment his feet touched it's body, a surge of resistance came. The dragon's enormous form shuddered slightly, and a low, rumbling roar erupted from its throat, as though it was expressing its reluctance.
However, the overwhelming hunger gnawing at the dragon forced it into a dilemma. Gavin seized the moment, speaking softly to the dragon, his tone soothing.
Eventually, hunger triumphed over the dragon's resistance. Though still hesitant, Sȳndor reluctantly allowed Gavin to climb onto its back.
Once Gavin settled on the dragon's back, he ordered Sȳndor to crawl toward the far side of the magma lake. The dragon hesitated at first, its massive body remaining motionless. Gavin, undeterred, continued issuing firm commands. Finally, Sȳndor reluctantly rose and crawled toward the opposite shore.
Back on solid ground, Gavin quickly dressed, gently comforting the dragon as he silently waited.
Before long, the Blood Dragon Guards returned, leading three horses. They placed the beasts before Gavin.
The golden dragon regarded the horses with curiosity. Uncertainty flickered in its eyes, clearly unfamiliar with such creatures, but its insatiable hunger quickly overpowered any hesitation. The dragon was eager to feast.
Seeing this, Gavin suddenly recalled the dragon-taming techniques from the stone tablet. Without delay, he raised his voice and commanded the dragon in High Valyrian: "Stop!"
Sȳndor paused, its gaze filled with confusion. Gavin, quick to act, pointed at the horses and ordered: "Dragon Flame!"
After a moment's hesitation, Sȳndor seemed to understand. It released a torrent of flame upon the horses, incinerating them instantly. As the fire spread, Gavin felt an inexplicable bond form between himself and the dragon.
A strange connection pulsed between them. Gavin could feel Sȳndor's emotions—its hunger, its thoughts—as if they had become one. The realization took him by surprise, but he quickly recognized the depth of this newfound bond.
Once the flames died down, the dragon's eyes softened with a newfound trust and obedience.
Gavin gently stroked Sȳndor's scales and praised it: "Well done, my partner."
Sȳndor, clearly famished, devoured all three horses, its hunger momentarily satiated. The weariness in its eyes began to dissipate.
Gavin looked at the creature before him and, after a moment of reflection, said softly, "Let me give you a name—Sȳndor."
The golden dragon seemed to understand, raising its head slightly. A deep, resonant dragon's roar escaped its throat, almost as if it were acknowledging the gift.
Gavin smiled, feeling a warmth in his heart as he listened to the dragon's response. Sȳndor.
With that, Gavin climbed onto the dragon's back again, intent on retrieving the dragon egg from the magma.
This time, the golden dragon did not resist. Instead, it lowered its head, appearing docile, as though awaiting instructions.
Gavin carefully guided Sȳndor toward the dragon egg's location. The surrounding magma shimmered with intense heat, but Gavin's focus remained on the task at hand.
Upon reaching the mouth of the dragon's skull, Gavin carefully retrieved the dragon egg and placed it in a specially made backpack. As he did, he noticed the two broken eggshells on the ground. A frown creased his brow, and a question formed in his mind: one of the broken shells had to be from Sȳndor, but what about the other?
Gavin, full of curiosity, directed his thoughts toward the golden dragon.
At first, Sȳndor seemed unsure, but after a moment, it conveyed sadness and fear to Gavin. It was as if the dragon understood what Gavin was asking.
Gavin guessed the tragic truth—the other dragon had died. It had been slain by a far more terrifying creature, one capable of instilling fear even in a dragon. The thought chilled Gavin to the core.
Suddenly, a horrifying realization struck him—the monster that could kill a dragon had to be immense! Could it be the same creatures he had encountered before? Were they capable of growing even larger?
His thoughts raced, and he eagerly relayed his own questions to the golden dragon.
After several hours of communication, Gavin deduced that Sȳndor had been hunting monsters outside, but doing so was not only uncomfortable but also exceedingly dangerous. While some creatures were easier to hunt, Gavin had never encountered them. The golden dragon's small size and malnourished state were a result of these constant dangers. There was rarely enough food, and the dragon's survival in this harsh environment was a constant struggle.
In the dragon's lair, the heat of the magma provided a haven where it was not corroded by the lingering mysterious forces of the Valyrian ruins. But outside, Sȳndor struggled to endure.
It was no wonder the golden dragon was so thin. Gavin now understood why it had been so starved, barely able to fend off even moderately sized creatures. The thought of facing truly terrifying beasts made Gavin's stomach churn.
With Sȳndor's help, Gavin retrieved all the dragon eggs safely.
Once all the eggs were secured in his specially crafted backpack, Gavin patted Sȳndor's neck to show his appreciation.
The dragon eggs were packed securely, and the Blood Dragon Guards had gathered some valuable dragon bones and Valyrian steel items in preparation to leave.
As for the gold and gems, Gavin felt overwhelmed. There was no way he could carry it all, especially with the lives of his men at stake. If the situation became dire, he knew he would have no choice but to abandon the treasure and escape with only Sȳndor and the dragon eggs.
With everything ready, Gavin mounted Sȳndor once more, signaling the dragon to ascend.
Sȳndor's powerful form swiftly made its way through the labyrinthine passages, easily dodging the jutting rocks. The hot air swirled around them, but Gavin's heart raced with excitement, knowing they were on the brink of escape.
At last, they reached the vast chamber beneath the volcanic fissure. Sȳndor kicked its powerful hind legs, spread its wings, and in a powerful burst of force, surged toward the sky.
Gavin's first flight on a dragon was an exhilarating experience. The wind howled in his ears, and the world beneath him seemed to shrink as they soared higher. The rhythmic beat of the dragon's wings filled him with a joy he had never known.
As they flew through the sky, Gavin spotted several black shapes moving swiftly toward the Blood Dragon Guards. Without hesitation, Gavin unsheathed his dragon bone bow and fired several flaming arrows. The arrows struck the monsters with pinpoint accuracy, and the resulting explosions sent the creatures tumbling to the ground.
The Blood Dragon Guards reacted quickly, breaking formation to engage the fallen monsters. With swift precision, they beheaded the creatures, their movements seamless and efficient.
Thanks to Gavin's quick actions, the team was able to continue their journey, drawing closer to the coast.
However, just as they neared the exit, a deafening roar echoed from above. A massive creature, far larger than Sȳndor, emerged from the mist, its grotesque bat-like form charging directly toward Gavin and the dragon.
Without hesitation, Gavin shouted at Sȳndor to lower their altitude and move toward the Blood Dragon Guards, preparing for whatever would come next.
