Chapter 48: Interim
"What the hell did you just say!?" A man sitting on a throne screamed in outrage at the report he had just heard.
"Your majesty, I'm sorry to report this, but Task Force One and Arlan have perished. However, the mission was a success since General Ezekiel and his family have perished as well. We confirmed the headless corpses of him and his daughter." A woman stated while on one knee with her head bowed down.
"You call that a success? If that bastard was killed, how the hell did the rest of Task Force One and Arlan all die? Hmmm??" Questioned the man sitting on the throne.
"It would appear that the estate of the General exploded and the rest of the remainder alive of the task force perished in the explosion. All of the communication crystals connecting to the remaining members were confirmed to have been destroyed." Stated the woman who was still bowing down.
"Damnit fine. What of the boy? That blue haired bitch continues saying that she can't progress further in the research since she didn't come up with the base foundation in the first place. So, we need that boy if things are to proceed as I've scheduled."
It was clear that the man was displeased with everything that had happened so far. The boy needed to be captured in order for his dreams to be realized if blue haired woman that he spoke of couldn't figure it out on her own.
"I apologize once again your majesty!" The woman slammed her head on the floor. "It was confirmed that the boy was inside of the estate before Task Force One infiltrated. It is assumed he perished along with the team."
"Damnit! Useless! You're all fucking useless!" The man was so enraged that he waved his hand causing a pillar to spear the woman who reported to him, skewering her several meters in the air.
As the woman tried to take in her in air with her lungs and heart punctured, the last thing she saw was the man, known as the Emperor, destroying the throne room.
…
On the Tarith continent, which was on the other side of the world to Lavanth, 11 people sat inside of a room gathered around a large table, however 3 of the 11 were holograms.
"Over 400 years have passed with no trace of that woman. Now that we finally felt her traces, we discover that she's already dead?" A man sitting with his head resting on his hand spoke aloud.
His demeanor passed him off as a delinquent with how he sat with his feet on the table and head on his fist in a nonchalant manner as the rest of the people in the room sat in proper positions.
"Turner, how can you still act so immature being as old as you are?" A woman spoke as she narrowed her eyes towards the man named Turner.
"What? I wanted her head for the reward, didn't you? Now that she's dead at least we can all return back to the Celestial World. I can't imagine she reproduced as there were no more of her accursed race alive, and we all know how prideful they were when it came to their offspring being pure." Turner just waved his hand, completely disregarding the insult that was thrown at him.
At this point, one of the people who was attended as a hologram spoke up, "We can confirm the death of the princess. After arriving at the scene and examining the area, it was determined that the princess must have forcefully unsealed what energy she had left and caused it to explode. The area for over a kilometer around was completely destroyed. Her energy does not leave the area, and we all know it is impossible to conceal their draconic aura after that variety of release."
A man with his face hidden behind his folded hands slowly moved his hands down to the table with a pondering face. "If that is the case, what Turner said is correct, we can return." Turner and the rest all sat up straighter at this point before the man dropped a bomb.
"However, we cannot be for certain that she did not reproduce. Turner and Sidra will remain in this world for the next 100 years to ensure that no other aura from Obsidian Void Dragons appear. Turner, this is a punishment for how lazy you are and have been both before and during this mission."
"Then what about me?" The woman who had chastised Turner before spoke up.
"I'm sorry Sidra, but I need someone I can trust here who can also keep Turner in check. Not to mention you're the only one of us to have established a semblance of a life here, so you'll be able to continue on with living here better than the rest of us."
"Fine, but I expect extra rewards upon my return." Sidra showed some reluctance, but agreed in the end as there really was nothing that she could do about the decision made.
"I accept your condition. Please take care to ensure Turner does his part of the job properly as well as making up for his shortcomings. This is a mission we cannot afford to screw up. But as we are running out of resources to maintain this many of us in this world, this is the best course of action."
A woman sitting next to the man who seemed to be in charge looked up from the papers she was writing on. "With this the extermination mission has come to a close for most of us. Those returning to the Celestial World, meet up in one week at the warehouse in Palos. We will be ascending from the pre-established relay point."
…
Inside of a carriage, a young woman with light green hair was staring intently at a communication crystal.
"Ugh, where is Kayn? We've been talking almost daily ever since we separated, but why does this thing not even spark up a single light now?" She was mostly talking to herself, however there was an old man in the carriage with her.
Looking over, the old man glanced at the communication crystal before asking the young woman a question. "When you put mana into the crystal, do you feel the typical pull on your core when it has accepted your mana and is trying to connect to the other crystal?"
"Huh?" the young woman tried again, only to come to a realization. "It doesn't feel the same. You're right. What does that mean Papi?"
"It means that the young man's communication crystal has either been deactivated completely, or destroyed. The first case is extremely difficult, but possible with a sealing artifact. The second, I don't know what to say about that."
"I hope he's okay…" The young woman spoke staring worriedly at the stone that wouldn't light up no matter how hard she tried.
…
Sitting in a dimly lit room with his eyes closed, an extremely handsome man with dark hair opened his purple eyes and smirked.
"Ha, the kid finally awakened. I wonder what happened to cause that this soon, he shouldn't be more than 20 in that world's time. Poor bastard, he must have really shit luck for it to have happened this soon. Oh well, not my problem anymore!"
He laughed to himself before smiling and closing his eyes to resume his meditation.
…
At the same time, a vision appeared in front of a mysterious entity. It was hard to describe what this thing was as it was obscured from time and space.
The vision playing showed a young man sobbing as he watched his parents being wheeled out of surgical rooms covered in white sheets. The vision proceeded to show the young man stabbing another man relentlessly with a scalpel before being shot with a gun.
The scene continued with a child being born with white hair and crimson irises. The child was loved by his family and he loved them back in return. As he grew, the child displayed his intelligence by providing his teacher with ideas on how to better the lives of others and even improve the healing magic of his world.
While the child faced many tribulations when he was growing, he was able to overcome them somehow. During three particular scenes, the vision cut out and started up again after the situation appeared to be resolved.
The last scene that was shown played out in full though. After seeing his families' disembodied heads before him, it seemed that the youth had given up completely, even while holding onto his young sister.
That was until wings sprouted from his back and encased him and his sister fully. Then as if it was a lie, a scream was heard through the vision which normally didn't have sound. The scream was the definition of hate and sorrow. At that exact moment, a translucent black fire spread like an explosion with the boy at the center.
Even after minutes passed, the giant inferno was still raging, shooting out a black lightning on occasion towards the surroundings. The vision ended with a figure wreathed in black flames launching out of the inferno, flapping its wings as it disappeared into the distance.
The entity sighed, "A pure soul corrupted by that child's sin. The last has finally appeared. That means he will make his move sooner than later. However, I may be able to use this last one. He isn't like the rest and upon evaluating him, he accepted that power to change his fate in a more selfless manner than the rest."
Thinking to itself for a bit longer, it made a decision. "I guess I am partly responsible for this, not that a speck of dust's life really matters to me. This speck of dust may just become the reckoning that my child needs."
