Chapter 31: Chapter 31 – Fire can’t hurt a falcon
Who could have imagined that the fire worshipers would be foolish enough to attack one of the princes of Dorne in the middle of the street? If that wasn't mad enough, their reasons for attacking her lover were even crazier.
Almost an hour ago, she, Oberyn, and the young lord, Prince Doran sent his brother to meet ate, and talked in peace, mostly about how the young lord's life had been ever since he was forced to be on the run. To both her and Oberyn's surprise, Konrad was more than kind to tell them the name of the one who kept sending assassins after him. It came as a shock to her when she heard the name, mostly because Littlefinger was someone whom Oberyn's brother kept an eye on, especially after her beloved lover sniffed out four brothels belonging to the man right in Sunspear.
A bastard she might be, but Ellaria was by far a foolish woman. If those establishments under Littlefinger were not spy cells, she was a maiden Septa. Thought, what astonished her was her paramour's reaction to this revelation. Oberyn, for all of his wild nature, was someone who loved children dearly and would rather gut himself than harm one. As such, when he heard Konrad's words, he almost wanted to sail to King's Landing and flay the man alive
Thankfully both she and the young lord managed to talk the Red Viper from marching to his death. Oh, she did not doubt that her paramour would be able to kill Littlefinger, but once the man was dead, the old lion would use that chance to rid himself of a dangerous snake once and for all. She loved Oberyn, dearly, but if Lannister were to mayhaps send the mountain to hunt him down… chances are Oberyn would have tried to kill the man rather than escaping with his life.
As for how the red priests and their followers attacked them, they had just left one of the establishments where they ate when one of the young lord's guards was killed by a spear, making everyone ready for a fight.
To everyone's horror, instead of sellswords, tens of men and women wearing robes of the R'hllo's temple charged at them with various crude weapons. The ex-king's guard, Tyrek was the first one to react alongside those black and white robbed men with a cross on their back.
Coming straight at them, blocking the path forward, raced a couple of men on horses dragging a burning log. Like the crazy fool she fell in love with he was, Oberyn did not hold back and shot past her and the young lord at full speed, a smile spreading on his face. Behind him, she saw the Lannister quickly follow as he cursed her paramour.
The whole street was in flames. From every corner and rooftop, flaming arrows flew towards them like firebirds, some hitting the guards before igniting into a horrific scene. At the same time, the fire fanatics attacked while shouting 'For R'hllor!'
To her horror, Ellaria saw one of the priests wielding a fire sword in his hands slashing at Oberyn. But before the prince could be touched one of the young lord's guards rushed between them taking the blow for her lover. The man fell a second later. At that moment the horsemen crashed into those still fighting, parting and scattering them. Ellaria barely managed to pull Konrad out from the street just another group of ten fanatics charged at them from one of the now burning buildings.
The giant wild-looking man, who suddenly found himself next to her, helped, while Tyrek covered them both, ordering a few of those men in black robes between them and charging at the fire worshipers with the rest of his men. All around her, the battle slowly descended into madness. She was no fair maiden who hadn't seen blood, but not on such a rather big scale. Everyone she turned, she heard shouting, blades clashing, men crying out in pain, and bodies falling down. Her paramour, the wild man, and Tyrek as well as the remaining fifteen men, surrounded on all sides by the fanatics, fought like raging demons.
The savage-looking man deftly leaped onto one of the stalls that was still standing, grabbing one of the priests by the neck and kicking him into a group of followers.
"Protect your lord!" roared Gendel. "Tyrek! Go round!"
Just then, a man, half burned charged at him and grabbed the right side of Gendel's armor but couldn't stop him and so, the giant threw him to the ground before jumping on him. Taking her eyes from there, Ellaria could only wince as she heard the man's excruciating shout.
Another fanatic, this time a woman, ran towards them, and before she could react, the eight-name days' old pale boy gave a backhanded swipe with his small sword.
Konrad slashed at the woman's guts, catching the fanatic off guard as no one expected a young boy to fight back. The woman screamed and fell to the ground, clutching her bleeding wound. Konrad did not spare her a glance as he took Ellaria's hand and followed by two of his men, made a run for the safety of one of the shops' entrances.
Just as they were about to run into the shop, Konrad saw the feathers of an arrow sticking out of one of his men's sides. Before he could even react from within the melee, a group of seven worshipers broke through and were now charging at them. Despite the wound, his injured man was skillfully hacking his way past two fanatics who were smart enough to attack him from both sides. While parring a dagger aimed at him, Konrad watched another arrow strike one of his men in the neck. A second later, the initiate collapsed forward onto his knees and remained like that. At the same time, the other initiate, who had an arrow sticking out of his side rushed to his aid.
