Chapter 22: Get Nice and Cozy with the Snow
Sen Lin didn't expect the thief to be as resilient as he was. Despite being tied up and at his mercy, he refused to talk.
"What can you do? Hit me? Go on. I am not afraid."
Sen Lin clicked his tongue in annoyance. For a second, he considered digging a hole to give the thief a scare but quickly decided against it. It was almost midnight and he didn't want to go through so much effort.
"It's alright. I look forward to seeing how long you can keep up your brave act."
He walked to Lin Zedong and took off the latter's jacket. Though it was messy because he had to undo the rope, he easily overpowered the youth.
Sen Lin brought out a stool and sat down a few steps away from the already shivering thief.
Time passed.
Lin Zedong could no longer stand the cold. His entire body was quaking and even the breath coming out of his mouth turned into fog instantly.
"I'll talk. I'll talk. You can ask me anything. I will tell you everything."
"It's ok. I feel like you can hold out longer."
Sen Lin replied casually and continued watching the intruder.
Lin Zedong felt his mind go blank. Wasn't the farmer supposed to be eager to get answers out of him? Why was their position suddenly reversed?
He was desperate to talk but the other party refused to listen.
After much thought, he grit his teeth and used his trump card.
"I'm sorry. I was wrong. Please let me go. I'll tell you everything."
"It's ok. I'm not in a rush. And besides, like I said previously, you can still hold on for longer."
"Please. Brother, I'm freezing to death." Lin Zedong put on a grieving expression. "There's no great enmity between us. If you're angry about your hens, I can compensate you for it."
"Tch. What do you mean by there's no great enmity between us? You just tried to kill me."
"Please stop joking." Lin Zedong shouted angrily but calmed down just as quickly. "I haven't even touched you. Please just let me go. I swear there won't be any trouble coming your way in the future."
"You dare say you didn't try to kill me? Do you know how much work I put in to buy these hens?" Sen Lin retorted in a self-righteous manner, "I had to work my ass off for three years before I could pay for them. You just tried to steal three years of my life and still have the guts to say you weren't trying to kill me?"
"I didn't know that. I just lost my mind because of greed for a while. I'll make sure to compensate you for your loss. If you just let me go, I'll come back tomorrow with the money. No, no. You can come with me and I will give you my savings right now. It's in the hut where I'm staying at in the village center. The place is safe for you as well. There's lots of villagers there. I won't dare cheat you."
"What about the Black Blade gang? Won't I have to worry for my life every single moment if I let you go?"
Lin Zedong was full of regret. He had only hoped to scare the other party with the name of Black Blade gang. He'd never thought his past words would come back to haunt him in this way.
He smiled in an ugly fashion and plead sincerely, "How could the Black Blade gang care about a nobody like me? I'm just a small-time thief. You don't have to worry about the Black Blade gang."
"It's fine. Hold on for a little longer. You're still so young and full of energy. We'll talk once you get nice and cozy with the snow."

Gao Xuan climbed up the hill with a spring in his steps. It had taken him longer than expected but he had completed the task assigned to him.
After two days of frequenting the East Ridge Teahouse, he had finally found a person familiar with the Golden Goose Escort Group. And the best thing was that he still had two ricetalons left over.
"Brother Sen, I'm back with good news."
Gao Xuan, who had just opened the door with a bright expression was shocked by what he saw. Huddled in a corner was someone he didn't recognize – a young man similar to him in age.
The man wore an expression of extreme fear but that quickly changed to one of relief as soon as he saw Gao Xuan walk in.
"Please save me. This devil is trying to kill me. If you save me, I'll reward you handsomely."
Gao Xuan was confused. Why was there a man tied up in Sen Lin's room? Why was he so scared? Surely, he couldn't be scared of the always kind farmer who had a pleasing smile plastered to his face throughout the day.
"Oh, little Gao. You're back already?" Sen Lin greeted his little helper with a radiant smile.
"Yes, brother Sen. I've found out the location of a branch of the Golden Goose Escort Group. It's in the northern part of the city."
"That's good." Sen Lin pat the young man's shoulder approvingly. "I know you just got back but I have an errand for you to run."
Gao Xuan directed a curious gaze at the youth tied up in a corner but decided against inquiring.
"Don't worry brother Sen. Just tell me what you need me to do."
"Here, take this token." Sen Lin handed him a wooden token with intricate craftsmanship. "Head for the city guard's barracks and ask for constable Wu. Tell him that Sen Lin would like to call in a favor. As for the details… let me think. Just tell him that I caught a thief backed by the Black Blade gang and that my life is in danger."
Gao Xuan was thunderstruck. Even though he didn't know much about the East Ridge city, he had heard the names of several infamous gangs, including the Black Blade gang.
To think that this frail looking guy I was pitying was a thug from the Black Blade gang. I must make haste. I can't let any danger befall brother Sen.
Gao Xuan set off at once. Watching his fading back, Sen Lin could only chuckle and shake his head. He still wasn't used to his little helper's straightforward nature. If it were someone other than an honest and upright man like him, wouldn't they take advantage of this gullible guy?
