Chapter 11: Whispers of a Storm
The cold night air stung Jiho's skin as he stood in the ruins of the mall, the silence broken only by the wind whistling through shattered windows. His victory over Seo Gwan hadn't felt like a triumph. It had felt like a warning—one he couldn't afford to ignore.
The system chimed softly in his mind, bringing him back to reality:
Skill Evolution Available: Rule Bender - Shadow Dominion.
Jiho glanced at the notification but dismissed it for now. The upgrade could wait. He needed to clear his head and prepare for what came next. The Silver Fang Guild wouldn't take this loss lightly.
"They'll come for me again," Jiho muttered under his breath, his gaze turning to the faint glow of the moon. "Better prepared. Stronger. But next time…" His voice trailed off as a faint smirk touched his lips. "So will I."
The Guild's Response
Somewhere far from Jiho, in a sleek underground facility lined with reinforced steel walls, a tense meeting was taking place.
Seo Gwan's death had sent shockwaves through the Silver Fang Guild. His superior, a man named Hwang Taejin, sat at the head of a long table, his face a mask of barely-contained anger. His fingers tapped rhythmically against the armrest as reports were delivered one after another.
"Sir, we confirmed it," a lower-ranking officer said nervously. "Seo Gwan was defeated. The energy readings from the Subterranean Node suggest the intruder forced an unstable collapse of the Nexus core."
"And the body?" Taejin asked, his voice low.
"Recovered, but...it's almost unrecognizable," the officer replied. "It's clear he overextended himself with the core's energy. There's no doubt the target—Jiho—killed him."
Taejin leaned back in his chair, his eyes narrowing into slits. "Kang Jiho…" He let the name roll off his tongue, as if savoring it. "No ordinary rogue Hunter should have been capable of this. If he's tied to the Nexus..."
He paused, glancing at a map of active dungeons and Nexus nodes displayed on the screen before him.
"Mobilize the search units," Taejin finally ordered. "Send someone competent this time. I want Jiho alive—and I want to know everything about his connection to the Nexus."
"Yes, sir!"
Jiho's Next Move
Back at his modest rooftop apartment in the city, Jiho was sitting cross-legged on the floor, a steaming cup of tea by his side. He stared at the blinking interface of his system, contemplating the notifications.
Skill Evolution: Rule Bender → Shadow Dominion. Energy Control Expanded.
New Ability Unlocked: Shadow Echoes.
Allows creation of temporary shadow clones that can scout and fight.
Jiho nodded slowly. "Shadow Dominion...sounds more versatile. If I'm going to survive what's coming, I'll need it."
But his focus wasn't just on his abilities. Seo Gwan's taunts from the fight echoed in his mind.
"You don't even know what you are, do you? What your family has hidden from you?"
Jiho's jaw tightened. He had spent years pretending his past didn't matter—keeping his head down, staying out of trouble. But trouble had come for him anyway. The Silver Fang Guild's obsession with him wasn't random.
Something deeper was at play. And now, he couldn't ignore it.
He pulled out a crumpled notebook from his bag, a relic from his childhood. The cover was worn, the pages filled with scribbled diagrams and cryptic notes left by his late father. Jiho hadn't understood any of it back then, but now, certain phrases stood out.
"Nexus stabilization."
"The bloodline connection."
"Guardians of the core."
Jiho ran his thumb over one particular sentence underlined three times:
"When the Nexus awakens, the world will change."
"Bloodline connection…" Jiho murmured. "My family was involved with the Nexus. But how much did they know?"
The sound of footsteps on the rooftop snapped him out of his thoughts. Jiho froze, shadows around him stirring in response to his tension. Someone was here.
An Unexpected Visitor
Jiho rose to his feet silently, his dagger already in hand. The rooftop door creaked open, and a figure stepped out—a young woman, barely older than Jiho, with short black hair and a determined gaze. She was dressed in light combat gear, a faint Silver Fang insignia visible on her shoulder.
Jiho's expression darkened. "Another one?"
The woman held up her hands. "I'm not here to fight."
"Convenient, considering you're standing in my territory," Jiho replied coldly. The shadows around him coiled, ready to strike. "Talk fast."
The woman hesitated before speaking. "My name is Choi Haeun. I...I used to work with Seo Gwan. But the Guild isn't what it seems."
Jiho raised an eyebrow, though his stance remained guarded. "And why should I believe you?"
"Because the Guild is planning something far worse than you realize," Haeun said quickly. "They aren't just hunting you—they're after the Nexus cores. If they succeed, they'll control every dungeon in the country."
Jiho's eyes narrowed. "And you suddenly grew a conscience?"
Haeun met his gaze without flinching. "No. I grew tired of being used. Seo Gwan...he was just the beginning. If you want answers about the Nexus, about your family—then you'll need my help."
Jiho didn't reply immediately. The shadows around him quivered, mirroring his uncertainty. Trust wasn't something he gave freely, and he could tell Haeun was hiding something.
But he couldn't ignore her words.
"Fine," Jiho said at last. "But if you betray me…"
"I won't," Haeun interrupted, her voice firm. "You're going to need allies, Kang Jiho. Whether you like it or not."
Jiho scoffed softly, the shadows receding. "We'll see."
