Fruit Farmer In A Cultivation World

Chapter 31: A Good Year

Sen Lin smiled in satisfaction as he looked at the stones that were completely free of stone berries.

And it wasn't just the berry bushes that had been removed from the stones. Sen Lin, who had been in a good mood for being able to brute force his way through the problem, had been extra motivated and even cleared away all the moss growing on the stones.

Since he'd paid such a high price to have these rocks moved to his 'backyard', he felt that it wasn't a bad idea to keep them clean. It didn't require much effort anyways.

He looked at his budget Stonehenge one more time before going back inside his hut. The sun would start chasing the cold away in a few days and he'd have to begin germinating the seeds of the stone berries.

After dozens of terrible tasting sessions, he'd already picked out the best berries and stored their seeds. Among them was one with a bitterness score of just three, and several others with bitterness score hovering between four and five.

Aside from those, there was also a seed from one of the berry bushes that had a bitterness score of 7. But he'd set aside its seeds as the fruits from its bush were bigger in comparison to every other stone berry and had more flesh.

Once these seeds sprouted, he'd plant them all in the stones he'd just cleared up. With their close proximity, they'd pollinate amongst each other and pass the desired trait of "less bitterness" to their offsprings. If that wasn't enough, he'd just have to manually transfer the pollens himself.

Of course, he'd manually transfer the pollens among the berry bushes he'd taken those seeds from after they started flowering. He'd just gotten rid of the bushes bearing the most bitter fruits and made space to test the growth rate of the berries among other things.

As for the other stone berries, Sen Lin decided to leave them alone for now. There were still many uncertainties about the experiment at the moment and they still had use as Blacky's food source.

The good thing about the stone berries was their everbearing nature. Even after bearing fruit once, they'd continue flowering and bearing more fruits.

He didn't understand why the donkey liked the horrible tasting berries so much but he wasn't one to judge. After all, his goal of trying to turn these stone berries into something fit for human consumption was even harder to understand than Blacky's fondness for the bitter fruits.

Sen Lin wrapped himself in a blanket and opened the "10 Spells Every Cultivator Should Know."

The content might be difficult to understand and elusive, but Sen Lin had confidence. He had been able to cast the snow dispersing spell after three days of trial and error. He refused to believe he wouldn't be able to do the same with these spells.

Sitting under the first sunlight of the spring, Sen Lin thought back to the past few months.

It had been a productive year for him. The plum trees he had taken care of for the past four years finally bore enough fruit to earn him some money, putting him in a position where he would no longer have to worry about his survival during the winter.

He'd also come into contact with cultivators and managed to earn some spirit stones by growing winter sunflowers.

As his thoughts reached this point, he couldn't help but think of the interesting people he had met since Wei Mao left the village – the easy to get along Liang Zhi, the drunk salesman Lin Tu, little Ying who had become best friends with Blacky, the dog sized talking goose, as well as the dozen or so servants of the Golden Goose Escort Group with herculean strength.

There was also constable Wu, an old acquaintance he had to meet once again because of the thief that had tried to steal his chickens.

I wonder what happened to the thief. If I recall correctly, his name was Lin Zedong.

Sen Lin quickly pushed those thoughts away. It was better to not dwell on these useless things.

He was bound to run into both good and bad people in this world. While he was grateful to people like aunt Tong who had helped him, he held no sympathy for a thug who'd already joined a gang. If left alone, such individuals would only turn into a bigger menace with time.

Lin Zedong wasn't the only person whom he had a negative opinion of. The lady Liang Zhi had visited with a week back was another person Sen Lin didn't have a good impression of.

While she wasn't as bad as the thief, she wasn't exactly a good person. After all, her behavior could only be described as that of a shameless scammer.

Were she to be born back on Earth, Sen Lin believed she'd be one of those scammers who'd call the elderly pretending to be their grandchildren and ask for monetary help in the form of gift cards.

Not only had she barged into his home without any prior notice, but she'd also bolted after eating his precious scrambled eggs with mushroom powder. Those two ingredients weren't something that came by easily, especially for a poor farmer like him.

Were it not for the fact that she was stronger than him, he'd have stopped her with all his might. He still harbored some thoughts of avenging his loss but chose to reluctantly let it go after remembering the 20 kilograms of plums Liang Zhi had bought from him at a high price.

Sen Lin was brought out of his thoughts by a sudden cold that seeped into his body. A shadow had been cast over him and looking up, he saw a giant paper bird slowly descending.

Liang Zhi and Xiang Lan alighted from the paper bird, which swiftly shrunk down to the size of a sparrow and flew into Liang Zhi's pocket.

Seeing the duo's arrival, Sen Lin gulped in nervousness.

Don't tell me she could read my thoughts and came back to deal with me.
