Chapter 4: Chapter 2: Rune of Flame

The flames of Fuyuki burned brighter as Angela stood still, her yellow eyes narrowing at the shadowy figure before her. She draw One sin and hundred good deeds from her book light shape into reality and "One Sin and a Hundred Good Deeds" materialized. The skeletal club adorned with jagged thorns, rested heavily in her hands. It pulsed faintly with a holy energy, as though eager to strike. Angela analyzed the enemy's every movement, her mind racing to understand the Servant's speed and precision.

Mash stood at her side, shield raised. Her defensive stance mirrored Angela's calculated readiness. "Angela" Mash said, her voice steady. "The Servant is fast. Let work together."

Angela didn't look away from her opponent. "Noted" she replied curtly.

Across from them, Medusa coiled her chain blade around her arm, her glowing eyes locked onto Angela with a predatory glint. Her lips curled into a smirk as she darted forward.

Angela moved swiftly, raising the thorned club and swinging it in a wide arc. The air cracked with the force of the blow, but Medusa was already gone, her form blurring as she dodged to the side. The chain blade followed, slicing toward Angela's exposed flank.

Mash stepped in, intercepting the attack with her shield. The clash sent a shockwave rippling through the air, sparks flying as the chain recoiled.

Angela adjusted her stance, spinning the club in her hands. Her eyes flicked toward Medusa, who was already repositioning for another strike. "Annoying"

Medusa's smirk deepened as she lunged again, her chain whipping toward Angela's legs. Angela jumped back, narrowly avoiding the strike, and countered with a downward swing of her weapon. The thorned head slammed into the ground with a thunderous crash, sending debris flying, but Medusa had already moved out of range.

Angela's frustration began to show in the sharpness of her movements. She stepped forward, swinging the club in a wide arc, aiming to corner Medusa. "Stand still and face your end," Angela growled, her tone colder than usual.

Medusa dodged effortlessly, her chain blade snapping forward to counter. Angela raised club to block, but the force of the strike sent her staggering back slightly. The weight of the weapon, combined with Medusa's relentless speed, was beginning to wear on her.

Angela tried to summon another fragment of her power. Her book's pages glowed brighter, but as she focused, the light dimmed and flickered. Her expression hardened. "Why isn't it responding?" she muttered, flipping through the book rapidly.

The images of abnormalities blurred and shifted, refusing to solidify into anything tangible. Angela's frustration mounted, but she pushed it aside, her analytical mind racing.

Medusa, sensing Angela's hesitation, took advantage. She closed the distance in a single bound, her chain lashing out like a whip. Angela stepped back, her grip tightening on the book, but her movements were a fraction too slow.

The chain grazed her arm, leaving a shallow cut. Angela winced, her composed mask slipping for a moment. "This is… inefficient," she muttered, more to herself than anyone else.

"Angela, look out!" Mash's voice cut through the chaos as Medusa's chain came down again, aiming for Angela's exposed side.

Mash darted forward, her shield raised just in time to intercept the attack. The chain slammed against the shield with a deafening clang, sparks flying from the impact. Mash held firm, gritting her teeth as the force of the blow reverberated through her arms.

Mash moved to Angela's side, her shield raised to cover them both. "We need to work together," Mash said, her voice firm. "She's too fast for us to handle individually."

Angela nodded reluctantly. "Very well. I'll bait her; you cover my openings."

Mash gave a quick nod, bracing herself as Medusa circled them like a predator.

Medusa lunged again, her chain blade snapping toward Angela's midsection. Angela swung her club upward, deflecting the chain with a burst of sparks. The force of the swing sent the chain spiraling, but Medusa used the momentum to close the distance between them.

Before Angela could react, Medusa's blade lashed toward her. Mash intercepted the attack with her shield, pushing back with all her strength. "Angela, now!" Mash shouted.

Angela stepped in, her club swinging with brutal force. The thorns glinted in the firelight as the weapon crashed toward Medusa's side. But once again, the Assassin's speed proved superior—she twisted away, her chain snapping back toward Angela's exposed side.

Angela barely had time to raise her weapon in defense. The chain blade glanced off the club's head, the impact jarring her arms. Medusa pressed the attack, her movements a blur as she aimed to overwhelm Angela.

Just as Medusa prepared to strike again, a burst of fire streaked through the air. A fireball erupted between them, forcing Medusa to leap back with a hiss.

Angela and Mash eyes flicked toward the source of the attack. A figure emerged from the shadows, his blue cloak swirling around him like a living thing. His staff glowed faintly in his hand, and his expression was a mix of amusement and determination.

"Well, now," Cu Chulainn said, his grin widening. "What do we have here? A snake causing trouble, and two Servants trying to handle it. Guess it's my turn to step in."

