Chapter 411: Chapter 411: The Apocalypse
After a passerby made a call, the fire brigade quickly arrived at the scene.
The VK Apartment District, including its surrounding area, houses many middle-class families, which is why the fire department responded so swiftly.
Alerted by pedestrians on the street, the fire trucks began to drive into the increasingly thick fog.
"My goodness, what has happened here?"
Naturally, some passersby gathered at a spot, watching anxiously as the fire brigade disappeared into the mist.
Eventually, even the sound of the sirens faded away.
One second, two seconds, three seconds passed with no signs of activity, only the initially faint fog slowly thickening. The high-rise buildings that were visible before were now completely obscured by the dense fog.
Combining these circumstances created an eerily strange scene, and the people gathered there finally sensed that something was amiss.
Thus, many began to slowly report this strange occurrence to the authorities.
In no time at all, many people arrived on the scene.
Meanwhile, the thick fog began to spread beyond the VK Apartment District.
Initially, it was possible to see shadows within the VK Apartment District, but as time progressed, the fog thickened and slowly spread outward, even the earlier lighter fog began to thicken.
This visible situation prompted the officials on the scene to disperse the crowd and seal off the area around the VK Apartments.
The person in charge was a middle-aged man with brown hair, dressed in a suit. He stood on the now-cleared ground, hands in his pockets, staring into the thick fog that covered everything, and spoke in a deep voice.
"What have we found? Is this real fog?"
Landry spoke while looking towards the team of experts conducting tests in front of him.
These experts were all normal humans. For their species, those involved in technology and various creative scientists were off-limits, as taking possession of their bodies did not mean inheriting their intelligence, only their bodies.
Thus, these smart experts and scientists needed to be preserved and nurtured.
Unfortunately, as development progressed, their numbers increased, and some foolish, uncontrollable members of their species only indulged in possession and pleasure, reducing the human population.
The higher-ups started to realize that this was unsustainable. A decreasing base meant that no qualitative changes could occur in this world anymore, only stagnation.
Therefore, the leaders imposed restrictions on each member of their species and even established a department specifically to deal with those who only sought pleasure.
This not only controlled and limited the number of their species but also allowed humans to recuperate and slowly recover.
Thus, technological development had been stagnant up to now, with no changes from before.
"We are still conducting tests, but it seems likely that it's just normal fog," someone nearby spoke up.
"Normal fog?" Landry looked at his subordinate, his voice deepening.
"Does normal fog swallow people? What about the teams that went in and disappeared?"
The few people nearby lowered their heads, unable to answer.
"Damn it!" cursed Landry, then said in a serious tone, "Is that the VK Apartment area?"
"Yes!" the previously speaking subordinate responded.
"Were our people originally there?" Landry asked, knowing his subordinate would understand without further explanation.
The subordinate did know but hesitated.
"Yes, there were thousands of registered individuals."
"So, what's with that expression?" Landry noticed his subordinate's expression.
"Are we unable to sense each other's biological signals?"
The subordinate, wary of looking directly at his boss, cautiously responded.
"Yes, sir. We can't contact anyone; all feedback is zero."
Landry now understood the gravity of the situation.
Their species could recognize each other, whether normal humans or their own kind, entirely through biological signals.
If put in human terms, it was as if they were individual base stations emitting the same frequency signal.
Therefore, within a certain distance, powerful individuals could receive biological signals from all nearby members of their species and use this to know how many were within range and their locations.
Of course, this was for the powerful; the weak could only receive limited signals and over a limited range.
People like presidents or resource-controlling magnates were powerful enough to receive more biological signals, knowing about all members within a ten-mile radius.
"Damn it! No wonder I sensed no presence."
Landry stared into the thick fog, his expression extremely grave.
This situation meant that all their kin in and around the VK Apartment District were dead.
"Seal off this area. No one is allowed in or out. Have more experts come here."
Hearing his boss's order, the subordinate also looked towards the thick fog that obscured everything, hesitating once more.
"Sir, what if the fog continues to spread?"
Landry took a deep breath and said, "Then it's beyond our control."
He looked at the fog, recalling the disappeared kin and the exploration teams that had long gone silent without any feedback, feeling an intense sense of unease.
He had a feeling that this fog would
not stop.
Indeed, as Landry suspected, the fog, which initially started at the VK Apartment District, eventually led to the entire disappearance of the vast VK community along with the surrounding streets.
The ever-spreading light fog eventually thickened, obscuring everything.
The streets outside the VK community vanished, followed by the neighboring CK community being engulfed, and then the nearby districts.
During the whole process, countless experts came to investigate, all reaching the same conclusion.
The composition of the fog was indeed just ordinary fog elements—water molecules, oxygen, carbon dioxide, etc., all typical components of normal fog.
This baffled the experts completely, unable to understand what was actually happening inside the fog, unable to figure out why the fog could block sound and continuously spread.
All these unanswered questions became a puzzle in this world.