With his last guard busy, Konrad was left alone with Ellaria
Unfortunately, the wounded initiate didn't last for long as a third arrow found its mark in his chest before he fell to the ground dead just like his fellow brother.
By now, Gendel broke whatever resistance those fanatics muster and was now defending from a priest who was charging at him at bay with his axe, while Oberyn threw himself at one of the masked priestesses. The Red Viper was now covered in blood as he used one of the spears as a weapon, stabbing and slashing any fool brave or idiotic enough to taste his spear.
Before Oberyn could react, a man jumped from on top of a rooftop onto him, dragging the prince to the ground. The crazy fool was a bald man in his fifties with a long black beard, looking akin to a wilding that a priest, but before he could strike the confused prince, a sword slashed at his head only for the black-bearded priest to spin and cut back. Tyrek avoided the blow just in time for Oberyn to regain his bearings and after he grunted, he grabbed his spear stabbing into to bald priest, first piercing his throat, then jaw and face, before ending it with the man's heart. Once he took his spear back from the bald priest's chest, the dead body bent back and collapsed, bleeding with a gaping wound in his heart.
As Konrad and Ellaria watched the fight, the prince's paramour heard something behind them and turned around. She found a red-haired woman staring at them almost as if she was waiting for something to happen. She was dressed in a long red cloak that covered her slender body, and a ruby necklace that glowed faintly on her chest. Her eyes were a deep and piercing red, and her face was pale and beautiful.
Before Ellaria or Konrad could react, a bolt flew from somewhere behind them and hit the young lord's shoulder. Konrad gasped in pain and dropped his sword, clutching his wound as Ellaria tried to help as much as she could by ripping a piece of her dress and bandaging the wounded area while keeping the bolt inside for now.
The last thing Konrad saw before his world went dark was the horror-struck expression on the red priestess's face before she quickly ran away.
Never would have he imagined that going into one of his brothels would end up with him on the run. Then again how could have even imagined that one of the men who walked inside, was a man who stole his daughter and wife and turned them into luxury whores.
It would take him a few days or mayhaps even weeks to disappear, but in the future, he would not go for the families of a knight ever again, unless that second-hand Catelyn drives him mad with her complaints and naggings.
Right now, the best thing he could do was to lay low and wait for the knight to go back to his home, no matter if he would find his daughter and wife or not. For all he cares, the man could take his family back, after all, both mother and daughter have already been used by tens of men.
Like anyone who rose from the ground, Petyr was no stranger to harsh conditions and because of that, he was right hiding inside of one of his warehouses, of course under another name that could not be traced to him by anyone who doesn't have access to his ledgers.
His only fear was Lysa. He'd always hoped that one day he might be able to manipulate dear sweet and foolish Lysa in such a way that he could rise to power somewhere in King's Landing. There were so many intriguing possibilities, but Jon Arryn was an old man and his son was in Essos, sadly for him, years of sending assassins were not enough to get rid of a mere boy. So, he turned his attention to making Lysa his pawn, a gamble that looked profitable, one that he made in a hurry and without a decent plan. And he'd lost.
Add the crazy knight hunting him and his failure to find out why Yohn's son came here forced him into this situation. A lord, a member of the small council, hiding in a smelly warehouse, fearing for his life. Ah, the gods have a good sense of humor.
Petyr waited for nightfall before he slowly and quietly left the warehouse. He had a hooded cloak to conceal his face and a dagger to defend himself if needed, not that it would do much against a knight, but if he learned something from his first-ever duel, is that a man can't ever be too careful. After what seemed to be an eternity, he made his way toward one of the ships under another alias of his, a merchant named Oswell Stone.
Before going into hiding, he had paid the captain a handsome sum to take him to Gulltown, where he hoped to find a safe passage to the Vale. He had some contacts there who owed him favors, and he planned to use them to regain his influence and power, after all a man has to eat.
To his relief, he boarded the ship without any trouble, and quickly made his way towards his cabin. It was small and cramped, but he didn't mind. He only needed a place to sleep and hide while he got to the Vale.
Petyr locked the door behind him, before turning to light a candle, but as he moved towards the small table where the candle was, he heard a faint noise behind him. He froze, his heart pounding in his chest. He slowly turned his head, hoping to see nothing but shadows. Instead, he saw a figure standing in the corner of the cabin, wearing a dark cloak and a hood and before he could even say anything, Littlefinger found himself looking at the ceiling of his cabin before his world went dark.