Medusa hissed, her glowing eyes narrowing as she turned to face the newcomer. Her chain coiled around her like a serpent preparing to strike.

"Looks like I showed up just in time. Can I join the fight?"

Medusa snarled, her glowing eyes narrowing as she assessed the new arrival. Angela adjusted her grip on her thorned club, her expression cold and calculating. Medusa stood across from the trio, her chain blade slithering along the ground like a serpent. The predatory gleam in her glowing eyes hadn't diminished, even with Cu Chulainn's sudden arrival.

"Nice little weapon you've got there," Cu said, his voice laced with mockery. He twirled his staff in one hand, the runes engraved along its length glowing faintly. "Mind if I take a swing?"

Medusa hissed, her lips curling into a smirk as she lashed her chain upward. "You're interfering. I'll deal with you first," she said, her tone venomous.

Cu's wolfish grin widened. "You can try." He took a confident step forward, the ground beneath his feet glowing faintly as he activated a rune. "Anzuz!" he shouted, drawing a rune in the air. A fiery glyph materialized on the air before launching a flame toward Medusa.

The fireball streaked through the air, illuminating the battlefield in its orange glow. Medusa's form blurred as she darted to the side, her agility unmatched as the flames scorched the ground where she had been. Her chain lashed out with the precision of a viper, the weapon whistling toward Cu's side.

Angela reacted instantly, stepping into the strike. She swung her thorned club upward, intercepting the chain with a heavy clang. Sparks flew as the chain recoiled, and Angela took another step forward, her voice sharp and commanding. "Mash, hold the flank."

"Understood" Mash nodded, her shield raised as she advanced to block Medusa's escape routes. Cu circled to the opposite side, his staff glowing brighter as another rune began to form.

"Pale lady, keep her busy!" Cu shouted, his tone almost teasing as he prepared his next spell. "I'll set her up for you!"

Angela's yellow eyes narrowed. She swung her club in a wide arc, the club skull glowing ominously in the firelight. Medusa twisted away, her movements fluid and precise, the skeletal head of Angela's weapon narrowly missing her.

The skeletal head of the club smashed into the ground, sending a shockwave of debris into the air. Angela didn't hesitate, using the momentum to swing upward, aiming for Medusa's legs.

Medusa leapt over the strike, her chain blade snapping toward Angela's exposed side. Angela spun her club, deflecting the attack with a burst of sparks. "Persistent, aren't you?" she muttered coldly.

Angela didn't let up, using the momentum of her swing to shift her stance. She brought the club down in a crushing strike, the ground beneath her cracking under the force. Medusa leapt back, her chain lashing out like a whip. The blade snapped toward Angela's side, aiming for her exposed ribs.

Angela twisted her torso, narrowly avoiding the blade, but Medusa pressed the attack, her chain slicing through the air with relentless precision. Angela deflected the strikes with her club, the sound of metal clashing echoing through the battlefield.

Angela stepped forward, feinting with a wide swing to bait Medusa into a reaction. Medusa's eyes flicked to the incoming attack, and she moved to dodge, only for Angela to shift her grip and swing upward instead.

The skeletal head of the club caught Medusa's chain, tangling it momentarily. Angela twisted her weapon with a sharp jerk, wrenching the chain from Medusa's grasp and sending the weapon clattering to the ground. Medusa snarled in frustration, retreating a few steps to regain her footing.

As Angela and Medusa clashed, Cu circled around, his staff glowing with another rune. "Hey, snake lady!" he called, drawing Medusa's attention for a split second. "Looks like you're in trouble now," Cu said, his grin widening. He raised his staff, a blue rune glowing faintly along its surface. "Let's add a little more fire to this fight. Kenaz!"

A burst of flame erupted from his staff, arcing toward Medusa in a roaring wave. Medusa darted to the side, the flames licking at her heels as she moved with inhuman speed. She reclaimed her chain blade in a fluid motion, her glowing eyes narrowing as she turned her focus on Cu.

"Annoying mage," she hissed, lunging toward him. Her chain snapped forward like a striking serpent, aiming for his throat.

Angela moved to intercept, stepping between Cu and the incoming strike. She swung her club in a horizontal arc, the skull club catching Medusa's chain and deflecting it with a burst of sparks.

"Focus on me" Angela said coldly, her voice cutting through the chaos. She advanced on Medusa with calculated steps, her strikes relentless. The skeletal club crashed down again and again, forcing Medusa to retreat with each blow.

Angela seized the opportunity, stepping forward and swinging her club in a crushing downward blow. Medusa recovered just in time, her chain snapping upward to block the strike. The impact sent vibrations through both weapons, forcing Medusa to retreat a few steps.