The continuously spreading fog began to attract global attention, with some countries sending their experts to assist.
Unfortunately, no matter how many experts came, they still could not understand the reasons, although through various collaborations and some high-tech equipment, it seemed that an unseen and untouchable strange energy existed within the fog.
However, regardless, the situation eventually escalated into an exploration mission.
Protected by an elite special forces team, a group of experts entered the fog for exploration.
Days passed, and like the earlier exploration teams and military forces, they too vanished without any news or feedback, as if they had died the moment they entered the fog.
The fear brought by the fog slowly intensified.
As the fog began to envelop the entire Brooklyn area, the entire world, including the USA, realized the severity of the situation.
The military intervened.
Well-equipped and in large numbers, with aircraft and more ground tanks and heavy weapons, they entered the fog with a formidable presence.
Day after day passed.
This elite military force disappeared without a trace, from the moment they entered the fog, as if they truly vanished, without any sound or movement.
Despite their many weapons.
This caused panic worldwide, with people feeling as if the apocalypse had arrived.
"So there's absolutely no way?"
At the White House, located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in the District of Columbia, a very serious meeting was taking place.
The meeting included not only the president of the USA but also many other national leaders, all of whom were rulers of their countries and also among the top leaders of their species.
"No," the president of the USA, a robust middle-aged man, responded.
"I've tried many methods, and deployed numerous human military forces, but the result is always the same: they disappear."
Someone spoke up, "Including our kin?"
The president nodded, tapping the smooth table, "Yes, no matter what, we can't detect their signals. This situation means death."
"So what is the cause of this man-eating fog?" someone asked, their voice deep.
"There are no results. Humans can't detect any problem. They only detect a strange energy," the president said gravely.
"According to humans, this kind of energy has never been seen before and also doesn't fit with current logic because this strange energy seems to be generated out of thin air. As soon as it leaves the range of the fog, it disappears."
He continued, his voice growing even deeper, "It seems to be a dimensional space inside, wanting to devour our world. That fog is its tentacle."
"Damn it! How could something like this happen?" someone shouted.
"Regardless of what it is, everything is nothing before destruction," the person loudly declared, standing up and staring fiercely at the president.
"Piltor, I need you to abandon that area and drop a nuclear bomb. Since exploration and heavy weapons are useless, let's try a nuclear bomb. Its mighty force might disperse the fog."
The president first looked at the speaker, then around the room at the others. Seeing their expressions, he knew dropping the bomb was inevitable.
"Let's try it."
The next day, the high command approved the plan, and after evacuating the civilians, they deployed special launch equipment a hundred miles away from the fog.
As the world watched, a nuclear bomb rose slowly with the fireworks, heading straight for the fog that now enveloped all of New York.
In many people's eyes, the nuclear bomb penetrated the outer edge of the fog, dispersing the outer lighter fog before disappearing into the fog itself.
The only ones who knew the position and status of the nuclear bomb were the high command who had relocated.
Amidst a vast fleet of aircraft carriers, in a sealed room, the heads of state who had met at the White House all sat around a table, staring intently at the screen above.
The nuclear bomb had vanished into the fog, its onboard visual equipment turned completely white, and its positioning system had failed, but at least it let them know whether the bomb had detonated.
However, one second, two seconds, three seconds passed, and nothing happened, no movement at all.
The room was filled only with heavy breathing, and a long-unfamiliar emotion began
to rise in the hearts of these leaders who hadn't felt it in many years.
That emotion was fear.
"Damn it!" someone cursed while slamming the table hard.
Only the president of the USA and some other relatively calm heads of state looked at each other.
"Let's start relocating. This world is vast, and according to the spread of the fog, it will take at least a hundred years to cover the entire world," the president calmly said.
"Regardless, we need to move until this fog stops."
So, the apocalypse arrived.
As the entire state of New York fell, all the evacuees, arranged by the government, gradually moved towards evacuation points and were relocated to the sea or other countries.
—
At this moment.
In the Empire of the Sun Never Sets, in Trafalgar Square in the center of London, amid a crowded throng, a large and a small figure sat on the steps, watching a deliberately arranged live broadcast on the big screen, viewing the scenes of people being moved and the fog that now enveloped New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, and northern Canada's Quebec.
The smaller figure was a girl about ten years old, sitting on the steps, holding an ice cream cone, licking it while watching the planes flying around the perimeter of the fog on the screen and glancing at the worried and desperate faces of the people in the square, she quietly said.
"Uncle York, what about those nuclear bombs?"
The two, York and Aletha, had moved to the Empire of the Sun Never Sets when the fog began.
"Let's keep them for now, Aletha. How many have they thrown already?"
"Um," Aletha seemed to think for a moment, counting as if she were actually doing so, then responded a few seconds later.
"They've already launched 106 warheads."
Hearing this, York, who had been watching the specially arranged live broadcast screen, slightly raised the corners of his mouth.
"Is that so?"
