Chapter 11: The Long Awaited Eggs
The Autumn festival went as quickly as it came.
Still, for many in the Green Wind Empire, the festival was far from over. The kids were still enamored with the gifts they received and the adults were still mingling with their loved ones before the spirit of festivity faded.
Sen Lin was the same. He was still giddy with happiness as he looked at what the Autumn festival had brought him.
His tiny farm was no longer as quiet. Four chickens could be seen walking around and pecking at the ground every now and then. Their occasional clucks also gave the farm a bit more life.
But the chickens weren't the main reason behind his happiness. It was the eggs he was holding.
Feeling the cold shell of the eggs, Sen Lin was suddenly reminded of the time he last had eggs. The memories were blurry as it had been many months ago. Still, the happiness from the experience still remained.
Thinking of how much trouble he had to go through just to be able to afford these chickens, the young farmer was suddenly reminded of how much people took for granted.
'Were I still back on Earth, I would have no idea how much work went into getting just a single egg.'
Sen Lin decided to celebrate his epiphany by treating himself to something special – an omelettte.
Without wasting any time, he got to work immediately. He was no longer the amateur he was many years ago. After a long time of living alone, he had acquired many skills that came handy when living alone.
Cooking was one of those skills. He cracked the eggs in one smooth motion and dropped them in the pan. As the sound of the eggs sizzling rang out, a delicious eggy smell made its way to his nose.
Sen Lin swallowed a mouthful of saliva and flipped the omelette in a practiced manner.
When the eggs were done cooking, he could no longer contain himself. He served the omelette and prepared to dig in.
The moment his chopsticks touched the omelette, it gave way with a delicate, pillowy softness. It didn't take much strength to pierce it. Just a slight push was all that was needed for the eggs to release the gentle warmth of its perfectly cooked layers.
The first bite was pure bliss – rich, fluffy, and incredibly light.
The flavor wasn't anything extraordinary but it was deeply comforting. The thought of everything he had to go through to be able to enjoy the moment made him savor each bite even more.
Before he realized it, his plate was all but empty. He let out a sigh mixed with satisfaction and longing.
'That was worth all the sweat I put in. The best part is that I'll be able to enjoy this every day from now on.'
Imagining the happy days to come, Sen Lin closed his eyes and basked in the sunlight peering in though the window. The moment was precious. After all, it wasn't every day that he got to have such a leisurely start.
Life would get busy once again and he'd also have to prepare for the upcoming winter.
Thankfully, he wouldn't have to worry about surviving past winter like he had in the past. He had plenty of ricetalons in his pocket; enough to stock up on warm winter clothing and meat to last him through the cold.
Thinking of this, Sen Lin felt at peace. For the first time since his reincarnation, he could rest easy. There was nothing he needed to do urgently, no danger that could threaten his livelihood.
The hefty pouch hanging on his waist added another layer of security.
'Let's not get too complacent. Money is never enough. I should go visit the surrounding households to see if they have any chore I can complete for them. I should also buy things I need for winter.'
Sen Lin got up and left his farm after taking one last look at the chickens running around. After a few minutes of walk, he stopped by one of the largest houses in the Red Rock village.
"Uncle Lin, are you in?"
A series of cough sounded, followed by an unsteady footstep. An old man in his early sixties walked out of the door and spoke cheerily, "So it's little Sen. I heard you earned a lot this Autumn festival. Looks like you won't have trouble getting married soon."
"The festival wasn't bad." Sen Lin ignored the old man's comment about marriage and let him know why he was there.
"Uncle Lin, I came here to let you know that I'll be purchasing some radishes and winter melons. You should save some for me and not sell off everything."
"Don't worry. I'll definitely sell you some. When have I not looked out for you. You can rest easy; I'll sell them to you for cheap like always."
The two discussed for a while before settling on a satisfactory price. Sen Lin then bid goodbye to uncle Lin before heading to the other side of the village. Unlike the other parts of the village, this spot had a distinct smell to it – the smell of pigs.
Sen Lin, who had gotten used to the smell of livestock walked leisurely until he was face to face with a middle-aged man with a goatee.
He was Zhang Fei, one of the wealthiest individuals in the village. He had a business of raising pigs and made a killing every winter when villagers had to buy meat to either salt or smoke it so they could last through the cold.
Similar to how it went at uncle Lin's place, the two negotiated for a while before settling on a price.
'The only other thing that I'll need to spend money on now would be some winter clothes. But that can wait a bit more. Let's use the rest of the day to collect some hay and begin drying them so I have enough fodder for Blacky.'
He jumped into action as soon as he made up his mind. He returned home and equipped Blacky with panniers before heading out to collect hay.
It was only when the sun started setting that he returned back to his little farm and fixed himself some dinner. Halfway through the cooking process, he suddenly remembered that he still hadn't used the chicken mushrooms that Gao Xuan had picked up the last time they went to the forest together.
Sen Lin thought about cooking it but rejected the idea after some consideration.
'I should try pickling them. That way, I'll have some variety in my diet when winter comes. I don't want it to be like last year when all I had to eat was cabbage and rice.'
Having made up his mind, Sen Lin decided he would take on the grand task of his very first pickling tomorrow.
