Game of the dead

Chapter 16: Run for your life

The air was heavy with fear as they all sat scattered in the dimly lit living room of the haunted house, each person clutching onto their partner as though letting go would mean certain death. Shadows danced on the peeling walls, cast by the flickering, unreliable light of an ancient television. Fear was evident in their eyes—nobody spoke, the silence filled only with shallow breaths and quiet sobs.

Nathan sat close to Alexander, the two of them holding each other tightly, as if their combined strength could shield them from the terror that lurked in the house. Ethan clung to Alex's legs, his small body trembling with fright, his face buried in Alex's knees.

In a corner, the twins, Lily and Eve, huddled together, their quiet sobs filled with longing for the safety of home. They whispered to each other, clutching their hands so tightly their knuckles turned white. Their bond was the only thing keeping them from breaking down completely.

Across the room, Chloe and Oliver were locked in a desperate embrace, seeking comfort in each other's arms. Isabella sat a few feet away, her eyes burning with jealousy as she watched them. Jessie, meanwhile, stood apart from the rest, his sharp gaze scanning the room, trying to make sense of the madness unraveling around them.

Suddenly, the room plunged into complete darkness. The television, the only source of light, flickered violently before static filled the screen. The tension was unbearable, and then, with a sickening screech, the static cleared to reveal a grotesque, writhing figure. The creature emerged from the television, its long, clawed hands stretching out as if to drag them into the screen. Its body was malformed, its head twisted at an unnatural angle, with glowing, hollow eyes and a wide, jagged mouth filled with rotting teeth.

Alex instinctively stood, pulling Ethan with him. "Stay back please," he whispered, though his own voice shook.

Ethan clung to him tightly, his wide eyes fixed on the creature. Nathan's words from earlier echoed in Alex's mind: "To escape this place, we have to work together." But how could they, when disunity and fear had already taken hold?

Before anyone could react, the twins, driven by blind panic, screamed and bolted for the door. Their sudden movement seemed to trigger the creature, which let out an ear-piercing shriek. Then, as if summoned by the sound, more creatures emerged from the shadows. Their forms multiplied, each one more grotesque than the last, their glowing eyes locking onto the group with predatory hunger.

Chaos erupted. Everyone scattered, clutching their partners as they fled. The creatures charged after them, their distorted bodies moving with unnatural speed and precision.

Isabella, Chloe, and Oliver darted down a dark hallway, finding a small closet to hide in. "Be quiet," Oliver whispered as they crouched inside, the sound of their heavy breathing almost drowning out the growls of the creatures outside. Isabella's heart pounded in her chest as she glared at Chloe, envy bubbling up inside her even in the midst of their terror.

The twins weren't as lucky. As Lily and Eve ran through the corridor, a creature leaped from the ceiling, its claws raking across Lily's back. She let out a blood-curdling scream, collapsing to the floor. Eve froze, her face twisted in horror as the creature sank its jagged teeth into her sister.

"No! Lily!" Eve shrieked, tears streaming down her face. Before she could reach her sister, Jessie appeared, grabbing her arm and yanking her into a corner. "We have to move!" he hissed, dragging her away from the horrifying scene. Lily's screams echoed through the halls as the creature tore her apart.

Meanwhile, Alex, Ethan, and Nathan stumbled into the basement, slamming the door shut behind them. The faint sound of the creatures scratching at the door sent shivers down their spines. The basement was dark and damp, the air thick with the stench of mildew.

"We need a plan," Nathan whispered, his voice trembling.

"Plan? Are you kidding me?" Ethan snapped, his voice rising in panic. "There's no way out of this!"

Alex placed a hand on Ethan's shoulder, trying to calm him. "We'll find a way," he said firmly, though he barely believed his own words.

But before they could think of their next move, a hissing sound filled the room. They turned to see a massive snake demon slithering out of the shadows. Its scales glistened like polished obsidian, its eyes glowing a sinister red. Its mouth opened wide, revealing rows of sharp, venom-coated fangs.

"Move!" Alex shouted, pushing Ethan and Nathan behind him as the snake lunged.

Nathan grabbed a rusted pipe from the floor and swung it at the creature, striking it across the head. The snake recoiled, hissing angrily. "That won't hold it for long!" he yelled, backing up toward the far wall.

Ethan cowered in a corner, his body trembling. Alex scanned the room, looking for anything they could use. His eyes landed on a broken shelf with jagged wooden planks. Grabbing one, he charged at the snake, driving the sharp end into its side. The snake let out a deafening screech, thrashing wildly.

The battle was brutal. Blood sprayed across the walls as the snake lashed out with its tail, knocking Nathan to the ground. Alex fought desperately, his adrenaline fueling him as he stabbed the creature again and again.

Finally, with one last strike to its head, the snake collapsed, its massive body twitching before going still. Alex stood over the corpse, gasping for breath, his hands and clothes stained with blood.

But their relief was short-lived. Above them, the sound of the creatures breaking through the basement door sent a wave of terror crashing over them.

"We have to keep moving," Alex said, pulling Nathan and Ethan to their feet.

As they fled deeper into the basement, the distant screams of their friends echoed in their ears—and it was obvious that making it out of the building was zero to none but what can they do their life hang in balance.
