Chapter 56: Chapter 56 News from Expedition Team
Boris hesitated before speaking. "My lord, there is one more thing. The envoy sent to Braavos has returned."
Gavin leaned forward eagerly, his eyes sharp with anticipation. "How about it? Will the Sea King sell me the Valyrian steel sword?"
Boris looked visibly uneasy, his voice faltering. "The messenger reported that Neptune refused. However, he extended an invitation for you to visit Braavos as his guest. He also mentioned you could tour his treasure house, though none of the items there are for sale."
Gavin's expression darkened, his brows furrowing deeply. Displeasure and disappointment flickered across his face as he leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms. After a long moment, he muttered, "The Sea King of Braavos is truly insufferable."
Boris stood silently to the side, his head lowered, unwilling to meet Gavin's gaze.
Gavin clenched his jaw and finally said, "Forget it for now. Boris, regarding personnel allocation—I'll evaluate the situation on each island and try to meet your requests. But you must also find ways to improve efficiency; we cannot rely solely on increasing manpower."
Boris nodded quickly, grateful for the reprieve. "Thank you, my lord. I will do my utmost."
Gavin waved him off dismissively. "Go. Begin your preparations."
After saluting, Boris retreated, leaving the study. Gavin sat back, lost in thought, his fingers drumming lightly on the armrest. Neptune refuses to sell because he believes I lack the strength to compel him. But one day, when my fleet becomes so formidable that even the Sea King trembles, we'll see if he dares deny me then.
His thoughts shifted to Valyria, where greater treasures awaited. The dragon eggs are worth more than any sword. Over the years, Gavin had pursued dragon eggs tirelessly, acquiring two fossilized ones devoid of life. Spies kept watch on Illyrio Mopatis, hoping to uncover fresh leads, but nothing definitive had surfaced. For now, Gavin chose patience, unwilling to risk losing the trail.
Days later, the Edmund family, who had visited Gavin on the Stepped Stone Islands, prepared to depart. Gavin escorted them to the docks, where the unique island landscapes surrounded them.
Edmund placed a firm hand on Gavin's shoulder, his voice both stern and affectionate. "Gavin, take care of yourself. Now that you have a vast territory, it's time to marry and secure an heir. Only then can you truly solidify the loyalty of your subordinates."
Gavin nodded solemnly, his voice steady. "Don't worry, Uncle. I know what needs to be done."
As the ship slowly pulled away from the dock, Edmund called back over the waves, his tone tinged with concern. "Remember my words, Gavin!"
Gavin stood at the edge of the pier, his gaze following the ship as it disappeared over the horizon. The sea breeze brushed his face, carrying his thoughts far beyond the waves.
A month later, Hassan hurried into Gavin's study, his expression tense.
"My lord, the expedition team has returned," Hassan reported urgently.
Gavin's eyes sharpened, his tone commanding. "How did it go? Speak."
Hassan's voice grew grim. "The channel map you provided was accurate; the ships navigated without hindrance. However, the Sea of Smoke proved treacherous. Once they reached the ruins of Valyria, the crew began falling ill. Their skin became red, swollen, and itchy, eventually ulcerating and oozing blood. Hair loss followed, along with weakness and vomiting."
He paused, his face heavy with worry. "Those who ventured ashore heard strange roars through the fog. They couldn't determine what creatures made them. Out of forty expedition members, only fifteen returned alive. Several of the survivors are gravely ill. The crew said those who went ashore were attacked by something in the mist. None of them came back."
Gavin frowned deeply, considering the situation. After a moment, he said decisively, "I see. Since the channel is navigable, prepare the ships and assemble the necessary manpower."
Hassan hesitated, concern written all over his face. "My lord, must you go yourself? The Stepped Stone Islands cannot afford to lose you now."
Gavin smiled faintly, his confidence unshaken. "Do not worry, Hassan. Have you forgotten that I can use magic? Whatever dangers lie ahead, they pose no threat to me."
Hassan stepped forward, his voice insistent. "At least allow me to accompany you."
Gavin shook his head firmly. "That won't be possible. You must remain here to oversee the fleet. Reports suggest the Sannjia tribe has amassed over forty warships near Lys. Though they are old longships, we cannot be complacent. The security of our territory depends on you."
Reluctantly, Hassan nodded. "As you command, my lord. I will make the arrangements at once."
As Hassan departed, Gavin's thoughts turned to the expedition. With his current strength, he felt confident in facing whatever dangers awaited in Valyria. The marked channel led directly to a point close to the Belerys dragon lair. He planned to land there with his Blood Dragon Guard and ride swiftly to the lair, reaching it within a day.
Opening his status panel, Gavin reviewed his abilities:

Gripping the Flame Blade resting by his side, Gavin's determination solidified. Valyria holds the key to power—and nothing will stop me from unlocking it.
