Chapter 16: Chapter 16: The Knight of Treachery
Chapter 16: The Knight of Treachery
After the mysterious Servant revealed herself, Artoria's face remained emotionless. She simply gazed silently at Mordred.
"Mordred, I have already told you—you lack the qualities to be king."
"Arthur!!!"
Mordred immediately erupted in fury.
"Even after I destroyed Britannia, after I brought down your kingdom, you still refuse to acknowledge my talent?!"
She swung her greatsword once more!
CLANG————————!!!
Artoria blocked the strike with a single hand.
"Mordred, I recognize you only as a Knight of the Round Table."
Hearing those words, Mordred gritted her teeth. She tightened her grip and swung again with both hands—only for Artoria to block it just as effortlessly.
"Don't compare me to those knights! There was never a place for my talent among them!!!"
"An opening!"
Suddenly, a barrage of burning runes shot toward Artoria, aimed directly at the gap in her stance as she swung her sword.
"Stay out of my way!!!"
Mordred slashed through the runes, shattering them. Then, she even turned back and glared furiously at Cú Chulainn—the one who had just attacked.
"This is a battle between me and Arthur! No one else is allowed to interfere!!!"
"…Meh."
Cú Chulainn shrugged, retracting his oak staff. He then turned to Ethan and called out:
"Kid, you really managed to summon a hell of a Servant."
Ethan barely had time to respond before he suddenly felt the ground beneath his feet tremble violently.
"Is it… collapsing again?!"
Standing beside Mash, Olga Marie anxiously scanned the surroundings, quickly realizing something unusual.
"Over there! Something's coming!!!"
Following her gaze, they saw a massive amount of black liquid spilling from the Greater Holy Grail.
Clatter… clatter…
As soon as it touched the ground, the liquid took shape—forming an entire army of Dragon Tooth Warriors, identical to the ones that had previously pursued Olga Marie.
Within moments, nearly a hundred of them had appeared!
KAKAKA——————!!!
They quickly locked onto Ethan and his group, brandishing their weapons as they charged forward!
"Senpai! Director! Stay behind me!"
Mash instantly raised her shield, ready to intercept!
Olga Marie swiftly retrieved the magic crystals Ethan had given her earlier and hurled them at the enemies. Small explosions erupted, blasting several Dragon Tooth Warriors away.
"Ansuz!!!"
Cú Chulainn swung his hand, activating his runes and knocking back the incoming horde.
Though these low-level Familiars weren't particularly strong, the Greater Holy Grail continued to spew them out endlessly, as if their numbers were infinite.
Before long, Ethan, Mash, and Olga Marie were completely surrounded.
Cú Chulainn chanted his runes while wielding his oak staff like a spear, smashing apart enemy after enemy.
"Kid, this isn't working! We need to retreat!"
"No, hold out a little longer."
Ethan's gaze remained fixed on Mordred, still locked in battle with Artoria.
"If we can just defeat Saber, the tide of battle will shift completely."
"Easy for you to say…"
Cú Chulainn shattered another Dragon Tooth Warrior before casting a glance at Mordred.
"No matter how I look at it, your newly summoned Servant doesn't seem like someone who can resolve this mess so easily."
"No, she definitely will. Because this is exactly why she answered the summoning."
Ethan placed his full trust in Mordred.
"Arthur, if you still refuse to change your mind—then I'll just have to prove you wrong!"
Mordred raised her greatsword high.
"Crimson Lightning!!!"
Blazing red lightning rained down from the sky, utterly incinerating the Dragon Tooth Warriors that had surrounded them.
But that wasn't all. The magical energy within Mordred surged to an unprecedented level.
Mana Burst.
A momentary release of magical energy, amplifying her entire being.
And now, her greatsword finally revealed its true form.
Clarent, Brilliantly Shining Royal Sword.
A sword more radiant than any silver, equal in value to the legendary sword in the stone.
A blade meant to symbolize the right to inherit the throne—yet it had been seized by The Knight of Treachery.
Twisted magical energy had tainted its once-lustrous brilliance, turning it into a sword dyed in ominous crimson and black.
"I am no king, but I follow in the king's path.
I will destroy all that I must to bring the king peace!—Clarent Blood Arthur!!!"
At the same time, Artoria swung her own cursed blade.
"Swallow the light—Excalibur Morgan!!!"
Two equally overwhelming forces clashed once more, their magic entwining and colliding violently.
"Perish alongside Britannia, Arthur!!!"
Mordred roared, forcibly pushing her magical energy to its very limits.
Immediately, crimson lightning struck down all around Artoria, even leaving scorched marks on her jet-black armor.
Sensing her imminent victory over the once-great King Arthur, Mordred gritted her teeth and stepped forward—determined to crush the opponent before her completely.
"So, Arthur, how does it feel to be defeated by your own son? I bet—"
—SWISH!!!
Suddenly, a black beam of light pierced straight through Mordred's armor.
"—?!"
Stunned, Mordred looked ahead.
Standing atop the Greater Holy Grail was a man, an eerie smile on his face.
Before she could react, another black light shot toward her, aiming for her abdomen!
—CLANG!!!
Artoria immediately spun around, striking down the incoming attack with her cursed sword.
"This is between me and her! Don't interfere!!!"
"Saber, I granted you the Holy Grail, expecting something interesting to unfold."
The man's voice was chillingly indifferent.
"Yet, you've turned it into nothing more than a childish squabble. Truly, you test my patience."
"This pathetic play should have ended long ago. Allow me to hasten its conclusion."
As he spoke, a massive surge of magical energy erupted from within the Greater Holy Grail.
In the next instant, a flood of black mud burst forth!!!
Anything that touched this cursed sludge was instantly erased—burning, disintegrating, leaving behind nothing but ashes.
As the black mud surged toward Mordred, Artoria didn't hesitate.
She slammed her sword into the ground!!!
A single devastating slash tore through the earth, creating a chasm that separated Mordred from the approaching mud.
Yet in doing so, Artoria herself was swallowed by the black mud.
"Mordred..."
In her final moments, Artoria slowly spoke her name.
A Knight of the Round Table.
The forbidden child of her and Morgan.
The traitor who brought down Britannia.
With a storm of complex emotions in her heart, Artoria's body was consumed, vanishing into the abyss of black mud.
