Chapter 56: Fire Flows in July
Su Junyu had taught Wang Qi two more calculation methods, known in Shenzhou as the "Bai Ze Expansion Method" and the "Liye Expansion Method."
Looking at the formulas written by Su Junyu, Wang Qi couldn't help but feel sentimental. These were the same Laplace Expansion and Fourier Expansion he had familiarized himself with in his previous life, both exemplary methods of simplifying complexity.
Was this what they meant by "never forgetting to solve problems even after death"?
Wang Qi mocked himself inwardly.
After teaching the Bai Ze Expansion Method and the Liye Expansion Method, Su Junyu handed Wang Qi a piece of Heavenly Wood Core and returned the Mixed Red Copper Spiritual Energy Intrinsic Heavenly Transformation Formula he had previously calculated, asking him to simplify the formula for Mixed Red Copper and then derive the Intrinsic Heavenly Transformation Formula for the Heavenly Wood Core.
During this, Su Junyu especially emphasized that the Liye Expansion Method was of utmost importance, as it would prove highly useful when calculating the intrinsic formulas of mana in the future.
The Liye Expansion Method, which Wang Qi was familiar with as the Fourier Series, was used to simplify functions with periodicity. All cultivation methods either required transport of Circulation or regenerating in a measured manner, thereby producing mana with periodicity. Familiarity with the Liye Expansion Method allowed one to quickly uncover the mysteries of an opponent's technique during combat and grasp the rhythm of the battle.
Before long, Wang Qi handed both formulas to Su Junyu.
Su Junyu glanced at them and exclaimed in astonishment, "Did you study these before?"
Wang Qi shook his head to deny it. The astonishment in Su Junyu's eyes deepened. He exclaimed, "Truly, you are one of the most gifted individuals I have ever encountered."
Wang Qi was about to feign modesty with a triumphant expression but Su Junyu sighed again, "It's a pity you only entered the sect this year."
Wang Qi's face twisted, suddenly not in the mood to talk to Su Junyu.
"If it had been previous years, I might have joyously said 'Our Wanfa Sect has recruited another genius,' and then we brothers could have enjoyed our time together in the Wanfa Sect," Su Junyu continued, "Unfortunately, your pride aims high, nothing less than a True Inheritor will suffice. Mysterious Palace... becoming a True Inheritor inevitably means you must face that terrifying new star! It makes one dread to think about your future."
"That terrifying new star" referred to the current chief True Disciple of the Mysterious Palace, the most outstanding among this generation of cultivators. Wang Qi's ears were practically growing calluses from hearing others discuss that person.
Wang Qi earnestly said to Su Junyu, "This is my path, my joy, and it cannot and will not be changed."
Su Junyu didn't anticipate convincing Wang Qi. At that moment, Mao Zimiao approached Su Junyu with her workbook in hand, tears in her eyes, "This is so difficult..."
Su Junyu thought for a moment, didn't look at Mao Zimiao's workbook, but instead handed it to Wang Qi, "It's up to you now."
"Ah?" Wang Qi questioned, "Why me?"
Su Junyu seriously replied, "Guiding others is also a way for you to solidify your basics. Don't refuse."
After saying that, he stretched his hand out and retrieved the Liu Li Lamp hanging in midair, saying, "That's all for today. If you have questions, come ask me tomorrow."
Mao Zimiao politely bid farewell, "See you, Senior Brother Su."
Su Junyu, without turning back, waved his hand, "That's all Brother can do for you."
These words meant entirely different things to the two listeners.
Wang Qi huffed discontentedly, "You're just being lazy, aren't you? Pah, you promised guidance and should follow through!"
Meanwhile, Mao Zimiao's cheeks blushed, and her ears trembled continuously. Wang Qi had once saved her life during a trial, which greatly increased her fondness for him. The accidental "electric shock-like feeling" and that embrace Wang Qi gave her to satisfy his own mischievous amusement stirred certain feelings in the heart of the Half-demon Girl.
Unfortunately, Wang Qi tended not to think things through, engaging in whatever amused him, hence he was completely unaware of his actions, much less what Mao Zimiao was thinking.
Mao Zimiao's girlish heart turned into some sort of unrequited affection. Su Junyu had just revealed her feelings, and now, leaving behind that statement, how could she not discern its implications?
Wang Qi raised his left index finger, emitting Golden Light, while his right hand flipped through Mao Zimiao's workbook. After a while, he shook his head, "This is all wrong."
Mao Zimiao pouted, "Xiao Qi, you're bullying me. Not everyone is like you."
Wang Qi responded, "That's why I say, you should just honestly stick to studying the Path of Life Beings. With the limitations of your Half-demon constitution, your calculation abilities won't match those of the Human Clan until you reach the Foundation Establishment Stage, right?"
Mao Zimiao flicked her tail, ignoring Wang Qi.
"Okay, okay, do you want me to explain it to you now or find time tomorrow?"
Mao Zimiao thought for a moment and said, "Now, meow!"
As his cultivation increased, Wang Qi needed less sleep. Mao Zimiao, with her Cat Demon heritage, was as energetic at night as during the day. Wang Qi figured he should have plenty of time to explain the problems to Mao Zimiao.
Wang Qi then pondered another issue, "Where should we go?"
Mao Zimiao had initially wanted to suggest her room, but with night falling, leading Wang Qi into her room out of the blue would probably fuel rumors across the entire Immortal Institute by the next day. Similarly, Wang Qi's room was hardly a possibility.
Suddenly, Wang Qi declared, "Oh, I do know a good place!"
"Meow?"
"I'll take you there."
With that, Wang Qi stepped forward, and Mao Zimiao had no choice but to follow.
This night was another new moon, with the moon entirely obscured by shadows. Without the moonlight's interference, the stars appeared incredibly brilliant.
All of a sudden, Mao Zimiao remarked, "It's almost July, meow."
Wang Qi nodded, "Yes, July indeed."
Although Xinyue Immortal City's Liuyun Sect's laws regulated the climate, there was still a hint of heat in the air. Wang Qi wore only a thin robe, and Mao Zimiao was dressed in summer clothes, her forearms bare and her tail swishing behind her.
"Xiao Qi, by this time next year, we'll probably be in our respective sects."
"Assuming we pass the exams."
The two chatted sporadically as they walked. Mao Zimiao suddenly felt a bit happy. The darkness hid the changes in her expression, and Wang Qi noticed nothing unusual.
They walked all the way to the Institute's auditorium. Wang Qi used his movement technique to leap onto the roof of the auditorium, then gestured to Mao Zimiao, "Zimiao, come up here."
"Meow?" Mao Zimiao queried curiously, "The 'nice place' is the roof of the auditorium? Why, meow?"
Wang Qi smiled and gave a thumbs-up, "It's called sentiment!"
