Chapter 65: Chapter 66: Nanako Becomes a Disciple
As soon as the words were spoken, a flash of white light appeared.
The demon's outstretched arm fell to the ground.
Blood sprayed out, splashing across Nanako's bewildered face.
"Ahhh!"
The demon let out a painful scream.
"Who is it?!"
It looked around but found no one.
However, the sound of footsteps grew louder. The demon turned, and saw Feng Yu, holding the Onikiri sword, his face cold and expressionless.
"You... you're a Demon Slayer!"
The demon recoiled in fear. It hadn't expected to encounter a Demon Slayer in such a remote place.
Earlier, its kin had warned it that the Demon Slayer Corps had lost too many members to continue hunting demons, so it had planned to move on to the nearby Qingyuan Town to hunt humans. But upon passing through here, it found Nanako's mother lying in bed. Despite the viral infection on her body, the demon didn't hesitate; after all, it hadn't eaten a human in a long time and was starving.
It had killed her, feasting on her until her life was drained.
And now, it had encountered Nanako.
"What should I do... This Demon Slayer looks incredibly strong..."
The demon's mind raced, and then its gaze shifted towards Nanako.
Before it could react, the severed arm was instantly picked up by the demon's hand and reattached, before it lunged towards Nanako.
"How foolish!"
"Total Concentration, Water Breathing, Fifth Form: Dragon's Flash!"
A flash of light appeared, and dust flew into the air. The demon's head was severed in an instant, blood spraying out and falling to the ground.
The demon stared in disbelief, its body collapsing onto the earth as it fixed its dying eyes on Nanako.
Its body, now turning to ash, continued to reach for her, but just as its fingers were about to touch her, the demon's body disintegrated completely.
Nanako stared with wide eyes, watching as the demon turned to ashes before her, even the blood that had splattered on her face slowly disappearing.
Confusion and disbelief filled her mind. The events of the day were a shock to her worldview.
Eventually, she fainted.
Feng Yu expressionlessly picked her up, gently wiped the dirt from her face, and combed her messy hair before sitting vigilantly by her side.
The night was hazy. Feng Yu lit a small fire, sitting quietly in front of it. From his storage space, he pulled out a new blanket and covered Nanako with it.
"Mother... mother... don't leave me..."
Clearly, Nanako was having a nightmare, likely reliving the events of that day.
Feng Yu quietly watched the flames, deep in thought, though his expression was unreadable.
"Another step too late... If only I had come sooner... maybe her mother wouldn't have died."
"The battle between humans and demons... is nothing but slaughter and death..."
Feng Yu sighed.
Soon, the night passed.
The sun rose, casting its light upon the earth.
"Are you awake?" Feng Yu asked.
Seeing Nanako remain silent, he smiled faintly, wiping the tears from her face with a damp towel he had somehow procured.
"That monster last night is called a demon. They feed on humans. Ordinary weapons can't harm them, not even cutting off their head."
"The only way to truly kill them is with this Sword of mine, which contains special materials, and with the warmth of the sun."
Feng Yu unsheathed the Onikiri and pointed to the sun above.
Nanako didn't respond. She simply stared blankly at the dilapidated house in front of her.
In her eyes, she seemed to see the fragments of her life here with her mother.
Though life was difficult, it had been warm.
"Mother..."
Thinking of her mother, Nanako began to weep.
"Go see your mother..." Feng Yu said softly.
But Nanako stood up, her face expressionless, and murmured to the ruined house, "I'm sorry..."
She turned and pulled a fire from the still-burning pile, setting the entire house ablaze.
Feng Yu's face stiffened slightly. He hadn't expected Nanako to do such a thing.
He quietly stood by, watching her, neither stopping her nor saying anything.
The flames roared upwards, sending black smoke into the sky.
It seemed as though they were bidding their final farewell.
"Mother... I will take care of myself..."
Tears streamed down Nanako's face, her sorrow beyond words. She fell to her knees and bowed three times.
Feng Yu didn't know how to comfort her, so he gently patted her back as she wept.
"Actually... I knew. I knew that mother wouldn't survive much longer. I knew that the medicine from the clinic wouldn't help her..."
"I just... I just wanted to stay with her until the end..."
"Mother named me Nanako because she saw my green eyes, like tender sprouts growing from the soil..."
"She wanted me to be brave, to be strong..."
Nanako sobbed uncontrollably in Feng Yu's arms, her tears soaking his clothes.
She cried for a long time, and Feng Yu remained silent, letting her grieve.
The flames continued to burn, casting a fiery glow on Feng Yu's face.
"Do you have any plans for the future?" Feng Yu asked.
"I... I don't know..." Nanako replied faintly.
She seemed to have never considered a life without her mother, without anyone. She had been prepared to leave this world with her mother, but now, when asked by Feng Yu what her plans were, she felt a profound sense of confusion.
"If you really don't know what to do... then come with me," Feng Yu said gently.
Upon hearing this, Nanako slowly lifted her head and gazed at Feng Yu's handsome face.
"Can you teach me to become as strong as you?" she asked hesitantly.
"Mm, I can, but it will be tough," Feng Yu replied calmly, looking at the tear-streaked face before him.
"I want to avenge my mother. I will kill them all!" Nanako said through gritted teeth.
Feng Yu didn't respond immediately. He simply stared at her, sighed, and then said, "From now on, you'll be my disciple."
"You... you're not lying to me, are you?"
"Where you go, I will go."
"Mm, I won't lie to you."
Behind them, the flames continued to burn brightly, symbolizing the moment they forged their bond as master and disciple.
Leaving behind her old life, Feng Yu led Nanako to a nearby inn, where he had her bathe in a hot spring and then bought new, clean clothes for her.
When Nanako put on the new clothes, she burst into tears. This was the first time she'd ever worn something so nice and clean.
"Master Feng Yu... thank you..." she said, throwing herself into his arms.
"Master Feng Yu, your scent is so pleasant..."
