Chapter 39: Dividing the Immortal Herbs
After some thought, Yang Zhentian's expression grew serious, and he sat down with his son for a discussion.
"Son, tell me your plan."
"Dad, you know how valuable these immortal-grade herbs are. Since it was just the two of us who found them, they belong to us—our family. They aren't meant for the entire Yang Clan."
"And what do you plan to do with them?"
"I plan to store all the immortal herbs, using Fragrant Odd Velvet as our family's heirloom treasure. We won't tell anyone exactly what we have—not even Grandfather and Great-Uncle."
"I suggest we each pick one herb to use now—you, Grandfather, Great-Uncle, Mom, and myself. The rest we'll save for the future."
"After we're done here, we'll carefully inspect the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well and set it up for secure access. We'll ask Mom to reinforce this entrance and install a hidden door so only the five of us know about it. If possible, it'd be ideal to add some traps as well to prevent intruders."
Yang Zhentian sat in silence for a while before nodding slowly. "You've grown up, son. This approach is wise and for the best. But not sharing this with your grandfather—isn't that a bit…?"
"Dad, Grandfather has a lot of close relationships within the clan. I'm concerned he might share the secret or be tempted to give away the herbs to others."
"You're worried about the other three single-attribute clans?"
"Exactly. Ever since the battle with the Clear Sky Clan, each of the four clans has taken a different stance. Our Yang Clan has an unbreakable grudge against the Clear Sky Clan and Tang Hao, so we'll likely keep our distance from them. But the other clans might not feel the same. The leader of the Agility Clan, Elder Baihe, is Tang Hao and Tang Xiao's uncle by blood; it's unlikely he would cut ties with them. Elder Titan, the leader of the Strength Clan, has always regarded Tang Hao as a benefactor, so he may feel similarly. As for Grandfather's connections on Mom's side… I'm not entirely sure where their loyalties lie."
"If they learned we had such valuable herbs, we could face major trouble. And if the Clear Sky Clan finds out, we wouldn't be able to protect these treasures at all. Besides, there are simply too many people within our clan itself. If word got out, it would spell disaster for us."
Yang Potian didn't add that, although the Yang Clan was a family, internal conflicts could still arise. The immortal herbs were best kept within their direct family. After all, even within the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan, factionalism had grown so rampant that the heir, Yu Xiaogang, was eventually driven out.
After a long pause, Zhentian sighed. "You've thought this through well, son. It's truly the safest choice for our family."
"But what herbs do you plan for me, your mother, and your grandfathers?"
"Dad, you've already reached the level of a Spirit Sage, so I'd recommend the Nine-Grade Dragon Zhi. For Grandfather and Great-Uncle, who are both Spirit Douluos, I'd suggest the Ten-Thousand-Year Ginseng King. That might even help them reach the rank of Titled Douluo."
"For Mom, whose spirit is the Armored Giant Rhinoceros, the earth-type Earth Dragon Golden Gourd would be ideal."
"For the family elders, I suggest using the Nine-Grade Purple Zhi in alchemy. With that, they might quickly advance to the Spirit Douluo level and possibly even reach Titled Douluo."
"What do you think, Dad?"
"You've certainly put those herbal studies to good use, son. That's a well-planned distribution. But what do you plan to do with the rest of these immortal herbs?"
"These are treasures for our family's future. I also want to set some aside for Ping'an and Tianyue."
"And what herb will you take yourself?"
"That's where I'll need your help, Dad. Nine-Leaf Sword Grass is surrounded by sword energy, and I can't retrieve it on my own. Could you help me with that? Eternal Spring Dew is another I want to reserve for later."
Zhentian laughed. "You know how to pick them, don't you? The Nine-Leaf Sword Grass is indeed ideal for our family's needs. But at your age, can you handle it?"
"Don't worry, Dad. My body is strong enough for it."
"You've covered everything well, son. But there's still one issue."
Potian frowned slightly. "What's the problem? I thought the plan was solid."
Zhentian smirked. "You're still just a level 22 Spirit Master. These herbs are too valuable to keep in your possession. I'll look after them for you—and don't worry, they'll all be passed to you in due time."
Potian's face darkened, exasperated. Was his father really trying to confiscate all the herbs he'd harvested?
After some back-and-forth, they finally agreed on a plan to split the herbs. Reluctantly, Potian laid out all the herbs they'd gathered, and they began selecting the ones meant for family use.
After a moment's thought, Potian spoke up. "Dad, I trust Grandfather on Mom's side. Maybe we should save an herb for him?"
Zhentian gave him a curious look. "Oh? And what do you have in mind? Best pick something that won't attract too much attention."
"Dad, I think the Ten-Thousand-Year Earth Zhi would be a good choice. It's top-grade for earth attributes but not quite an immortal herb, just a rare and high-grade medicinal plant. It won't raise any alarms, so it should be safe."
"You sneaky kid. Fine, but it's best if your mom delivers it to him quietly."
"Sounds good to me!"
Then they began selecting herbs in earnest, taking turns.
"I'm younger, so I should go first!" Potian insisted.
Zhentian chuckled, amused. "Fine, son, you go ahead."
Potian eyed the selection carefully and chose Odd Velvet Datura.
Zhentian immediately claimed Lovesick Heartbreak Red.
Potian's next pick was Sky-Reaching Chrysanthemum.
Zhentian countered by taking Eight-Petal Immortal Orchid.
Potian picked Starlight Spirit Pearl.
Zhentian selected Phoenix Crest Sunflower.
…
After much back-and-forth, father and son finally divided all the immortal herbs between them.
As they finished, Zhentian gave his son a mischievous look. "Son, I noticed you didn't touch the Octagonal Mysterious Ice Grass or the Blazing Delicate Apricot. Was that because you're too low-level to handle them?"
Potian held back a sigh. Does he have to flaunt his Spirit Sage level like this? "Dad, I'll claim them later when I reach Spirit Elder rank. I want to use them myself eventually."
"Use them yourself? That's dangerous!"
"There's no progress for a Spirit Master without some risk."
"Fine. We'll leave those two for now. But it'd be safer if you waited until you're a Spirit Ancestor or even a Spirit King before using them."
"I'll keep that in mind, Dad."
And so, with their division complete, father and son turned to the next task—consuming their chosen herbs.
