Chapter 176
-POV Citrine-
“Hey Cindy! I’m here to pick you up.” I yell after knocking on her door. It’s been about a day, and I promised to fly her to the new people Jessica made a treaty with. Well, it’s only an agreement that neither of us are Slavers for the event and will help each other if we can. It’s not really a formal thing since the only communication has been through letters from runners so far. Cindy is human and wants to exchange information with the new city, so she was chosen as a sort of ambassador. Remembering how poor relations were between the humans and elves in my last life, I figure she’s probably a good choice.
The door opens in front of me and she smiles at me with bright eyes. I don’t really see her that often, and the party earlier was my first chance to hang out. Cindy is usually busy with Sapphire or testing things with her zombies from what I understand. Unfortunately our conversation was cut short when I had to fly Morgan around. Pushing aside the thoughts of monsters that can pretend to be anyone running around, I smile back and ask “Are you all set? I have a couple bottles of mom’s milk that you’re going to have to carry.” She nods and shows me a bag strapped over her shoulder saying “You can put them in here. They won’t spill right?”
They shouldn’t spill since they’re in potion bottles. Those things have always been weirdly good at keeping liquids inside. I tell her “They won’t unless the bag gets smashed or something. I think.” Handing them to her and watching her place them in the large purse, my mind wanders to mom’s suggestion. If we know this town isn’t run by slavers, I don’t think they’d try using a control potion or something similar. Mom told me about her first run in with Canton’s leader though, so I can understand her worry. It’s not like it’s hard for her to give us the bottles and it shows that she cares.
“Okay High-C, I’m ready to fly.” Cindy announces after straightening her clothes that will surely just get disheveled in the wind soon. I respond “I don’t want my nickname to be a beverage. Try again.” She looks surprised and says “Oh, I wonder who told you about it. Darn, well I guess my excuse of high being like flying and C being the first letter of your name won’t cut it.” She then seems to think while we walk outside, mumbling “C-Wing sounds too much like a chicken wing…” I can’t help but giggle a little. Cindy seems to be a really bubbly person. I bet she was popular in with boys growing up.
I grab her from behind and tell her “It’s going to be hard to hear anything we say to each other while I’m fly fast, so I’m not trying to be rude if I don’t respond.” I can tell she’s excited to fly when she answers “I understand, we can chat during the pee breaks.” It’s nice to hear someone talking so human again. Mom and my sisters are just different in how they talk about stuff. It’s probably because they don’t have a lot of life experience or time to develop a certain culture. I think the last human I spent any amount of time with was my new dad… I can’t help but sigh as I take off into the air.
I suppose I’ve been around Pops a few times, but we don’t really talk. I have a hard time relating to the grizzled old veteran types. He did seem pretty skilled during that orgy I watched a while back, so maybe I should try… Ah, my family’s lewdness has definitely rubbed off on me. I need to be careful with what I say out loud in this new city so they don’t think I’m a weirdo. That is why I’m taking her with my unmarked body after all. Well, that and Amber invited me to blow off some steam and earn some free points with Marble’s friends later.
I feel a bit bad basically abandoning her other body and mom to watch over the frogmen, but it was just so boring. I doubt some elves and a Player hound can top what the bulls could do though. The size at least will surely be noticeable, but Amber and mom both vouch for their abilities.
About 2 hours later
I land near a small stream and put Cindy down. “Thanks C, I think I drank too much before leaving. You know how it is.” She says, and I guess it’s not too bad so I nod. I do know how long trips can be on the bladder. Come to think of it, both of us have probably had ridiculous amounts of babies at this point. I guess the System makes kegels unnecessary. It’s a small win, but it’s still nice. Once we both finish up in the bushes we decide to cool off a bit in the stream. It’s been really hot the past few days and I think we’re getting into summer.
“So are you married to Opal for the long haul like Amber, or are you waiting for the right person like Sap?” She asks, and I finish drinking the water I scooped into my hands. “I guess you could say I’m long haul. I’m not really the same as Amber though, I just prefer to be alone usually. Opal’s different for me though, and I don’t get uncomfortable around her with prolonged exposure.” I’m simplifying it a bit, but I’m sure she doesn’t want to hear the details. Cindy dips her hair in the water and then it gets dry again a moment later. I think she used some sort of skill for drying. Must be nice. Most of my skills are combat related so I do envy people with cleaning skills sometimes. Big sis Sapphire is trying to show off, I’m certain of it.
The young woman smiles at me and says “Opal is pretty easy to get along with. I’d like to think I will find someone to really marry one day, but I’ll probably do it with my extra body. Having two of these things is super helpful. I hope my future husband understands.” I think and ask “You have a human son right? That must be hard to deal with in this world.” She shakes her head though and answers “It’s a lot easier after moving here with you all. That Sara woman is a wonder for my boy, and she gives me all the free time I could ask for. It’s hard being a mother fresh out of high school and the apocalypse. I hope he doesn’t hate me later for leaving him with a babysitter so much.”
I remember in my past life before the System came hearing women talk about how much they wished they could just take a vacation away from their kids. Cindy is still young and probably wasn’t planning on having to take care of a child so soon. It’s good that she’s found a balance for now. I know it’s different for human babies, but I find it hard to judge another mother’s decisions even if mine grow up in just a day. Being a mother can be tough when it doesn’t feel rewarding. I feel a bit silly naming so many of my kids spy numbers now that I’ve had time to think about it. Well they still seemed to be enjoying it at the last meet-up so it can’t be that bad.
I decide to ask “So did you get pregnant with him before or after the System came?” Cindy responds with a giggle and says “Well it’s kind of a bad story. Or I guess I was bad in it. I got pregnant right before the System came with my boyfriend’s best friend, and then I even married his friend’s dad. I of course didn’t know that Jeff had survived, his house exploded right in front of my eyes after all.” The name Jeff makes me a bit sad, but her story sounds kind of familiar. So I ask “Do you mean Jeff Taylor?” She nods and gets a sad smile adding “I miss him sometimes. I was never really able to apologize or explain myself to him. We grew up together, but all I could do when I found out he survived was panic and put on an act.”
I decide that this is a good opportunity and say “Jeff was my dad, and I didn’t know him very long. Could you tell me more about him?” She seems surprised, but then smiles and tells me “I can do that, but you’ll have to be prepared for a lot of corniness.” I could tell he was a bit of a dork already, so I don’t mind. I think talking about him with someone who knew him so well will help me move on better. So this is the woman that made papa crazy in my last life. Cindy seems nicer than I ever envisioned her from his ravings. I already knew people could change, but it takes a lot of effort and good company.