Mash pressed forward, her shield raised high. "Angela, now!" she called, slamming her shield into the ground and sending a wave of energy toward Medusa.

The energy disrupted Medusa's footing, and Angela lunged, her club aimed for Medusa's midsection. But Medusa twisted away, the thorned spikes grazing her side but not landing a decisive blow.

"You're all annoying pests" Medusa spat, her chain coiling protectively around her.

Cu laughed, his voice taunting. "You're just mad you're outnumbered." He raised his staff, another rune glowing faintly. "Let's see how you handle this!"

Cu slammed his staff down, and a burst of fire erupted around Medusa. The flames surged, forcing her to dart to the edges of the battlefield. But as she moved, Angela was already there, her club swinging in a wide arc.

The skeletal head of the weapon caught Medusa's chain, tangling it momentarily. Angela twisted the club, wrenching the chain from Medusa's grasp and leaving her momentarily unarmed.

Mash seized the moment, her shield crashing into Medusa's side and sending her sprawling. "Angela, finish it!" Mash shouted.

Angela stepped forward, her eyes cold and calculating. She raised her club high, the thorns glinting ominously. "This ends now."

But before Angela could strike, Medusa's eyes flared with determination. She lashed out with her remaining strength, her chain snapping toward Angela's legs.

Angela stumbled, her focus breaking for a moment. Medusa used the opportunity to roll away, her chain recoiling back to her hand. "You're all pests" Medusa snarled, her voice dripping with venom.

Cu grinned, his staff glowing with yet another rune. "You've got nowhere to run now, snake lady." He slammed his staff into the ground, and a massive surge of energy erupted, trapping Medusa in a circle of glowing runes.

Medusa hissed, her movements frantic as she tried to escape the binding. Angela stepped forward, her club resting on her shoulder.

With a burst of speed, Angela swung her club downward. The thorned head struck Medusa squarely, the impact reverberating through the air. Medusa cried out, her form flickering as the Servant's strength finally gave out.

Curtain call for the Reception of Medusa

As Medusa's body crumpled, a strange light enveloped her. Angela stepped back, her eyes narrowing as the light intensified. "What's this?" she muttered.

The light coalesced into a book, its cover adorned with intricate patterns of a snake that seemed to pulse with energy. Angela's eyes widened slightly as the book floated toward her, settling gently into her hands.

Mash lowered her shield, her expression cautious. "Angela, what is that?"

Angela examined the book, her fingers brushing over its surface. "It's… a book of Medusa" she said slowly. "A fragment of her existence, preserved in this form."

Cu Chulainn approached, his grin still in place. "The hell she turned into a book? Never seen anything like that before. Guess you've got your own unique tricks."

Angela's eyes flicked toward him, her expression neutral but edged with contemplation. "Unique, perhaps. But this is not merely a record of her existence." She held the book up slightly, its cover glinting faintly in the firelight. "This… is part of my Noble Phantasm."

Mash tilted her head, confusion flickering across her face. "Your Noble Phantasm? What do you mean?"

Angela's gaze fell to the book in her hands, her grip firm but not forceful. "In the world I come from, those who dared to challenge me and receive the book they desire were drawn into my domain—a vast library. There, they would face an ordeal, and only those who passed my ordeal could hope to obtain the book they wanted. Those who failed..." She turned the book slightly, the intricate patterns on its cover seeming almost alive. "...were turned into books like this. Each one holds their essence, their experiences, their entire existence."

Cu Chulainn raised an eyebrow, leaning on his staff. "So you're saying the snake lady got turned into a book instead of dust because of your Noble Phantasm?"

Angela nodded curtly. "It seems that being summoned into this world has altered the mechanics of my abilities. Normally, combatants would have to fight me within my library as plan for this transformation to occur. But here, the rules of this servant system seem to have streamlined the process. Defeating her in direct combat was enough to trigger the effect."

Mash's eyes widened, a mix of awe and unease crossing her face. "So... every enemy you defeat will turn into one of these books?"

Angela's lips pressed into a thin line. "It would appear so, though I can't be certain yet. This system laws are not my own and the limits of my power here remain unclear. But one thing is certain—this book now contains everything that Medusa was. Her memories, her abilities... and her soul."

Cu let out a low whistle. "That's one way to keep a record. Creepy, though. You sure you're on our side, pale lady?"

Angela glanced at him, her expression cold. "Your doubts are irrelevant. My goals align with yours for the time being, and that is all you need to concern yourself with."

Mash stepped closer, her voice hesitant. "What will you do with it, then?"

Angela's grip on the book tightened ever so slightly. "For now, I will keep it. If this is how my power manifests in this world, then these books may prove… useful. Both as tools and as sources of knowledge"

"Maybe one day find the One True Book" muttered Angela lowly that nobody could hear.
