Chapter 10: “Fated Love: Shadows of the Past (A New Journey)
Chapter 0010: The Unfinished Story
The city of New York shimmered under the moonlight, casting a silver glow over Alexander's penthouse balcony. The skyline stretched endlessly, a breathtaking canvas of flickering lights and endless possibilities.
Claire sighed, leaning into Alexander's embrace. It had been weeks since the whirlwind of emotions had settled, since she had finally found a love she thought she never deserved. And yet, as she stood there, wrapped in his warmth, a lingering thought nestled itself in the back of her mind—was it truly over?
She glanced up at Alexander, his piercing blue eyes reflecting the stars. He caught her gaze, sensing the shift in her mood.
"What's on your mind?" he asked, brushing a strand of hair away from her face.
Claire hesitated. "I don't know… it just feels strange. As if something is missing."
He studied her for a moment before a small smirk played on his lips. "You're overthinking again."
She wanted to believe him, to let go of the unease creeping into her heart. But that night, as she lay in bed beside him, the feeling only grew stronger.
Then, at precisely 2:07 AM, her phone buzzed on the nightstand.
Sleepily, she reached for it, her heart skipping a beat at the unknown number displayed on the screen.
Unknown: You think it's over? You have no idea what's coming next.
A chill ran down her spine. Claire sat up abruptly, her breath catching in her throat. The message was simple, yet it carried a weight that settled deep in her chest.
"Claire?" Alexander's groggy voice came from beside her. He turned, blinking in the dim glow of her phone. "What's wrong?"
She hesitated for a second before shaking her head. "Nothing… just a spam text."
But the uneasy feeling only intensified.

Whispers of Yesterday
Claire spent the next few days trying to push the message out of her mind. She convinced herself it was a fluke, a prank, maybe even a coincidence. But deep down, she knew better.
It wasn't just a message. It was a warning.
She sat in the cafe near her office, stirring her coffee absentmindedly. The scent of roasted beans mixed with the faint hum of conversation around her, yet she felt detached, as if she were watching everything from behind a glass wall.
Then, she saw him.
Ethan Graves.
He was sitting three tables away, looking directly at her.
Her heart stilled. It was as if time had reversed, bringing back every feeling she had long since buried. The betrayal. The heartbreak. The unanswered questions.
Before she could decide whether to stand or run, Ethan was already at her table.
"Claire," he said, his voice lower than she remembered, rougher. "We need to talk."
She swallowed hard, forcing herself to meet his gaze. "You have no right to be here."
Ethan smirked, leaning forward. "You really think I disappeared by choice? You think I left because I wanted to?"
Claire frowned, something unreadable flickering in his expression.
"Then why did you?" she asked, voice barely above a whisper.
Ethan glanced around, then back at her, his expression suddenly serious. "Because I had no choice."
Before Claire could press him further, the cafe door swung open—and Alexander walked in.
His sharp gaze landed on them instantly, and Claire could feel the tension spike. Ethan noticed too, his smirk returning.
"Well," he said, standing up. "We'll have to finish this conversation another time."
Before she could react, Ethan slipped a small folded paper onto the table and walked away.
Claire's fingers trembled as she unfolded the note.
Meet me at Pier 17 tonight. There are things you need to know.

The Pier's Secrets
Night had settled over the city by the time Claire arrived at Pier 17. The waterfront was quiet, the occasional sound of waves lapping against the dock breaking the silence. The air was crisp, a stark contrast to the warmth of Alexander's penthouse.
She had told herself a hundred times not to come. That meeting Ethan was a mistake. But something inside her needed answers.
The soft creak of a wooden plank made her turn. Ethan emerged from the shadows, hands in his pockets, his eyes sharp under the dim glow of the streetlight.
"You actually came," he said, stepping closer.
Claire folded her arms. "You said there were things I needed to know. Start talking."
Ethan exhaled, his breath visible in the cool air. "You were never supposed to be a part of this, Claire. But when you got involved with Alexander, you became a target."
Her stomach tightened. "A target for what?"
Ethan hesitated before speaking. "The people who forced me to leave—they haven't gone away. They've been watching you. Watching him."
A shiver ran down her spine. "Why?"
Ethan looked away for a moment before meeting her gaze again. "Because Alexander isn't who you think he is."
Claire's heart pounded. "What are you talking about?"
Ethan took another step forward, lowering his voice. "I don't know all the details, but I know this—Alexander has secrets. Dangerous ones. And if you stay with him… you might not survive what's coming next."
A gust of wind blew between them, but Claire barely felt it. Her mind reeled with his words.
She wanted to deny it. To walk away and pretend this conversation never happened.
But deep down, she knew—her life was about to change forever.
—
Fractured Trust
Claire returned to the penthouse, her thoughts a tangled mess. Could Ethan be telling the truth? Was Alexander hiding something?
Alexander stood near the window, a glass of whiskey in hand. "You've been out late," he noted, his voice calm but carrying an edge.
"I went for a walk," she lied, avoiding his gaze.
He studied her before setting his glass down. "Claire, if there's something you need to tell me—"
She cut him off. "Are you hiding anything from me, Alexander?"
His jaw tightened. "Where is this coming from?"
Claire hesitated. "Just answer me."
After a long silence, he sighed. "Claire, I love you. But there are things in my past I can't change."
Her chest ached. "And what about the future?"
Alexander reached for her hand, but she pulled away. "I need to think," she whispered before retreating to the bedroom, leaving him alone in the dimly lit room.

A Dangerous Revelation
Days passed, but the tension between them only grew. Claire felt trapped between the man she loved and the truth she feared.
Then, one night, as she searched Alexander's study for answers, she found it—a hidden drawer containing documents, photos… and a gun.
Her heart pounded as she flipped through the files. And then she saw it—proof that Ethan was right.
A shadow fell across her.
"What do you think you're doing, Claire?"
She turned slowly, her breath catching as she met Alexander's cold gaze.
Everything she thought she knew had just shattered.
